Has anyone on here edited the standard msgina to create a better looking logon box? I want to replace the WindowsXP Proffessional logo with our school logo :-) and some other information. I've been reading about reshacker which is an application that lets me do this, but I just wondered if anyone had done it and was it an easy process to follow. I've also read about pGina but am not sure about using software that isn't maintaned any more by the developer. Many thanks Gareth

I was asked to have a look at a laptop by somebody as a favour. This laptop is used by the guys kid and I'm pretty sure he's picked up a load of malware or a virus. The laptop is running XP Pro and it boots up OK and presents you with the Welcome screen. Selecting the user then pops up the loading user settings message and then immediately displays the saving settings and logging off messages I've run ClamAV across it (from Knoppix) and deleted a load of adware. I've also used an offline registry editor to check the Winlogon keys for dodgy entries. It still doesn't work! It's really go t me stumped now this but curiosity has got the better of me and I don't just want to wipe it and start again.

I have a problem with random computers on the network hanging at 'saving your settings', I've checked msconfig, done virus/spyware scans and disabled sophos but it still seems to be occuring. Has anyone had this issue before?

This is a strange one for you guys! We have mandatory profiles for our pupils and have done for a long time without any problems. Recently I have been getting complaints about machines taking 10mins or so to log off. That has been since we returned from the holidays. Nothing has been changed as I was off for the 2 weeks. I have checked the usual places event logs on machine servers but there is nothing. I have checked permissions with no luck. I have UHPS installed but that makes no difference. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Rob

The attached KIX script can be run during your logoff procedure to check if a user has left any USB Mass Storage devices plugged into the computer. This includes USB Sticks! Although devices such as USB CD/DVD drives will not be detected, USB Card Readers will be picked up. This is by design (for us at least), as Card Readers here are loaned from the IT Dept so on logoff need to be returned. Some Internal Card Readers are connected by a motherboard Internal USB connection and appear as USB Card Readers; these need to be added to the exemptions list in the script. e.g. ; Insert device IDs here for devices which are permanently attached to a computer DIM $Exemptions[3] $Exemptions[0] = "&VEN_TEAC&PROD_USB___HS-CF_CARD&" ; Internal card reader for Dell OptiPlex 740 $Exemptions[1] = "&VEN_TEAC&PROD_USB___HS-MS_CARD&" ; Internal card reader for Dell OptiPlex 740 $Exemptions[2] = "&VEN_TEAC&PROD_USB___HS-SD_CARD&" ; Internal card reader for Dell OptiPlex 740 $Exemptions[3] = "&VEN_TEAC&PROD_USB___HS-XD/SM&" ; Internal card reader for Dell OptiPlex 740 If amending this list don't forget to change the Variable Declaration! To find the device id to be added to the exemptions list, check Device Manager > (a Device) > Details > Device Instance ID. Enjoy! (Released under GPL). CheckForUSBStorage.zip

We are becoming more and more confused by this little problem: We have a logon script to map drives and logoff script to remove them. These are implemented by the user on Server 2003. On logon all users encounter the script error: "Local device name already in use" Code: 8007055 Source: WSHNetwork.MapNetworkDrive The line and character references point to a "G:" drive. On logoff all users encounter the script error: "Network connection doesn't exist" Code: 800708CA Source: WSHNetwork.RemoveNetworkDrive Again the line and character references point to the "G:" drive. Therefore, users are unable to disconnect from the "G:" drive as it apparently does not exist (which is does as it is visible) but adversely are unable to connect at logon as it "already exists". Peculiar no? When executing the scripts locally on a computer they run correctly so could it be a server problem? Thanks Michael

I was trying to apply the re-index patch to my SIMS server last night but it kept failing saying it couldn't get exclusive access to the database. I had a quick peep at who was logged in, using Solus, and it told me mobile_access - the username used by SIMS Mobile. Try as I might, I couldn't kick the user out: I shut down SIMS mobile on the server on which it's installed (not the SIMS server), restarted SQL, etc, but just couldn't get mobile_access to log off. Consequently I couldn't perform the reindex at all (and, more importantly, was late to bed ). I've had similar problems in the past with users who've left themselves logged onto SIMS over the weekend (gaaah!) when I need to do updates. I've rebooted their PCs (remotely of course), changed their passwords & logged into and out of SIMS as them, rebooted the SIMS server, etc, etc, but have never been able to get them out. So the question is: how do I kick any/all users out of SIMS? With the old DOS version you could log in as System Manager, disable logins, and then boot everyone off. But how do you do this with the SQL version (preferably without resorting to a hammer & blowtorch)? Did someone forget to add this function? Or have I missed something?
