Hey Peeps, I've got an issue with FOG's Multicasting that I can't figure out, wondering if anyone can help. I get the error below whenever I try to use the multicasting. "Can't read the following volume file: ... /stdin.001" I know the network is fine with multicasting, and FOG creates and deploys single images spot on. Its just I get this error no matter what image I try to multicast, how many machines etc. I did a bit of googling and didn't come up with much. Though a thread on Clonezilla (which i know nothing about) suggested it was something to do with the disk configuration. Im not sure how relevant that info is, considering its a completely different cloning solution. Any help would be appreciated. Sean Ps. Oh, Ive got Fog 0.28 running on Ubuntu Server 9.10 - (Its a VM, though that should make much difference I guess)

Hello there, Long time lurker. First time post. I'm trying to install FOG, and I'm hitting a problem that has been asked on the FOG forums, but never received an answer. Thought I would post here in the hope someone else has some ideas. Basically, we've installed FOG (vers 0.27) via the VM image supplied from their site. This runs on Ubuntu, but because it's an image file, I don't do any Ubuntu install. I've configured FOG exactly as suggested in the install notes. I have not selected it to be a DHCP server as there is one on our network elsewhere. Everything appears to install correctly, but we cannot access the FOG server through the web interface. Trying to do this, simply results in a standard Internet Explorer "cannot display the webpage" error. I can definitely ping the IP address of the new webserver, both from the machine with the VMWare server on, and another machine on the network. I'm at a loss as to what else could be wrong. I've tried reinstalling from scratch, tried different IP addresses, nothing works. Any ideas?! Martin

I've just started using Fog and i'm having a problem after I image the machines. After the computer images, Sysprep starts and I rename the PC and join it under our domain. When finished the computer goes through chkdsk and restarts. When it comes back up the computer has been renamed back to when it was registered with Fog and I cannot connect to the domain, AD is showing the new and old name. I have stopped the Fog services and deleted the computer/host in fog. I can rename the PC and get it back on the domain, but fog re-registers it. At this point everything works, but if i have to rename the computer in the future i'll have to redo these steps. My question is: is there a way to either stop fog from changing the computers name and dis-joining it form the domain or stop fog all together after the ghosting is complete? My setup: Ubuntu 8.10 Fog 0.28 All machines are HP using XP Thanks

We have been successfully running a FOG server under Fedora 10, and finding it most useful to be able to multicast an image to a suite of PC's Recently, FOG has stopped multi-casting, although it will still work fine in uni-cast mode. We have made no changes to our netowrk infrastructure as far as I can see. Has anyone any sggestions as to why this has occured Cheers Iain

Hello all, The last few weeks I've tinkering with a FOG server and it's gone well on the machines I've tested with. I've now got a set of 16 Samsung NC20's which I'd love to image with FOG but it's not working. With the FOG server set to upload an image, I PXE boot one and get as far as; Loading fog/kernel/bzImage................. Loading fog/images/init.gz................... via_rng: cannot enable VIA C3 RNG, aborting via_rng: RNG registering failed (-19) sky2 0000:02:00.0: cannot assign irq 0 My linux knowledge is quite basic, any support would be appreicated.

I have a set of 20 Win7 netbooks at my school that we're trying to prepare for student checkout. Rather than manually "fix" the software on 20 machines (with the possibility of having to do it again at a later time if students mess around with them), I'm trying to set up an imaging system I can use independently of my district's infrastructure. I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 along side my district's Win XP install on a laptop. I'd like to install FOG server on that Ubuntu machine, and connect it to am 8-port hub with the netbooks to capture and then deploy the image. It doesn't seem to want to take when the laptop is connected in any way to the network, but I can't figure out how to set up the network parameters of the laptop when it's disconnected from our network. I've tried following the guide on the FOG project website about installing FOG on an isolated network, but it doesn't want to find the management page. I'm not a Linux guy, but am a pretty quick study. I figure there's some detailed setup on the back end that I'm missing - I just need some help figuring out what it is. Any help would be appreciated, or let me know if there's more information I need to post here. Thanks, JW

Not really a big problem, just an annoyance but FOG can't seem to ever restart my systems. For example, if I run a full inventory and host registration, it gets through the whole process and then sits at "Restarting System" until I manually go and restart it. Anyone had a similar experience/have some wisdom to impart?

