Hello everyone, I know that there are 3 versions of STP - STP, RSTP and MSTP. We have a mixture of Netgear GSM7224, GS724TP, and GS748T. My question is, how do we setup STP for our network? We have a flat network. Should we enable RSTP for switches that have client machines connected (edge switches) to them and then use the ordinary STP version for our core switches? Thanks in advance! Hello Everyone! We are still having problems with the MyFiles part of HAP. We are wanting to make this live ready for September and would like to use the MyFiles part as it looks quite good. Hello everyone! I was just wondering if anybody knows where I can get the SIMS.net Green Abbey School training data from as I would like to test out some things in SIMS but would rather not use the "real" SIMS data and would also not like to make a duplicate of our "real" SIMS data. The main reason for this is that I would like to install SIMS.net on a standalone laptop computer. Thanks in advance, J. Worth.

Hello everyone, We are currently in the process of deploying RemoteApp in school to allow staff to access SIMS.net etc from home. However, we would like to set complex password policies on staff user accounts only so that it does not affect student accounts. I have heard that you can only have one password policy on a domain network. My question is, how can we setup a password policy for staff without it affecting our student accounts? Thanks in advance! Hello everyone, We are looking at implementing Moodle and were just wondering how to go about exporting classes and students that are in those classes from SIMS.net into Moodle. We have heard that you can export using an IMS link - can we set this to just export classes and the students are in those classes? We are going to use LDAP authentication and the users that are in Active Directory are created separately - i.e the students are not exported from SIMS.net into AD. Thanks in advance. J.Worth.

Hello everyone, We currently use Studywiz at school which everyone (teachers and students) dislikes due to its clunkiness and illogical way of working. We are just wanting a view as to what platforms other schools are using as their VLE. We are going to install Moodle 2.x onto an old (physical) server (pre-virtualisation!) and have a play with it to see how we could set it up in the best possible way. We are going to use LDAP authentication for user logins. How easy is Moodle to use, navigate and maintain? Also, how can we export classes and students assigned to those classes out of SIMS into Moodle? Thanks in advance, J.Worth

Hello Everyone! We are trying to setup an RDS Farm and are confused with what certificates we need to use. Our setup is as follows: Server 1 - Internet Facing (remote.domain.com (joined to domain.local)) - RD Gateway - RD Web Access - RD Licensing - RD Connection Broker Server 2 - Non-Internet Facing (Session1.domain.local) - RD Session Host Server 3 - Non-Internet Facing (Session2.domain.local) - RD Session Host The confusion lies in signing the remoteApps. As they reside on a server that has a .local domain how can I get these to be signed by a Public Certification Authority? We are currently looking a purchasing a Wilcard certificate - *.domain.com and obviously this cannot be used for the session hosts. So my final question is how can I sign these remoteApps so that they can be used externally without any issues. I hope that the above makes sense! Thanks in advance. J.Worth

Hello Everyone, We are trying to get multicasting setup so that we can quickly deploy operating system images to multiple computers. We have a flat network (no VLANs) and our switches are a mixture of Netgear GSM7224 and Netgear GS724TP. We also have two HP Procurve 2510G-24 switches that serve as the core (They connect together our three HyperV hosts and SAN). We have enabled IGMP Snooping on each switch and they seem to have built a Multicast Forwarding Database Table, with a type of "Dynamic" and description of "Network Assist". Is this the only configuration that we need to do, or is there anything else that we could do to improve the speed of multicasting? Would enabling Jumbo Frames on each of the switches help improve performance? Also, can I increase the size of the packet window (think thats the correct term :S) as we are just deploying over the LAN and therefore the connection is reliable. Thanks in advance, J.Worth.

Hello, We currently use InfoPath forms for teachers to submit their incident reports/slips. However, when the user submits this it emails the relevant member(s) of staff based on the selection made by the member of staff filling in the form. I have been asked by the senior leadership team to see if there is a way of submitting the form directly into the behaviour section of SIMS for that particular student. (I only know how to install SIMS.net but not use it - hence the rather vague "behaviour section of SIMS" phrase!). My first thoughts are that this would not be possible but I would just to ask the question to see if anyone else has got a way of doing this. Thanks in advance, J.Worth.

Hello Everyone, We are having a very strange issue regarding printers:... We currently use a WSF script to map printers to clients. The problem is that on some clients the print spooler service will crash out and stop - the event log just says that the Print Spooler service terminated unexpectedly. This issue appears to be random as it seems to affect some computers and not others and some users. Every user has a mandatory profile specified so I don't think it is a profile issue. We have tried changing from a script method of mapping printers to using the Group Policy Preferences (Server 2008 R2) printer connections but this has not helped. We use McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i for anti-virus - is there anyway that this could be affecting the mapping of the printers? Thanks in advance! J.Worth.

