Hello Edugeekers, I’m sure you’re all probably aware that in one way or another BT Openreach has something to do with the installation and service of the vast majority of full fibre leased lines throughout the country. I must admit I’m pleasantly surprised by BT Openreach’s announcement on Tuesday this week. Ofcom (The UK’s telecoms regulator) has ruled that BT Openreach held significant market power and therefore should be subject to tighter regulation of pricing. Although this was supposed to be on high speed fibre leased lines of 1Gbit and above, BT Openreach has also slashed costs of leased line connectivity of BT Ethernet Access Direct and BT Ethernet Access Direct Local Access circuits. Discounts on rentals of 25% on wholesale EAD LA circuits and 33% on point to point EAD circuits by BT Openreach on 100Mbit circuits will help drive the installation of faster Internet and point to point leased line circuits to schools and educational establishments throughout the UK. The average 100Mbit direct leased line connection when using BT fibre has now reduced by nearly £1,000pa compared to our old pricing. We’ve also passed on the £1,200pa saving on all point to point EAD leased line circuits immediately. Slashing the costs of 100Mbit circuits by BT will help drive faster speeds for primary and secondary schools throughout the country. Although the new pricing doesn’t come into effect until 1st May we are already offering the updated pricing on all quotations. Do let me or any of the other sponsors on this page know if you’d like a quote

Hello, I want to know if there are any schools out there that run a inter-school Gaming competition. And if anyone here has had any experience in running one if they could give me some pointers in how to run it. In our local aria we have a group called GIS (gippsland independent schools) where 16 of the local schools compete against each other in sports before moving on to other zones. i would like to run a similar system were i can have multiple schools enrol teams of 5 - 10 to meet at a conmen venue with BYO pc's (student owned.) Equipment is no issue as I own enough to run gaming lans but running it in association with schools i understand that things need to run different in terms of duty of care, working with children checks, public liability, etc... Other schools have expressed interest in the idea but no one has been involved in a program like this so i am asking you guys and girls what you think of the idea links and contacts are much appreciated. Cheers Toxic (AKA Lee ITS StPauls AGS)

What College did you attend and how was the wi-fi/connection there? I first attended Moorpark Community College, then transferred to University of California, San Diego. Connection at UCSD was horrible at times when you had your own laptop. Cramming for a test online proved to be impossible at UCSD during finals week!

Hi there =] Right, we are in the process of putting in a suite of 30 machines. All of the computers in the school at the moment except 1 ICT suite are dual boot Mac with windows XP Pro 32-Bit. I have been thinking about putting the new ICT suite in with Windows 7 BUT i am not sure whether we put 32-Bit or 64-Bit on them. I am not sure whether the 64-Bit version will have any conflicts with any of the servers which are running Server 2003. I know there may be a few issues with the kids/pupils using Windows 7 but that isn't the issue. If anyone has any views or comments please reply. I am more inclined to go 64-Bit as that appears to be the way things are going. Cheers

How do RM and the like actually go about delivering managed services under the BSF contracts. Is it a case of having in-house technicians, backed up by a team of mobile technicians, and a call centre/3rd line support somewhere? Or is it a lot more simple than that? Quite curious about how they actually go about doing this, since the way these companies are delivering on these contracts clearly isn't working out. Thanks

I'm a software engineer who has been researching the MIS systems schools are currently using. I've seen a lot of feedback on this website regarding why users like one system over the other, but would love to get more feedback as we are looking to create a new piece of software. I understand that the industry doesn't need a new piece of software, but our approach isn't to build something that already exists better. Rather we want to rethink how schools/teachers/parents use the systems around the education of their students/children. Any feedback on what you love about the systems you're currently using as well as some of your pain points would be great.

