Snow Spotters 2018

Needing to be in Birmingham tomorrow lunchtime, we decided to go up this afternoon in the hope of avoiding the worst of the weather. All OK until we got to Oxford and then painfully slow with no gritters in sight the entire trip. We have made it and can stay as long as we want fortunately! The car can turn into a snowdrift.

Another snow day tomorrow, it's currently snowing harder than it has all day and the roads are awful.

Whilst I enjoyed the day, it all went to hell later. Firstly the daughters boyfriend had to abandon his car (rear wheel drive BMW) and walk half a mile home. Daughter and mrwITch took hours to get home and then the boiler started making very odd noises.

Turns out it was a frozen condensation pipe - but of course ours goes into a much longer pipe that runs for about 10 feet outside. Cue lots of kettles of hot water - got it sorted for now but it might freeze again.

 

We seem to have some freezing rain now so i am not sure what will happen next, weatherwise.

School shut tomorrow (not that I work Fridays) and I am unable to go and visit my sister - she lives fairly near where those people are stuck on the A31.

All our schools were closed today and are closed tomorrow.

I don't plan on going out, not worth the hassle.

We haven't been told that we are closed today. I am just about to set off.

Edit: I made it in and the Head has confirmed that school is open. Now we'll have to see if it's an early closure, as heavy snow is forecast for early afternoon.

No snow here, but we've had very strong winds for over 24 hours now and two more of my fence panels are in neighbors gardens (or they may be their panels, hard to tell!).

This happened yesterday too with different panels. Will have to wait until the wind drops to put them back in or else we'd end up in Blackpool!

We've not had a lot of snow since Wednesday night but we're on the third day of school closures because none of the large amount we had on Wednesday has melted. We've yet to see temperatures higher than -1. Between that and the wind blowing snow onto all the main roads in and out of town, we're sort of just stuck here.

We are open this morning but apparently only about 50% of kids made it, and about the same staff. Makes no difference to me as this is the third day I have been unable to get further than the driveway. Last night was I think the worst weather I have ever experienced - bitterly cold and snow swirling everywhere - its the wind which makes the conditions really bad - apprarently it was 100mph plus on the M62 where all the cars are stuck, which is not far from me. I feel really sorry for anyone that has had to be out in it for whatever reason. Fortunately seems to be moderating a bit now. Actually getting a lot of work done remotely, which is making me wonder how much I could actually work from home in normal conditions. (Except for the biscuits: at work they have biscuits - I've run out, and may be forced to eat the oatcakes in the back of the cupboard).

I suspect many will spend the weekend surveying the damage after the storm passes.

They also say it is supposed to have dropped again by now, again, it's still as strong as ever.

I can hear my aerial up on the roof squeaking in the wind, and am rather glad its still up there!

It's been awful in preston these last two days. Snow would've been a welcome relief.

 

My car port is not essentially a skeleton, having lost all of the corrugated clear plastic edging that kept the rain out but let light in.

I had to remove the last three panels by hand last night as they were tearing away and likely to smash against neighbours car / house!

In SE London, two of the three schools in my MAT are closed. The one closest to central London is open, the ones in Kent aren't.

Snow is now covered in a thick layer of ice so travel is even worse than it was yesterday. Daughter and boyfriend (who currently lives here) both at home as is mrwITch. The latter is supposed to be working remotely but I see little evidence of it at the moment!

When the weather improves, get these changed - there is no need whatsoever to run them outside, so get them piped into the main waste if at all possible. Did this on my old house that had major issues, and done it on my new one too.

 

Anyway, the snow here has hit the 7ft mark in drifts. Awesome stuff, and beautiful. No chance of traffic through here!

Yeah, you'd think this would work wouldnt you - ours was piped inside to the waste pipe for the washing machine, which then goes outside and runs along a wall to the nearest drain (about 10ft). The whole pipe - your normal plastic waste pipe - froze solid yesterday!

 

There is no drain anywhere nearer to the boiler so not sure what to do about it

Any way of routing it internally by gravity? Doesn't need to be near, just needs enough drop and a possible route around walls. You can also fit a condensate pump. It's a shame so many installers did this externally - how many did it properly with a lime filled soakaway is another matter!

Snow melting here in South Yorkshire. We are due a fair bit overnight this weekend probably though. The wind chill must be -10. But I’m going to clear a path for guests coming around tonight - and the Indian restaurant delivery man!

Had a huge amount of snow yesterday, bringing everything to a standstill. Then an ice storm overnight leaving about 1cm of ice on top of the snow, now it's snowing heavy again, Snow Cake anyone?
