The shiny school website at Baines School » Nil Sine Labore will tell you more about the place. As you can imagine, all the usual bells and whistles are in place and things tend to tick along nicely. I've even got cabling diagrams, test results and documentation for things! A quick list of some of the technologies used: Windows - Server 2008R2 and 7 Macs XenServer XenApp Citrix Secure Gateway Sun Rays Systems Center FEP (plus the lovely Sophos for protecting the Macs) Lync - including Enterprise Voice Exchange - with Exchange UM SQL Server SIMS Smoothwall - a very nice UTM BlueSocket managed wireless HP switches throughout EMC AX100s Sun/Oracle S7110s Sun/Oracle SL24 autoloader Approx 350 client devices BYOC scheme for sixth form students It is a very varied job and you will be given quite a bit of freedom to do what you want. Your first job will even be choosing a new apprentice! All the printers are leased and pay-per-click too so if they go wrong you just ring and someone turns up to fix them I cannot confirm payscales or other details yet as the job hasn't been advertised. The post is available from mid-September. If you want to ask any more questions about the set up or school, post questions below. I have been working at this primary school for 3 years now but unfortunately we have no money at all in our IT budget. There are many reasons for this but the main one is that we bought 36 laptops 4 years ago brand new in trolleys that just are not up to the job. Batteries and wireless problems are the main problem. (Unfixable with no money). So back to basics is the plan second user crt monitors from the local high school are abundant so we need some donated base units with xp pro license (oem attached) with original recovery media if available for compliance. 2 gb processors and 512 memory would be nice as a minimum spec but would not mind adding some second hand memory etc they dont need mint. Has anyone ever done this before or attempted to do this before? Can your school/business offer any donated base units? We plan to use work experience people to help us install the units. Openoffice and other freeware and our existing site licensed software like textbase textease etc If you can help us please PM me or reply to this thread.

Hi guys, Does anyone know of any Network manager, Deputy Network Manager or IT technician roles that are going in the Preston, Blackburn, Pendle or Ribble Valley area? I've been working in the IT industry for the past 6 years in both the Private and Public sector and am looking to get back into the Education Support environment. Any information would be hugely appreciated! T.B.

Stuffs breaking all around me no money to spend ever so on here to ask for your help. I need 6 x monitors crt or tft (if they work ok are fine.) and some basestations or laptops P4 512 ram or above if possable. Can collect from Lancashire / Cumbria no problem possably further please pm me with anything you can help us with. (primary school IT Tec)

I'm particularly interested in hearing from Lancashire schools but input from Cumbria is also welcomed. It's that time of year that we have to pay The Westfield Centre vast quantities of cash for SIMS support (on top of the vast sums for SIMS licensing). I don't have a problem with paying for the support, I mearly question the value for money that we receive. I have spoken to The Westfield Centre and am awaiting a reply next week as to whether a support contract better suited to my situation will be possible - we have no need of remote upgrades, disaster recovery and server loan and nobody from the school has ever heard of a 'User Day' until now! So to my questions... does anybody receive their support from anyone else - e.g. Capita? Also, is the current offering from Westfield actually better value fopr money than it appears?
