I am a small team of people tasked with researching and documenting disaster recovery standards for our other technicians. I have a school which are a good candidate to be a guinea pig for this. They currently have one DC which is running 2008R2 to approximately 200 x64 Windows 7 clients. They have 2 domain joined servers, both running 2008R2, which run Sophos Enterprise Console & WSUS and another which used to be their local PCE server. They are now centrally hosted for PCE so I thought about promoting that server to a secondary DC as part of my team's research. I am wondering if I need to remove the PCE server from the domain before promoting it or can I DCPROMO it straight after installing the AD role?

Hi all, We've recently started to use WSUS to its full extent and are assigning updates to all our Windows Client PCs/Servers from it. Updates go through a testing program (usually inside VMs) before deployment to the clients/servers to make sure we have no problems. All the XP/7 Desktops/Notebooks are working great however our Windows 2008 DCs (at least this only appears to be affecting DCs) don't install updates on the programed schedule. Looking in the event log of a server (non DC (also R2 not R1)) that is installing updates correctlyI see the message- Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. This computer is currently scheduled to install these updates on ‎11 ‎November ‎2010 at 03:00: - Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - November 2010 (KB890830) Looking in the event log of a DC that is not installing updates automatically I see the message- Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. To install the updates, an administrator should log on to this computer and Windows will prompt with further instructions: - Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - November 2010 (KB890830) Both servers are a member of the same OU with the same GPO applied to them to install all updates on every Friday at 3AM, the only thing that I can figure out that is different is those that aren’t installing are 2008 R1 with AD installed and those that are are running R2 and don’t have AD installed. Any clues on what to do next would be greatly received

Hi All, I need some advice on what to do with a Windows Server Standard FE server as I don't have experience of it. The server is the domain controller, exchange 2007 server and it has file shares on it as well. Not only this but it has been virtualised on ESXi 4.0 due to the physical server giving up a few years ago. This was all done well before my time at the company. I just need some advice on how to sort this out. Can i create another DC and then demote this one? I think i read somewhere that it won't allow another DC or was this SBS server?? Can I leave exchange 2007 running on the server or now that it is virtualised, does it mean the Windows server license is now invalid? I'm assuming migrating the file shares is just like 2008 standard? I'm trying to establish a plan to tell my boss as he feels this server needs addressing. I hope someone out there can help me. Regards Dave
