So, Backup Exec is telling you you've ran out of space. So you've adjusted retention times, erased a library or 2, or added some more space etc... Yet it still thinks it is out of space. The solution? Simple. Under 'Devices' right click on the Backup To Disk folder which has the low space warning on it, choose Pause. Repeat, and unpause. Done.

Hello all, This is an Informational Thread that may help anyone else who encounters the same Issue I did. The setup was backup to Disk, backing up to a remote Windows 2008 R2 box. Backups would fail after 4GB had been copied (Size of one .bkf file) The job would fail with the following status Final error: 0xe00084f4 - An unknown error has occurred. Final error category: System Errors For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-34036 and the following error Storage device "Remote Backup Location" reported an error on a request to write data to media. Error reported: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. V-79-57344-34036 - An unknown error has occurred. This turned out to be a mismatch between the write cache status in Backup exec and on the RAID card of the Backup location Backup Exec was set to auto, and was assuming write cache was enabled. The Backup location had write cache disabled. Enabling Write cache on the remote Backup location fixed the issue. Hope this is helpful for anyone else who encounters the same error (MOD note - wasn't certain if this was the correct forum for Backup software posts - please feel free to move if required)

Hi, I am trying to streamline our backups and as I have inherited the current system, wondered what is good/best practice for what data is backed up. In this instance we still have Symantec Backup Exec, taking a weekly digital backup of all the VMs and then a separate server backup of the 1st & 2nd server, along with member servers (we are an RM CC4 school) but also includes a backup of the backup server, VCenter and wireless servers. These server backups are then duplicated to Tape weekly. There is also a daily incremental backup of the servers. As the actual VM's are being digitally backed up, do we really need to be backing up a whole server (including Window, program data, Program files etc etc.) such as the 1st or member servers, or just the user data folders? We are hopefully going to be migrating to a Vanilla network very soon, and we are looking to potentially backup to the cloud, either via Redstore or a MS Azure solution as the tapes and loader are very old and starting to fail with greater regularity - so anything to get our data backup down is a priority. We are also going to be getting students (but mostly staff) to purge old documents, or upload them to their Google Drive areas as part of this also. Just wondering what your thoughts are, and best practice/examples you may have. Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone. This is a really big long shot. I am in contact with Symantec support regarding an odd issue which has suddenly started with one of our backup jobs. I was wondering if anyone might have seen this before or have any ideas what on earth is going on. We use Backup Exec 2012 with SP4. There are 11 total jobs in our system. Each runs a full weekly backup followed by daily incremental. All servers are virtual, but we are backing up the contents of the virtual servers and not the virtual hard disk files. All jobs work correctly except one which when running causes the BEngine.exe to memory leak and so drag the media server to a standstill. Data transfer rates drop but the job will eventually end. This only happens for this one server on incremental runs, the full backup works fine. What makes things even stranger is that the problem server is our staff file server. In terms of setup it is exactly the same as the pupil file server (same Windows Updates and general settings etc). Symantec support seem to acknowledge the memory leak issue in many articles but their advice so far has been to restart the remote agent service on the affected file server before and after the job run. But, there is no memory issue on the file server itself. Whilst the run is taking place, the file server does not seem to change. The server was not doing this last week. We have run the same backup procedure for over a year without any issues. Nothing was changed within our setups last week. Like I said, this is a long shot, but does anyone have any ideas what could be going on here? Thanks for your time.

Hi; I have recently taken over a network and one urgent problem I need to solve is getting the Tandberg Storage Library T24 working. It has Tandberg Drivers installed but only showing up as a Tape device rather than a Medium Changer in Device Manager on W23K Enterprise R2 (installed as a IBM Ultrium HH4 Tape Drive at the moment.) Back Exec 12.5 works but only sees it as a Tape Drive rather than a Robotic library. Has anyone had experience using this tape drive? Much appricated !

