Hi All As you'll all know (and perhaps even be bored of hearing by now) we've been G Suite Partners for quite some time now. Instead of keeping a focus on the tech/chromebook side of things we've always been more honed on the services side. From our ongoing Ipad buyback, to our parental contribution scheme all the way through to our raft of G Suite project and support offerings. We've recently refreshed them, cutting them from 6 down to 3. We felt the need to simplify and bring more of them together, here's how we did it

Hi all, I have inherited a Unify controller which is running on a Windows PC, servicing 15 AC-PRO access points. Today I wanted to sign in to the controller's web page but it was not accessible (signing in at localhost, RDP-ing on to the box). The UbiquityUnify2 and Unifi Controller services are stopped and do not restart. Rebooting has no effect -services still don't start There is a 'start ubiquity' batch file. If you run this as administrator, it takes ages to do anything, then returns "Port 8080 is not available". Services don't start. Sign in page still not available. The localhost controller webpage says connection refused. Being new to Ubiquity: 1) Should the services start on their own? They're set to Automatic in services.msc 2) Do I have to run the 'start ubiquity' batch file, or should it be the services running the show? 3) Why does this seem to have spontaneously died? Any advice welcome

I have a hard drive that powers up, makes a some ticking noises then shuts down. It contains (as they always do!) somebodies important files. Can anyone suggest a company that deal in data recovery that they have had some success with? Many thanks

Hello, I am engaged in a number of conversations about the renewal of the old Becta ICT Services Framework, regarding which the DfE and the Government Procurement Service are currently consulting with industry. I would be very interested in any feedback from Edugeek members about your experience or perception of major infrastructure procurement in schools and colleges. Relevant questions that occur to me are: * How easy is it to procure significant ICT infrastructure for your school/college? * How useful was the old ICT Services Framework (or indeed frameworks in general)? * How easy is it to get reliable advice about (a) what to buy, and (b) how to buy it? * To what extent do you think your local requirements could be standardised (assuming that was a participative process) and to what extent do you feel that your local requirements are unique? * What are the main pitfalls that you need to guard against when procuring significant infrastructure (e.g. companies that go bust, proprietary lock-in, lack of pricing transparency, poor requirements analysis...) * What is your perception of the benefits of aggregated procurement as a way of saving money? * How important are OJEU (EU) procurement rules, which kick-in for public procurements valued at more than £150K? * How easy is it to get information comparing the performance and value of competing products? * How valuable would it be to have a "G-Cloud for Education" - i.e. an online catalogue of IT products for education, with transparent pricing, certifications and star-ratings? ...and any other questions that occur to you. This is not a scientific survey, of course, but if people are prepared to post their thoughts and experiences in reasonable numbers, I would be happy to do some legwork collating them, so that they can be shared with the DfE, the Governmnt Procurement Service, and other interested parties. While the current consultation is about the ICT Services Framework, the Information Management and Learning Services Framework will also come round for renewal in a couple of years and some of the same questions might apply again. Thanks for any feedback you can give, Crispin Weston

I have a virtual server running Windows Server 2012 Standard where one of the services is not listed when I run Services.msc [screen prints follow] Running Services.msc I get this view: http://i.snag.gy/NsCRG.jpg The service I am currently interested in is only listed when I right click the taskbar, select Task Manager and select the Services tab from there: http://i.snag.gy/O5GDH.jpg This is an issue because the service I am interested in is stopping too often and I can't set it to auto restart from this interface after it has stopped. When the service was running on a physical 2008 server it was listed in the first listing [and when I first installed the service on the virtual service that is where I found it. It is only recently that it has [spontaneously?] moved to the second listing. What has happened? How can I get this service to restart automatically after it has stopped when it should not? Hope this is clear. Thanks.

Hi all, We've been having a problem with one of our servers over the past week. The LanmanServer service keeps hanging, and once it does it can't be restarted through the services MMC or using taskkill without force restarting the whole server (normal shutdown / restart just wait on the 'Restarting' screen). When it hangs, file shares become unresponsive and users are not able to log on or access files. There is nothing obvious logged in the event logs leading up to the problem, and it happens at random times during the day (it's happened twice within an hour and a half today, and not just when students are logging on for lessons). The server is fully responsive if you log into the console via Hyper-V manager (through RDP does not work) and there are no spikes or high usage logged in task manager or resource montor. I have tried to log it through Process Monitor, but it crashes out and doesn't save the backing files. Over the weekend this problem was not happening (as in I could browse file shares throughout the weekend, but there weren't any other users on the network) and all of our servers were restarted just in case there was something funny going on between them. The server in question is a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V client, running AD, DNS and user home file shares, and the problem started last Tuesday. I have only been able to find one other question like this on the Internet, located here Windows Server Enterprise server service flakes out - Stack Overflow Members of our SMT are now asking what is causing it and for it to be resolved, but so far all that definitely fixes the problem for a temporary measure is force restarting the server which obviously isn't ideal. Any help or advice will be appreciated. Please ask if you need more information or clarifications.

Hello, Suddenly our Sophos Enterprise Console isn't working. It just throws up the window (see attached) any help appreciated! Not sure if it's anything to do with this recent 'Updater-B' blunder.

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can tell me if you are able to set a time window on TS so that users can only connect between certain hours when working offsite. For security reasons one of our Governors does not want people being able to connect after midnight and before 6am. Is it also possible to lock an account after three wrong attempts to log in? Many thanks for anyone who can help.

Hello everyone, We have just migrated our SIMS server from Server 2008 Enterprise to Server 2012 R2 Standard. As well as this we have also migrated the database from SQL 2008 to SQL 2012. It all seems to be working as expected, however, when we open SIMS Services Manager, and click on the "Schools" link, it has a red "X" symbol next to the school and when you mouse over, it says, "Error connecting". Has anyone got a solution to this? Many thanks in advance.

hi, please let me know what you think making a customer service call center more prompt and professional would do for the customer and the company. Thanks

Hello Everyone, We are having a very strange issue regarding printers:... We currently use a WSF script to map printers to clients. The problem is that on some clients the print spooler service will crash out and stop - the event log just says that the Print Spooler service terminated unexpectedly. This issue appears to be random as it seems to affect some computers and not others and some users. Every user has a mandatory profile specified so I don't think it is a profile issue. We have tried changing from a script method of mapping printers to using the Group Policy Preferences (Server 2008 R2) printer connections but this has not helped. We use McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i for anti-virus - is there anyway that this could be affecting the mapping of the printers? Thanks in advance! J.Worth.