Hi guys. Setup a FOG server a while ago but have some ancient RM machines which I want to use FOG on as well I understand that I need to use something like GPXE/Etherboot as these machines don't support PXE but I am having a nightmare trying to get it to work and the GPXE documentation is written for someone who knows Linux better than me I've downloaded the pre-build floppy .dsk Copied it to the desktop formatted my floppy with Windows (didn't know how to do it with Linux until 5 mins ago) Figured out where in /dev the floopy lives (/dev/sdb) cd Desktop sudo dd if=gpxe.dsk of=/dev/sdb Says it's successful so eject the disk and plug it in to a machine and all I get is "Loading ROM image...................." and then it just sits there Also tried formatting it in Linux (Ubuntu 9.10) as FAT and as EXT3. FAT made no difference, EXT3 crashed needing another re-format! When dd'ing, the result I get is: 521+0 records in 521+0 records out 266752 bytes (267 kB) copied 29.2208 s, 9.1 kB/s Managed to get the CD version working on my test machine so not a problem with the machine but I don't want to have to carry a USB CD drive around with me when I can carry a plain old USB Floppy drive or Netac USB Key with floppy emulation! Any ideas? Thank you!

Hi there, I am having some strange happenings with Windows 7 Pro and hoping someone can help me out. I have installed 2 versions of Windows 7 Pro on to a machine and then set up each side accordingly with all the software and drivers required for each, the idea behind the dual boot is one side is to be used at home and one side is to be used on site to prevent issues with home internet connections and home printers. Once I had finished setting up each side I ran sysprep with the generalize option so that the machine in question could be imaged and then copied on to other laptops of the same specification, we do our imaging with Fog. The problem is after I have run the sysprep only one of the operating systems will load, both are available on the boot loader but whichever one you select it always loads the same system. For example when I choose home it will load the home system but then when I choose work it will still load the home system. Really confusing, hoping someone can help me out or I will be prevented from having a dual boot setup.

How do I launch fog's image capture with ntfsresize --bad-sectors swtich. I've gone into the debug mode and managed to resize it manually but I can start of the image capture without it throwing a fit.

Running Fog .29 on Ubuntu 10.3 Client machines are XP Pro SP3 When we did the full host registration process with our client machines, we thought it would be a good time to change our ancient naming convention that was antiquated and irrelevant to something that made more since and was simpler. Thought it was a good idea but now we are struggling with the hostname changer process. Our client machines are already joined to the domain under "pc-oldname" and if we turn on the hostname changer to a group of them, the fog rename wizard does it's thing and renames them but it then breaks its domain membership. I do a search in AD for the "pc-newname" and its not there but the old object name is still there. On the client machine, it shows it with the "pc-newname" and still has our domain as an option to log into, but when attempted, it fails. The hostname changer works great when it runs after a reimage, but we have not imaged 100's of the pc's this fall yet and would like FOG to rename them. Any ideas on what we might do to fix this? Thanks.

Hi guys I updated our FOG server from 0.28 to 0.29 and am loving some of the new features. My only issue currently is how do I upgrade the clients with the 0.28 FOG clients to the 0.29 FOG client? I've noticed that using the FOG 0.28 client does most things but it breaks the green FOG service that turns off the computers at a set time. We are running a server 2003/XP professional network. Thanks guys

