Would any school could recommend a support consultancy, to give telephone and remote support, and sometimes on site support, for a secondary school with a proper Windows vanilla system. I am looking somewhere not too far from Surrey. Many thanks.

A secondary academy in north London requires an experienced VMware specialist to provide a few days consultancy relating to a schools upgrade from free VMware set up to enterprise versions You will be expected to advise on which software version to go for with their set up, assist with major server porting including AD and SCCM, then advise internal staff in porting the remaining servers and provide some health check work afterwards to make sure everything is running correctly Someone with certificates to back up the experience would be preferred including VCA, VCP etc This work can be done inside or outside of term time, although the sooner the better. Someone network managing a secondary school who has done this before would be sufficient. There is good technical strength in-house so anyone interested will really be providing a high level of VMWare knowledge

I have been in charge of IT support at my current workplace for four year. I am leaving at the end of November and unfortunately the school have not been very effective in finding my replacement, or even sending out Job Descriptions and application packs. Therefore it is looking highly unlikely that the new person will start before I leave, which means no chance for a handover. The principal has approached me and asked if I would be willing to do evening handovers once I have left and once the new person starts. Obviously at a fee. I have never done consultancy work before so I am not sure what would be a good fee to set, bearing in mind that if I don’t do it, their only choice would be to call in an external company who would charge an excessive amount of money and would most likely need to get to grips with the system first, before doing a handover to a new person. From looking around, it seems that most people would charge about three times their hourly rate of what they get paid as an employee, which would work out at about £54 an hour for me. Does this seem a bit much? Any advice appreciated Léonie

I believe the cuts to funding as meant schools will have to buy back services / consultancy from LFGL. If I'm honest, I don't think I have ever contacted the LGFL and will be using their services. This year, even the broadband has been moved to Virgin. I find the whole experience, particularly their website, a poor one. I came across an interesting link to Intel who are doing some work in the education space, they are not selling any solutions but providing advise and guidance. If I had to choose between Intel and LFGL for advise, I know who I'd choose. Google 'Intel Transforming Education' if you want to know more (Sorry I can't share links here).

Our current 3rd line support company which we have worked with for over 10 years is in the process of winding down their operations as a number of the team are nearing retirement. Therefore, I was wondering whether the community could recommend some companies based upon their experience. The sort of 3rd line support we require covers the following areas: Network troubleshooting and configuration - mainly surrounding moves adds and changes to the network Exchange 2003/ 2010 configuration and troubleshooting support Project based consultancy as required regarding the above and network security, with opportunities for project work in other areas subject to experience. Our methodology when working with 3rd parties is that of partnership, where we like to be as "hands on" as possible which normally means that telephone support/ remote access is all that is needed, with an allowance for two days p.a. onsite. We are located in West London. Many thanks