Hello Everyone, We are wanting to deploy RemoteApp and RDWeb to allow staff to access SIMS.net remotely. What is the best way of setting this up? I was thinking that we should have one server hosting RD Web Access and RD Gateway (this will be internet facing). We then have another server that will be the session host server for the RemoteApps. Additionally, where should I install the Certificate Authority? When we were doing a test setup, there was an error launching the RemoteApps because the Certificate Revocation List could be found. How do we solve this issue? Lastly, how can we get Single Sign On (SSO) to work properly because we were finding that when logging into RDWeb we then had to enter our username and password again when launching an initial RemoteApp (after this happens subsequent RemoteApps launch without a password prompt)?

[sims] SIMS Server Upgrade - Server 2008 R2 and Database migration

Hello everyone, I was just wondering if it is possible for SIMS.net to run on Server 2008 R2 as we need to upgrade our current SIMS box from Server 2003 R2 Standard due to needing more than 4GB RAM in order to effectively run SIMS Discover. Our local authority have recommended Server 2008 Enterprise x86 but I would like to get the SIMS server onto Server 2008 R2 is possible. What is the best/easiest way to move the SIMS database over from the old server to the new server? Thanks. J. Worth. -
Hello, We currently have a LANID Environment Variable on each workstation where SIMS.net client is installed. However, I have heard rumours about it not being needed anymore. Please can you tell me if this is true and how I can check to make sure that it is no longer required before I stop assigning it. Thanks. J.Worth. Hello everyone, I have two file servers and I use Roaming Profiles and have redirected Application Data and Desktop to shares on the server. I am looking at using DFS-R so that I can replicate these Roaming Profiles and Redirected Folders between the two servers. I have implemented DFS using an Active/Passive approach whereby clients always use the targets that point to File-Server1 and then should that server be unavailable they point to the file-server2. My question is: How can I increase the speed of failover for DFS, for example should file-server1 be unavailable there is a as little delay as possible for clients switching over to file-server2. (The two file servers are also the domain controllers for the network, with file-server1 holding all of the FSMO roles and both servers being a global catalog.) Is there anyway of using DFS-R to replicate the exchange mailstore databases. I am not bothered about having any fault tolerance regarding the running of exchange itself, but I would like to replicate the mailstore to another server for redundancy. Thanks again! Jonathan.

Hi, I have finally solved the issue after doing some more research - The quotas are auto applying but it has something do with the SMB 1.0 protocol in server 2003 r2 not being able to show the used/free space when using the auto-apply quota option. Thanks for all your help!

Hello everyone, I have another issue as well as the issue with setting the quotas.... How can I enable the Windows Firewall and set exceptions to allow DFS Replication communication to take place? I have no ISA server on the network, only a router between the servers and the internet and I am very wary about disabling the Windows Firewall on each of the servers Thanks again for the help in advance, Jonathan Worth.

To further add to reply above: If I map to \\Server-01\%USERNAME% or \\DOMAIN\DATA\%USERNAME% the quota is applied. However, if I map to \\Server-01\Users\%USERNAME% or \\DOMAIN\DATA\Users\%USERNAME% the quota is not applied. Like above the folder structure on the file servers is: D:\Users\%USERNAME% with D:\Users shared on Server-01 : C:\Users\%USERNAME% with D:\Users shared on Server-02 Folder targets have been added to DFS for the above shares and replication added which is working properly - just the quotas that wont't work! Thanks again.

Thanks for your quick response. I have set the option to apply the quotas to the subfolders as well as create a quota template and auto apply that on the replication partner. My setup is a follows: Server-01: Users Home Directories local path: D:\Users\%USERNAME% Users Home Directories shared path: \\Server-01\Users\%USERNAME% Server-02: Users Home Directories local path: C:\Users\%USERNAME% Users Home Directories shared path: \\Server-02\Users\%USERNAME% DFS: Namespace: \\DOMAIN\DATA Folder: Users Path: \\DOMAIN\DATA\USERS\%USERNAME% I still cannot work out what is going on with this and why it is not working the way that I want it to! Hello everyone, I have an interesting issue that I cannot work out for the life of me! I have the following folder setup on one of my file servers for user's home drives: \\SERVER-01\Users\%USERNAME% I have also got DFS replication between this file server and another for these home drives with the following path: \\DOMAIN\Data\Users\%USERNAME% My problem is that if I setup an auto apply quota on the parent folder for the home drives (Users), the quota does not get applied to each of the folders. This happens when both mapping to \\SERVER-01\Users\%USERNAME% as well as mapping to \\DOMAIN\Data\Users\%USERNAME% I have other shares that I replicate using DFS and they have quotas such as: \\SERVER-01\Apps - \\DOMAIN\Data\Apps and the quota for this share is working as it should.