Good afternoon all, This is my first post and i would greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can offer. I am currently trying to upload an image to my FOG server (0.29). The image in question is a Sysprepped Windows 7 64-bit install. My FOG server has been saving my legs for quite a while now and i've had previous Sysprepped images working perfectly well, the only issue was we have been using images for each individual computer model... which isn't quite as drastic as it sounds but with the upgrade to 64-bit that is inevitable I chose to create one base image, to be used on pc's and laptops to try and create some form of standardisation... if thats ever possible. So my image has been created, Office etc installed updates as recent as they can be, havent checked for atleast a day all the usual task bar pinnings and now the i can't pull the damn image. You should probably know it is on a single image which I am attempting to have resizable. I think I've seen this before and it was due to the file system being locked due to me pressing the big bad button and the file system needing checking. This isn't the case as i've ran through chkdsk a fair few times and have checked the attributes of the disk via diskpart from which the disk is confident it isn't in a read-only state. Please can someone save my sanity (and my hair) by offering some insight? Many thanks JB_IT

New to Fog. Can upload and deploy images but when I try to do anything advanced it asks for a password. I've tried every one I can think of but can't get it to work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey guys, Ive been playing with Fog for a while now and am having massive issues with it. I can see it has massive potential, and I really want to replace the WDS we currently have. I hav Unbuntu 10.04 and Fog .29 installed. DHCP is on another server with options 066 ad 067 configured. I can pxe boot, install the service, register hoasts etc...but The first problem is running behind a proxy, so updating is iffy at best. I have discovered i can put password"at symbol"proxy.address in the proxy settings on the server but this dosent seem to work for everything, so i'm not 100% sure that fog is installed correctly The second problem (and this is only a recent thing) is the icons and images on the web interface do not display correctly. This is a massive pain when you have to click on images to upload, edit and kill processes, the only way I have found around this is to run in IE (and who really wants to do that), the images are replaced with the red crosses, but are still clickable. After a bit of searching i found that if i edit the httpd.conf file (which is blank.....) and add these 2 lines; EnableSendfile off EnableMMAP off Then the images will appear, seems a bit weird, and I'm sure the first time I installed fog on VirtualBox all the images were there... The third (and final...I promise) problem is when I try to upload an image to the server. It recognises that there is an upload pending and starts loading the correct image, it will backup the MBR, resize and all that jazz ok, although i do see this error now right at the top after it loads init.gz and before it starts resizing atl1c 000:02:00.0: Unable to allocate MSI interrupt Error: -1 I dont know if this is a serious error or not? But after its resized the blue uploading screen will flash for a split second, then it moves on, restores the MBR and resizes the NTFS and starts complaining that it cant move the 50gb temp image that it supposidly uploaded in .5 seconds to the correct folder. Any ideas to any of these problems? I'm going to try and boot up my old virtual fog server to check the httpd.conf file but really, im lost!!

Hi Foggy Edugeekers! Since switching to 2008 we've had a rough ride getting printer deployment working- we're still set on doing it 'properly' under AD but I'd also like to be able to do it via FOG as it seems like it is a damn sight simpler to achieve than doing it via AD however it isn't quite working properly right now. We are running FOG 0.31 under buntu 10.04.2 with a 2008 AD DC and trying to deploy printers to XP SP3 machines. I've setup my printers as per the FOG user guide and when I login to a machine set to have its printer deployed via FOG I choose 'refresh printers' from the FOG menu, FOG then tells me it has installed my printer although nothing appears under Printers and Faxes. If I then look under the printer server properties I can see that FOG has successfully created the required IP port AND installed the printer driver too so I'm at a loss as to why the printer doesn't actually come up. I've tried both 'Add printer' and 'Add and Remove' printers as both a regular unpriv user and a domain admin user with the same result. It would help if I knew where FOG reports any errors with printer deployment - I can't find that under the FOG management UI. Anyone got printers deploying via FOG with a similar setup?