Hi All, I've just restore my Exchange Server 2007 image which also serving DC+GC and all 5x FSMO role into a server with different hardware using Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 With the "Restore Anyware" the server was boot up as if it were just clean installed (no drivers and such), so I'm worried about the integrity of this Windows Server 2003 after the restore. at the moment I haven't tried to connect the restored server into the network yet as the backup was taken using the last night full backup (I know the mail client would be conflicting if this server gets into network). the server was just restarted and now in the Exchange Server Console it complaints cannot find domain.com and also cannot find hub transport server ? how could this happens ? the server it self should know that it contains everything (HT-CAS-MBx role) and also DC + GC and 2nd DNS. my next step is to connect a laptop directly into it and see if it can authenticate and do direct cable connection (patch) may i know what sort of test that i should do to make sure that Exchange Server service and AD components working fine ?

I want to start taking a tape backup off site once a term but want to ensure that it is encrypted so if it did go missing no one could get to the data (Or it would be hard to get the data). I have a Disk to Disk to Tape Setup using Backup Exec 11d. I have had a look in the settings but cant find where I can create an encrypted backup. Firstly can I create an encrypted back with backup exec? Secondly if I can, how do I do it? Thanks

Hi We're trying to back up our servers to a LaCie 6TB NAS device with Backup Exec 12.5. Initially we ran a single huge backup and it took well over 30 hours to run, so decided to try multiple smaller backups. Trouble is, none of the backups will run - they sit as "queued" and won't budge until I reboot the server running Backup Exec. I've deleted and re-created the job, deleted and re-added the NAS device to Backup Exec, and am now stumped. Anyone else found a solution to this? The ones about pausing and unpausing the server (found on Google) and disabling and re-enabling the device (similarly found on Google) have no effect whatsoever. Any suggestions greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. Stephen

I am having issues with the WSUS server and thinking of rebuilding or reinstalling WSUS. Debating best home for WSUS server. WSUS is currently on a VM running as an App server with 8GB. No problems with server or utilization. The only problem is if I completely re-install WSUS services and experiment with other SUS products I can't reboot the server during the week because too many people are using it. There's also a small share volume on it as well which contains files people are always using. I have a Dell PowerEdge R530 with 32GB of RAM that runs the Backup Exec. Incrementals at night copied to a HDD, Full back up to HDD and tape on weekends. Seems like a powerful box that's only used a few hours a week for a very specific purpose. Seems like a good place to install SUS. The only drawback I see is that is SUS is pulling updates in middle of the night would have to be scheduled after the backup, but that doesn't seem like an issue, incrementals are only taking about 30 minutes each night during the week. Seems like a lot of server for one purpose. Also another advantage is I can reboot this server without interfering with other people working, Anyone see any issues with WSUS and Backup Exec on same box? Am I missing anything here in my thinking???

Hi all, I have one Server 2003 domain controller with around 200 PCs. I have Symantec Backup Exec backup running. Today I removed a piece of software from the server called Classlink which monitors a particular OU in Active Directory. I then noticed it had deleted that particular OU from Active Directory! I have a System State of Active Directory from Sunday night. Can you advise of any problems I may encounter restoring? Can I just restore the OU from within Windows?

Hey guys and girls, The guys and myself are have major issues over the length of time Backup Exec is backing up the Shadow Copy Components. The size of the overall backup is roughly 500GB and is backed up by going over the network to our dedicated backup Server which then saves the data on an external hard drive connected via USB 2.0. Understandably, we expect it to be a little slow but at the moment the length of time it is taking is.. >110 Hours. Yeh.. The drive has been checked of course for any failures and has been fine. Generally all our other backups have been OK with no failures and Symantec Backup Exec is generally working in the way it should. Our Specs for the backup server: Microsoft Server 2008 R2 Pentium D 3.00Ghz 2.99hz 3GB RAM External Seagate 1TB Hard Drive with USB 2.0 connection Gigabit Infrastructure throughout Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 Obviously this is just stupid, We expect the time to be long but never this long, we want it done in at most a day! Never seen a backup to extend this long before. Our current theories are that Shadow Copy Components might have corrupt data within it or the fact that it technically is just hundreds (probably thousands) of individual files. It's not like backing up a database, its individual ones. If anyone can help or give advice it would be much appreciated. We will be updating Symantec soonish, giving us a fresh start on the backup procedure, but there is no guarantee that this would solve the issue. Thanks!

