I was asked to have a look at a laptop by somebody as a favour. This laptop is used by the guys kid and I'm pretty sure he's picked up a load of malware or a virus. The laptop is running XP Pro and it boots up OK and presents you with the Welcome screen. Selecting the user then pops up the loading user settings message and then immediately displays the saving settings and logging off messages I've run ClamAV across it (from Knoppix) and deleted a load of adware. I've also used an offline registry editor to check the Winlogon keys for dodgy entries. It still doesn't work! It's really go t me stumped now this but curiosity has got the better of me and I don't just want to wipe it and start again.

Hey guys, I was just browsing this thread and a virus popup popped up. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-vista/49203-vista-has-ground-halt.html http://img442.yfrog.com/img442/7610/edugeekvirusad.png is it my machine as I only had this page open. (for a change)

Hello, Suddenly our Sophos Enterprise Console isn't working. It just throws up the window (see attached) any help appreciated! Not sure if it's anything to do with this recent 'Updater-B' blunder.

Hi, I would like to find out how other schools are tackling the following problem. We have been blocking IP address browsing for a while now due to having a large number of infections coming from websites using IP addresses as opposed to URL's. All of these websites seem to impersonate "My Computer" for Windows XP and make you think that your PC is infected and usually install an infection which poses as an antivirus. We are using Bloxx Web Filter which has an antivirus built in (I can't remember which one it uses) and Symantec Endpoint Protection and neither of them were catching the infections. I spoke to Symantec on a few occasions and their answer is always "download this tool and it will remove the infection for you". But if that's the case, what's the point in having Symantec Endpoint Protection if it doesn't stop infections and instead I have to download a tool and manually remove the infection every 5 minutes? I've also spoken to Bloxx and they just ask me for the address so they can add it to their URL database. But there are so many of them and it wouldn't surprise me if they are continuously changing their addresses, so this isn't going to help much. The problem we have now is that websites such as BBC iPlayer and S4C Clic stream all of their media from IP addresses. So staff are now understandably unhappy because they can't access videos they want to use in their lessons. I agree that they should be able to use these two websites in particular (maybe some others too). I thought of simply unblocking the specific IP addresses used by these two websites, but first of all I don't have a list of them (and neither do Bloxx) and second, even if I can get hold of a list I don't know if or how often these addresses are going to change. This isn't going to be any good if teachers are planning their lessons around these videos only to find that on the day the IP's have changed and the videos are blocked again. So my questions are: 1) Is anybody else having/had the problem with these viruses coming from IP based websites? (I have seen similar websites using URL's but the majority seem to be IP addresses.) - a) Do you have a solution for this problem other than blocking IP addresses? 2) Is there anybody blocking IP addresses with a solution for allowing BBC iPlayer and S4C Clic? 3) How many schools are blocking IP addresses? Are we part of a small group or do most schools do this? 4) Does anybody have any other tips or advice? Thanks in advance, Daniel

It doesn't go into any detail about which particular botnet it was, but the guy has been given a 41 month prison sentence and a $65k fine. Also, props to Sophos for helping with the international investigation. Bearing in mind that this was a US federal court, I think they've been a little lenient really. Should have been at least 5 years, and a much larger fine as he likely made a large amount of money from the botnet. BBC NEWS | Technology | Jail sentence for botnet creator

A local school has just started putting at the end of there emails 'It is your responsibility to scan this message for viruses'. If you receive a email, legally who is liable for the virus? The sender for sending the virus or the receiver for not scanning it? Is this something my schools should look into doing? Cheers Dsquared2

I am not a Facebook user myself but I thought that this little snippet of 'breaking' news might be helpful to some here: Source: Fake Facebook E-Mail contains Trojan

We've just noticed this moring that Sophos has started detecting part of the ActivBoard software as a virus-infected file. See below for details :- File "C:\Program Files\Activ Software\ActivstudioPE3\ACTIVcalc.exe" belongs to virus/spyware 'Mal/VBCrypt-C' We've contacted Sophos regarding the problem and are wait to hear back from them. This might well be the end of the road for Sophos in our school!

Anybody else using Smoothwall and having aqa.org.uk blocked due to HTML.IFrame-39?

We have been using Game Maker 8 for some time, but recently when running games, are Anti Virus (McAfee 8.7i) is detecting "Trojans" within the C: Temp folder. I don't believe they are genuine Trojans but McAfee is obviously detecting them as they are trying to acccess the Temp folder. Has anybody else experienced this? Disabling the On-Access Scanner will allow the program to run correctly but this is no good long term. Cheers

Hi Guys, We have on our Network an old Iomega Nas 400m. Recently it got infected with the Conficker virus (marvellous). Since then it no longer works, we cannot connect it to the network. I have also tried on an isolated switch with no joy. Does anybody know how I could get around this. The fantastic design only allows you to administer remotely. As it is so old the Recovery DVD has gone walkabout so thats not an option for us - unless anyone has one they could share?! Many Thanks

Hi all, I'm looking at web filtering options (SW, Forefront, Bloxx, SmartCache2 plus a few others...) for emPSN contracts Nov 2012+ and would like to know if anti-malware scanning on web filtering is something that anyone uses and what are your reasons for/not having it? (be it cost, necessary or otherwise...) Just out of interest; does anyone know whether there is anti-malware scanning on the current EMBC Netsweeper filter? (I've found no references to the web threat management module in all of the docs from embc in the technical area. Waiting for Synetrix(Capita ITS) to get back to me.) Cheers Rob

I was wondering if I could query edugeek on what schools allow pupils to use their own usb sticks? Could someone make a poll? I was discussing it here and I don't want (or see the need for USB access) ((VLE FROG and O365 access provided))

I currently use NOD32 antivirus in my Win 8.1 environment and have been happy with it. BUT it costs real money about £1200 a year. I'm thinking that I'll just roll out Windows 10 with defender, The PCs are all locked down have LAPS and the users are running with standard privileges. I loose central reporting but I can't think of a real issue. Anyway sanity check from people here?
