Free VM. I suppose we could probably use the downgrade rights in some way to get Enterprise but I'd rather keep things standardised where possible and all our other VMs are Datacenter (except two Windows 2003 VMs we have - a Terminal Server and the existing FSMO master DC!)

See that's what I thought but I keep asking myself 'why mention it under Domain Controllers but not Schema Master or Global Catalog?'

Hey everyone We're about to start deploying Ex2010 but I'm confused: MS say that in a 2008R2 environment, the minimum requirements for the Schema Master are 2008R2 Standard or Enterprise but makes no mention of Datacenter The same is true for Global Catalog server requirements When you get to Domain Controllers, however, it does list Datacenter as well as Enterprise and Standard Does this mean I have to have a 2008R2 Standard/Enterprise machine around despite having Datacenter licenses? My head says this can't be correct as there's no real difference between Ent and Data, but why list it as valid for one situation and not for others?

Sorry - should have made things clearer! Not planning on raising the functional level (yet), I was just trying to illustrate that I remember restarting *at some point* including when raising the level! So general consensus is that I will probably not need to restart Thank you!

Hi guys We're looking at adding a 2008 R2 DC to an existing 2003 environment. I know that I'll have to update the AD schema with adprep on the Schema Master etc, but will I have to reboot my DCs? I ask as I remember adding a 2008 R1 DC to a 2003 environment and raising the functional level. When we raised the level, we had to restart all the DCs but I don't remember if I had to do this after preparing AD for the first server as well Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi everyone I'm trying to set up ThinStation to point at either our VMWare ESX or any of our RDP servers as a proof of concept but I can't make head nor tail of how to do anything with it All I want is a 'LiveCD' but ThinStation and I seem to have very different idea of what a LiveCD is - I'm used to Linux LiveCDs where I download an ISO and burn it to disc. I put this in a PC and switch the machine on. It boots from the CD as if I had installed the contents on the hard disk but without making any changes to the installed O/S This is what I want to do but if this isn't possible (I have no idea how the livecd.exe you can download from their site fits in to my understanding of a LiveCD...) then I would settle for having to install it on a VM as I have VirtualBox which should be ok for it but I can't find any documentation anywhere which discusses tells me how to really do any of this! I have found some bits which say 'modify the build.conf as required for your hardware' but I've also read somewhere that the build.conf isn't really one specific file or something crazy like that! If anyone knows any resources that can help (or knows what I've misread) then I'd really appreciate it! Thanks

Didn't know OSX Server had any support for virtualisation! That's still pretty cool and certainly nice for anyone wanting to get an OSX server set up without outlay for some powerful Apple hardware OSX is an option on my Win XP install of VB. Cool

Licence agreements don't stop software manufacturers - it's only the customers (you and me) who would be breaking the agreement if we tried to install the software on a VM It's probably only available for OSX hosts anyway - Parallels has a Mac product which can virtualise OSX

Does anyone know if this is OSX as a guest on a Windows/Linux host? If so, that would make a massive difference in a test environment, especially if you can virtualise OSX Server (that would make a difference in a production environment, too!)

Chrome uses the Control Panel Internet Options so you won't have to lock that down any more than normal but its own settings are open for all Given that it's open source, you could always write your own version with them locked... ;-)

Extract it anywhere, go in to the "ManagePC\bin\Release" folder to find the exe. Works with AD to find the list of computers and integrates with your VNC viewer. Loads of great information. What's all that from? the MSInfo32.exe you mentioned? This site is for sending to users who don't know their system well ("Go here and e-mail me the results using the buttons at the top" style)

Ah, it'll probably just be aware of the Kernal or something as 2008R2 is the server version of Win 7 and since it's only meant to be used for gathering info for tech support, it probably doesn't expect you to be running Server!
