Hey all, Hoping somebody can help me, really can't seem to get this XML to apply Start menu + Taskbar settings. The GPO itself is applying fine, just doesn't seem to be adjusting anything. Attached image of xml code

This is a weird one and seems to only affect machines deployed with SCCM as our 32 Bit machines don't do it Anyway in the Windows 7 taskbar blank ghost icons seem to be present. They don't do anything when clicked and can vary from one to lots (an extreme example is attached!). Annoyingly this also prevents some of the other icons from being 'clickable' for some reason including quite an important one - volume control I've also noticed the 'Network' icon should be present but isn't so the mystery deepens! Has anyone come across this before?

As the title says; Is there a way to move the taskbar (which is locked via GPO) with keyboard shortcuts? I have a teacher who has moved her taskbar to the top of the screen I can't not move it back on her account for love or money! I've tried using ALT+SPACE while the taskbar is selected but the options are all greyed out... Much appreciated!

This used to work under Windows 10 and according to the Microsoft documentation the process is supposed to be the same for Windows 11 (just it doesn't support changing the Start Menu any more, only the Taskbar layout) but I don't seem to be able to get the taskbar apps layout working for our staff users. Here's what I've got: xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/LayoutModification" xmlns:defaultlayout="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/FullDefaultLayout" xmlns:start="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/StartLayout" xmlns:taskbar="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/TaskbarLayout" Version="1"> No matter whether I apply this through GPO or Intune though, it doesn't seem to be having any effect. What am I doing wrong? Have Microsoft changed how taskbar management works again and just not told anybody / not updated their documentation?

[1809, ou] Taskbar Pinned Applications not appearing - StartLayout
J_Worth posted a topic in Windows 10
Hello everyone, I have been getting our end user configuration all sorted for Windows 10 and have the Start Menu layout, mandatory profile (I know!) and default associations all working absolutely fine. However, I cannot for the life of me get the Taskbar Pinned shortcuts to appear - they are listed in the StartLayout.xml file as appropriate so I'm not sure what's going on. Also, how can I get the OneDrive sync client installing for a user when they login using a mandatory profile? Is there any way? Any help with these couple of issues would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.- 3 replies

I'm not sure if a windows 10 policy is causing a conflict with this, but on our 4 windows 11 machines, non admin accounts can't left click icons on the taskbar (wireless, sound etc) nothing appears when they click. But if you log in with an administrator account, it works fine. Anyone else encountered this? thanks!