My guess is i need to update the Kernels on our Ubuntu machine for FOG but have no idea how to do it. I booted from another PC into FOG and everything went fine. Any help makes me happy!! J x

Hiya, we're suffering problems imaging Dell Optiplex 740's and have read that we need the Peter Sykes kernel in order to make things 'magically work'. We're on the latest version of fog and the most recent version of ubuntu but we have no idea how to go about compiling/installing fog kernels. The FOG Kernel Updates section on the management GUI sits there forever (it's likely that it is dying on our proxy if it is trying to access the Internet, in whichcase we need to know how to configure whatever it is using in order to work via the proxy). So we don't know how to get the fog kernel section of the management GUI working, and we don't know how to manually compile/install either. Ultimately, we just want to be able to successfully inventory and upload/deploy images to these machines. Please help, Thankee

[fog] PXE Boot Menu Password Causes Failure to connect to DB
mpmackenna posted a topic in O/S Deployment
So my installation of FOG 0.28 on Debian Lenny was working just great. I decided to set passwords in my PXE boot menu options in the GUI. From what I understood you had to do this before you can use the "Quick Image" option on the boot menu. I was also interested in setting a passwords on the registration options in the menu. So I went to the Other Information, PXE Boot Menu, section and entered a password (same one I use for the GUI web interface login) in to all the fields on that page. After I applied those settings my log files are all showing the same line over and over. I tried going back and setting the passwords to blank again. I also tried getting the password from the config.php file that is used for FTP/TFTP and putting that in the Master Password field. I also rebooted the box just for kicks. None of this is undoing the problem that setting a password in the PXE Boot Menu seems to have caused. Any ideas on how I can further troubleshoot this issue would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Mike -
Hi everyone We've been trying to get FOG to join our batch of test computers to our new domain. It has kept failing to do so, so we started digging. Eventually we resorted to using the NETDOM tool manually, where the computer refused to join. We were puzzled, as it was exactly the same as on the FOG Wiki. Looking at the syntax of the command however, I noticed that it uses the : symbol for commands. Our Administrator password contains one of these as a good security measure, but unfortunately, it was causing the NETDOM tool to fail, as it thought that the : in our password was another command. I'm not sure if one can get around this by enclosing the password in quotes or what, but I thought I would share the info. Hopefully this can help someone in the future avoid some headaches. Need to read up some more on the NETDOM tool I think..

Hi all - I'm setting up FOG and having a few problems getting PC's to PXE boot. I've got options 66 & 67 set on a Windows DHCP server to the FOG server's IP address and pxelinux.0 respectively. If I change a client to PXE boot in BIOS, I get the PC trying to DHCP, then (too quickly to see properly) a whole string of error messages. The client then just sits there with a black screen not doing very much at all. Can anyone help me?

Hi All, I am nearing the time when I will need to image all my now non CC3 machines. Typically I now notice a slight issue with my fog server. I have installe fog 0.27 and all appears OK until I try to upload a single partition NTFS resizable image. It fails after trying to resize the partition with an error like this... ftp_rename() [function.ftp-rename: RNFR command failed in var/www/fog/service/Post_Stage2.php on line 133. having looked on line 133 it says... if (ftp_rename ( $ftp, $src, $dest ) || ftp_rename ( $ftp, $srcdd, $dest )) I can see that the renaming of the file is failing but not sure how I can fix this Does anyone have any suggestions or come across this before?

This is not a defo go ahead plan, more of a curiosity got the better of me question. I was wondering if anyone has a FOG server working inside a RM CC3 network? I was thinking that if I got a FOG server up and running, it would cut the build time of the machines in half. The plan was that I could have an image set ready to roll out that had just gone through the commissioning tools and was at the screen asking you for a computer name, setup username & password and where you wanted it in the active directory. This means that XP is already installed and all that CC3 needs to do is install its vast collections of "tools" and software that we have assigned to OU's in AD. Am I right in assuming I could do this? I was planning on having only 2 or 3 images as we only have 2 or 3 sets of different types of machines, most all have the same hardware. Any feedback or advice on this would be great! Thanks

Hi guys, We are experimenting with FOG at the moment, alongside our WDS+MDT installation to try and speed up things such as laptops. FOG is working fine(ish) and is chugging along quite happily pulling/pushing images and renaming machines. However, it is not joining them to the domain? I have seen references to netdom which to my knowledge is not in Win7 any more - so at present is FOG capable of this, and if so, where am I going wrong with it? Cheers people!