You may be aware that I recently spoke at BarCampMediaCity and at PyConUK about a vision I had called 'BBC CodeLab'. Except at the time, I didn't explain it was a vision - I described it as a reality. The stunt I pulled did upset some people, however a group of people expressed an interest in a new BBC Micro Project. The BBC have asked Keri Facer, Professor of Education at Manchester Metropolitan Uni to investigate the strength of feeling behind this. You can email KdotFACERatMMUdotACdotUK directly and express an interest in the project. She will reply with an email that looks like this... If you feel strongly about this, I encourage you to respond. No bystanders please! --+++-----+++++++--------+++++++----------+++++++++++++++---------------------+++++++++++ Hi all Thanks for expressing an interest in informing a possible new BBC Micro Project and thanks to all of you for the comments you have already sent - apologies for the group reply, but your help with the following would be very much appreciated! Best wishes Keri Invitation to contribute The BBC is exploring the possibility of developing a new ‘BBC Micro’ project to encourage an interest amongst young people in computers, computational thinking and computer science. Manchester Metropolitan University is working with the BBC to draw on the views of teachers, lecturers, computer scientists, programmers and others with an interest in computational thinking in the UK today. We would appreciate your assistance in helping to inform the early stages of this process. First, a bit of background: In the early 1980s, the BBC started what became known as the BBC Computer Literacy Project in response to predictions of a coming microcomputer revolution and its likely future impacts on UK economy and society. The BBC based its project around a computer and programming language capable of being used to perform various tasks which would be demonstrated in a TV series The Computer Programme. The list of topics in the TV programme included graphics, programming, sound and music, controlling external hardware, artificial intelligence and teletext The computer selected was the Acorn Proton, which was then re-badged the BBC Micro. The government funded the purchase and distribution of 12,000 of the computers to UK schools for use alongside the TV programme. In turn this stimulated a significant growth in domestic use of the Micro. Today, there is criticism of the ICT curriculum and the teaching of programming (or computational thinking) in schools. The Royal Society, amongst others, believe that design and delivery of ICT and computer science curricula in schools is so poor that students’ understanding and enjoyment of the subject is severely limited. In response to this the BBC is exploring the possibility of developing a project with the specific purpose of encouraging an interest in computers, computer science and computer programming amongst young people. We would like to know your views on what the BBC could do in this area. In particular, what you would see as the desirable equivalent of the BBC Micro and The Computer Programme today? What technologies and processes, what tools and skills would such a project need to develop? In particular, we would appreciate answers to the specific questions below (NB, we use the term computational thinking rather than computer science, programming, or ICT skills because we don’t want to assume one particular view of what is important in this area. That, indeed, is what we want your views on). Key questions What aspects of computational thinking (e.g. understanding how ‘computers think/work’, using programming languages, understanding systems thinking or other issues) should a BBC Micro 2.0 project focus on? What do you think people should be able to learn to do with computers today? Why? What are the best ways to support and encourage those young people (aged 9-14) with an interest in this area, to develop their interest and skills in computational thinking ? Can you suggest any examples of resources or activities that you know of? What are the best ways to support and encourage young people (aged 9-14) with other interests to develop an interest in and understanding of computational thinking? Can you suggest any examples of resources or activities that you know of? What are the key obstacles to learning computational thinking and how might these best be overcome? If you were to make hardware available to schools in the same way as the BBC Micro in 1981, what sorts of hardware would you think was essential to develop the skills and understanding needed? If you were designing a tv programme today that sought to have the same effect as The Computer Programme in stimulating interest in the most important new area of technological development, what area would you expect it to address and what topics would you expect it to cover? Would it still be in the field of computer science? What areas? Do you know of any projects, resources and activities that would be examples that this project could learn from? Do you have any other comments on the idea of a new BBC Micro project? Thank you for your time and your help – do let us know if you’d like to be kept updated if there are further developments.

I am so pleased to have found this site. I wish I'd stumbled across it a long time ago. I hope I might have something ready in the next couple of months that might interest those of you who are interested in creating web spaces for your students. I'm aware that there are some people offering hosting for schools (such as edutechhosting), but mine is based around a custom hosting management system rather than the free provision of a hosted domain. I am a FE ICT teacher (although my background is secondary) and I'm also studying for an MSc in Internet Apps Development. After recent issues related to web hosting for students at my college I have decided to create a free hosting service for schools for my major MSc project. The idea is to create a web-based service where teachers can sign up their school and add class lists (in a format like xls) and the system creates separate folders on the server for each class->student. Usernames and password would be created for each student on-the-fly that allow students to log in and upload folders/files in an ftp-like interface (without the need for a local ftp client). Then each student would have their own website address (the following links don't work) Note that no domain purchase is required: school.hostdomain.com/class/student eg. stjohns.achost.com/10C/debbie Teachers are able to administer students accounts, and certain security measures can be put in place to prevent access from outside the school (if required- by IP) and password protect sites from public view (if required- by htaccess) and also locking accounts to prevent late submission, modification and deletion of coursework (if required). Also the idea is to have a facility to allow teachers to download a local copy of the class' work to a CD for exams board/ moderator submission, etc (or the exam board could view the sites live). Essentially it will be a streamlined, highly manageable system for teachers, providing only basic hosting, but providing additional security/privacy and download options customised for schools. Incidentally, my intention is to provide only simple file hosting, so no databases or server side scripts- but I know there are people getting their students playing with Joomla et al, so if your students need php/mysql/etc then I could look into implementing these things later. It's an ambitious project but I'm already well underway with the development (I'll place a link when I have something ready to show off). At this stage I'd be interested in hearing from school staff who might be interested in such a service or those with concerns or suggestions. I have an arrangement to trial the system at my current college, but I'd be interested in hearing from people for the following things: General indications of interest, especially in trialling and providing feedback on its use. Anyone with security/privacy/DPA/technical concerns to such a thing (This is a biggy as far as I'm concerned, and your input would be valuable) As well as teachers, I'd love to hear from network managers, as it will take some effort to get such a system working consistently in the minefield that are LA/School firewalls. I want network managers to be happy with the integrity of the system. Also, exam board representatives about their requirements and initiatives as far as online coursework goes. As a teacher I think I can fulfill their criteria, but it'd be nice to have some dialog For absolutely any comments or more details please don't hesistate to reply to this post or email me on andy at websitesfast dot co dot uk I will be ready to release the beta to 3-5 schools for testing mid-October and if you'd be interested in trying it out I'd absolutely love to hear from you. Ultimately I'm after teachers/schools who would allow me to conduct an in-depth study of how the system is being used and its implications on teaching and learning.