It seems like Microsoft still hasn't made any real improvements to the customizations for the start menu and taskbar through GPO. In our case, we are currently configuring our first customer with 2012 terminal servers. And like most sysadmins, we do not want the regular user on the terminal server to be able to even see the icons for powershell, server manager or administrative tools on their start menu or taskbar. Not that they are able to run those programs, but knowing from experience, "dumb" users will eventually click on anything they see is available on their menus. And when those programs generates the "access denied" error message, our phones are glowing in the matter of minutes. So! With the help of some heavy googlin' and lots of error and trial, i finally got what i wanted to work. So here is a guide which will provide you with the right GPO settings to clear the start menu of server manager, task manager and powershell. It will also clear the taskbar for server manager and powershell, but leave the file explorer and still let the users pin the programs they want to the taskbar. 1. User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar 2. Computer Configuration\Preferences\Windows Settings\Files 3. User Configuration\Preferences\Windows Settings\Files 4. User Configuration\Preferences\Windows Settings\Registry - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband (set to delete and apply once and do not reapply) - Create the following new registry items: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband] "FavoritesResolve"=hex:98,02,00,00,4c,00,00,00,01,14,02,00,00,00,00,00,c0,00,00,00,00,00,00,46,83,00,80,00,20,00,00,00,4e,95,54,7a,4b,bf,cd,01,4e,95,54,7a,4b,bf,cd,01,36,42,94,a5,a4,6a,cd,01,97,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,3e,01,14,00,1f,80,c8,27,34,1f,10,5c,10,42,aa,03,2e,e4,52,87,d6,68,52,00,31,00,00,00,00,00,6a,41,52,6f,11,00,54,61,73,6b,42,61,72,00,3c,00,08,00,04,00,ef,be,6a,41,52,6f,6a,41,52,6f,2a,00,00,00,46,3d,01,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,54,00,61,00,73,00,6b,00,42,00,61,00,72,00,00,00,16,00,d6,00,32,00,97,01,00,00,f9,40,17,a4,20,00,46,49,4c,45,45,58,7e,31,2e,4c,4e,4b,00,00,78,00,08,00,04,00,ef,be,6a,41,52,6f,6a,41,52,6f,2a,00,00,00,4a,3d,01,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,4e,00,00,00,00,00,46,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,20,00,45,00,78,00,70,00,6c,00,6f,00,72,00,65,00,72,00,2e,00,6c,00,6e,00,6b,00,00,00,40,00,73,00,68,00,65,00,6c,00,6c,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,2c,00,2d,00,32,00,32,00,30,00,36,00,37,00,00,00,1c,00,42,02,00,4d,00,69,00,63,00,72,00,6f,00,73,00,6f,00,66,00,74,00,2e,00,57,00,69,00,6e,00,64,00,6f,00,77,00,73,00,2e,00,45,00,78,00,70,00,6c,00,6f,00,72,00,65,00,72,00,00,00,1c,00,00,00,a8,00,00,00,1c,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,1c,00,00,00,2d,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,a7,00,00,00,11,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,02,a6,df,3a,10,00,00,00,00,43,3a,5c,55,73,65,72,73,5c,61,64,6d,69,6e,69,73,74,72,61,74,6f,72,2e,53,4d,42,5c,41,70,70,44,61,74,61,5c,52,6f,61,6d,69,6e,67,5c,4d,69,63,72,6f,73,6f,66,74,5c,49,6e,74,65,72,6e,65,74,20,45,78,70,6c,6f,72,65,72,5c,51,75,69,63,6b,20,4c,61,75,6e,63,68,5c,55,73,65,72,20,50,69,6e,6e,65,64,5c,54,61,73,6b,42,61,72,5c,46,69,6c,65,20,45,78,70,6c,6f,72,65,72,2e,6c,6e,6b,00,00,60,00,00,00,03,00,00,a0,58,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,69,6e,76,65,6e,74,75,6d,30,32,00,00,00,00,00,00,a6,58,be,d3,b6,46,ed,42,8f,a3,d3,93,8e,1d,5d,8c,95,9e,41,73,c0,2a,e2,11,93,f3,00,50,56,90,4c,60,a6,58,be,d3,b6,46,ed,42,8f,a3,d3,93,8e,1d,5d,8c,95,9e,41,73,c0,2a,e2,11,93,f3,00,50,56,90,4c,60,00,00,00,00 "Favorites"=hex:00,3e,01,00,00,14,00,1f,80,c8,27,34,1f,10,5c,10,42,aa,03,2e,e4,52,87,d6,68,52,00,31,00,00,00,00,00,6a,41,52,6f,11,00,54,61,73,6b,42,61,72,00,3c,00,08,00,04,00,ef,be,6a,41,52,6f,6a,41,52,6f,2a,00,00,00,46,3d,01,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,54,00,61,00,73,00,6b,00,42,00,61,00,72,00,00,00,16,00,d6,00,32,00,97,01,00,00,f9,40,17,a4,20,00,46,49,4c,45,45,58,7e,31,2e,4c,4e,4b,00,00,78,00,08,00,04,00,ef,be,6a,41,52,6f,6a,41,52,6f,2a,00,00,00,4a,3d,01,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,4e,00,00,00,00,00,46,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,20,00,45,00,78,00,70,00,6c,00,6f,00,72,00,65,00,72,00,2e,00,6c,00,6e,00,6b,00,00,00,40,00,73,00,68,00,65,00,6c,00,6c,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,2c,00,2d,00,32,00,32,00,30,00,36,00,37,00,00,00,1c,00,42,00,00,00,1d,00,ef,be,02,00,4d,00,69,00,63,00,72,00,6f,00,73,00,6f,00,66,00,74,00,2e,00,57,00,69,00,6e,00,64,00,6f,00,77,00,73,00,2e,00,45,00,78,00,70,00,6c,00,6f,00,72,00,65,00,72,00,00,00,1c,00,00,00,ff "FavoritesChanges"=dword:0000000a "FavoritesVersion"=dword:00000002 "FavoritesRemovedChanges"=dword:00000002 Set all these registry items to ble "apply once and do not reapply" 5. One important thing to remember Depending on what language you have configured for the users you also have to take that into consideration when creating the policies for deleting the shortcuts. In my case, i also had to add the Norwegian names for Task Manager and Administrative Tools for example. Hope this was helpfull!