Hi, I have problem while trying to recall offline files, after they restored with Backup Exec. Does anyone have similar problem, help?!!!! Thanks!

Hello we have recently installed backup exec 2010 from backup exec 12.5 as it blue screened and killed our server we have had an issue with our dfsr system this has resulted in students work going missing. now here is our problem: we have rebuild the server and got our media sets running we can also preform a backup, restore, and anything else which comes with it, the major head ache is that we need to recover the data that was lost from when we were using 12.5. the tapes just do not want to do anything we caan sort of get a 50/50 on if it will catolouge but we when we try to recover data after that it says please inster tape x (the one we have just catologed) any help would be brilliant Thanks Josh bowl:

Hello All, How does one do the backup of their VMWare virtual infrastructure ? I'm wondering if there is a backup best practice and deployment document that can describe which architecture to select (eg. NBD or SAN or D2D or D2T, etc..). Thanks,

Hi All, I'm now at the stage of creating a backup strategy for my current vSphere 4 (2x ESXi + 1x vCenter Server + 1 iSCSI SAN), but at the moment the purple arrow (which is the NBD mode backup to the backup server is running very2 slow around 243 MB/minutes according to the Backup Exec result log. (To backup 800 GB LUN it takes 55 hours.) for the VM which has got RDM partition attach into it, i can just make it a virtual mode so that the VCB v1.5 can do the snapshot and quiesce the EXT3 Filesystem. The reason in using the NBD mode to transfer the VM backup is that to make the backup process to run faster without encryption but it turns out to be slower that what i thought, if anyone got a better solution in using SAN mode or even HotAdd mode please share your comments and suggestion here. Note: The network between iSCSI SAN andthe 2x ESXi servers are different subnet (see the color coding) Blue cylinder indicates NTFS partition while the Black cylinder indicates the VMFS any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

We've just replaced our aging Quantum LTO1 Valueloader with a bit more capacious Quantum LTO3 Superloader 3 - but performance under Backup Exec 12 on a Windows 2008 server seems, well, pants- to put not too fine a point on it! With the old valueloader on the same server, we were seeing data transfer rates over 500Mb/min - but with the new Superloader 3, we're getting only 5Mb/min! It starts off around the 600Mb/min mark, then plummets steadily and quickly in the first few minutes of the job until it bottoms out around 5Mb/min. A recent 800Mb test job (backing up the program files folder from the media server itself, to rule out any agent issues) took nearly 3 hours to complete! Obviously this isn't great when trying to back up nearly a terabyte of data overnight - it just isn't going to happen. I've checked and confirmed SCSI connections - it's on an Adaptec 29160LP adaptor: not the newest HBA, but it worked fine with the other one. Changed cables, changed terminators. Still the same. We've even gone to the extremes of completely reinstalling the server to ensure any old drivers from the original Valueloader have been well and truly removed from the environment. No change. We're using the Quantum driver for the autoloader mechanism, and the Symantec driver for the tape drive. Autoloader operations complete fine and in a timely manner suggesting the quantum driver is OK. We've updated the Symantec drivers using a hotfix from their website, and applied SP3 for Backup Exec 12, still no change. We're using brand new Sony LTO3 media throughout. Given Backup Exec will use a network folder as a target for backup, and record throuput in the region of 300Mb / min when it does so, we're comfortable that it's not an agent issue pulling files from machines, or that the software itself is rubbish. It seems confined to this autoloader - which suggests SCSI, driver, or physical device issue. However we've been on to Quantum, who have inspected the device logs and had us run some test software against the device only to find no fault. Under the test software, it is returning the expected data transfer rates and they're insisting the device is working fine - it must be something else. Any suggestions? I think there can only be a config problem left - but I'm beating my head against a brick wall over what it could be as I've spent so long staring at it without success! Seeing woods for trees, and all that. I can see that I'm going to have to buy in another SCSI HBA just so I can do some swap-out testing, or even upgrade to Backup Exec 12.5 to rule out 12, but I'd rather not spend precious wodges of my budgets if I can avoid it! Thanks in advance! Jim