Hello, Let's say I have 2 printers under Windows 7 x64. I have 2 scripts to set each of the 2 printers as default and I pinned shortcuts to those 2 scripts to the taskbar. They work fast. I've been meaning to add some dynamic icons for these shortcuts so that when I set a printer as default, its shortcut gets a colored icon and the other printer's shortcut gets b/w icon. Not many viable options to do this, but I found some code here on the forum and I adapted it to my situation. I made a .dll file with the 4 icons I need to use, because it seems that the code won't work with .ico. I will post the code below, but first let me tell you which my problems are: - the icon change in the folder where I have all files (the 2 .vbs, the 2 .lnk, icons.dll) happens in 15-20 seconds, which is a bit slow given the fact that the default printer change takes place in 1 second - this happens even if I refresh the folder (F5) repeatedly - the icon change doesn't happen at all for the icons in taskbar (I made shortcuts correctly, with target: C:\Windows\System32\wscript.exe "E:\Printers\Bro.lnk") It might be the code I use that is wrong and maybe you guys can help me make it better. Here it is: Set WshNetwork = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Network") PrinterPath = "Brother DCP-T300" WshNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter PrinterPath Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application") Set objFolder = objShell.NameSpace("E:\Printers") Set objFolderItem = objFolder.ParseName("Bro.lnk") Set objShortcut = objFolderItem.GetLink objShortcut.SetIconLocation "E:\Printers\icons.dll" ,0 objShortcut.Save Set objFolderItem = objFolder.ParseName("Bul.lnk") Set objShortcut = objFolderItem.GetLink objShortcut.SetIconLocation "E:\Printers\icons.dll" ,3 objShortcut.Save WScript.Quit 1 Please help me make this faster, or if not possible please at least tell me why. About the taskbar thing, I can live without it since it works for desktop shortcuts. Please don't say I'm too picky and that it takes 3 seconds to switch between printers via CPanel - I know. I might as well be using 5 printers on a tight schedule and need to switch between them pretty fast without having always to right click and set as default printer. Thank you in advance.

Afternoon all. In my set of schools, the little darlings manage to somehow get the start/task bar to the top of the screen, even though all settings are locked out and you cannot drag/drop, right click move etc. There must be a key combo that does this. Its happened in a load of different schools too. I know we can reset it by deleting and recreating the profile, but I just want to know the key combo, if anyone knows it? Cheers

I've got a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine that the user has managed to move the task bar from the bottom to the top. Unfortunately, the user can't move back due to it being restricted by GPO. I've tried running the update KB 2877985, but had no success. Any Ideas on how to get it back to the bottom?

Hi, I'm having a problem that appears to be very common with Windows 10 build 1511 deployed in a domain environment. Basically the search feature on the task bar doesn't work when logged on as a domain user but is fine as the local administrator. I've been investigating this for some time now and is obvious that it's a permissions issue but trying to narrow this down to what on where is not quite so straight forward. It would seem that the 'ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES' user is the key here but that's as far as I've got. I've removed all GPOs from this computer for testing purposes and to rule them out as a cause as apparently file/registry permissions in these can throw things out. I've also run the very common PS code below which has helped others by the looks of it but made no difference here. Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like “*SystemApps*”} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”} This is a fresh installation so really shouldn't need a re-register at this stage. Regardless I ran it for good measure. Anyone else had this problem and managed to work around it?
