Neither is it that ununsual. Connect an HP or Samsung printer to your computer, for example, or a Logitech device and you get nagged to install the app. It's scummy behaviour, one way or the other. I don't want you to think I'm condoning it

I'm not entirely convinced that that's worth the money. Terriestrial broadcasting is getting to the end of its life in 2034 and the Astra satellites that are used for Freesat and Sky are being wound down within the next three or four years. At this point I wouldn't buy anything which relys on them.

Let's caveat that just quickly. As well as operating system support, this will also need hardware support on the side of the ChromeBook. Not all USB-C Ports are created equally. The USB-C port on the Chromebook will need to support USB-C Alt Mode so it can carry DisplayPort or HDMI signals to the dock. I'm willing to bet DisplayLink support on a Chromebook is non-existent so alt mode is a necessity.

This where I feel it gets a bit messy. I have no objection to buying my kid equipment he needs for his schoolwork, but if I'm buying and I'm owning it, why is it being managed by a government institution and why is the goverment institution telling us what can and can't be done with it when it's not on government property? If the device was government property I wouldn't have an issue with that but as soon as personal money comes into play, it gets a lot murkier.

I think the phrase "Stay in your lane" applies here. I would expect that person would be a bit annoyed if a dev started taking over her job. The same applies here, especially if she doesn't know what the code is actually doing. We use Claude in my company. I particularly use it to help me with coding PowerShell scripts in regards to Intune and MECM stuff. However, I wouldn't dream of using it to create a SharePoint app because that's not my area of responsibility. Claude Code is great, but in my opinion you should still have at least a basic knowledge of the language you're coding in before you start pushing stuff into production, especially if it's asking for permissions like that.

Education IT is undeniably an underfunded sector, but that only gets you so much latitude. Even if it is underfunded, you should know enough to never put a secure credential in a place where anyone can get it.

I’ve just finished watching Pluribus on Apple TV. I’m a bit late to the party, but never mind. This is the new thing from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan. It’s pretty high concept and it’s by no means packed with action, but for the most part I think this worked really well. It’s slow but it’s never boring, at least in my opinion. Performances all around were perfect, especially Rhee Seehorn. I hope Apple renews it for another season or four.

I used to use a 3 femotocell back when I had a phone which didn't support wifi calling and I lived in a area which seemed to be the black hole of Calcutta in terms of signal. It worked quite well, but I don't think any networks are offering them any more because wifi calling has basically made them obsolete. I don't think they'd be any good for OP's use case as they're network specific and the one I used needed a whitelist for connected devices too.

It's admittedly been a long time since I've had to call on Smoothwall support (4+ years!) but back then, I generally found with them that getting past L1 could be a challenge but once you got to one of their engineers, they were absolutely superb. There was one problem where we had an Intel 10GBe NIC installed in the server was causing a kernel panic. The problem turned out to be a faulty Intel driver. The engineer sent me a patch with the new driver and it got resolved properly in the subsequent build. They were also very quick to answer queries about filtering and lists; if I had an issue with an incorrect block, that got sorted very quickly.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, I want to see the story finish, but Gaiman has turned out to be the scummiest of the scumbags out there and I hate to think that he's going to get anything from this.

I absolutely expect that there are some annoyed and upset people with this change, but I also expect that the number they're talking about is tiny compared to the number of people using supported devices and that the press are doing thier usual "blowing things out of proportion" thing

This is what Delivery Optimization is for. It creates a cache of downloaded content from the cloud on a local PC. The other PCs on your network poll the other computers to see if they have the content before they go to the cloud. The downside is that you need to have space on the computers for this to work. If you've got a suite full of 120GB or 240GB SSDs, then you're boned.

Benchmarks are saying that the A18 Pro is roughly on par with the M3 in terms of single threaded performance and on a par with the M1 with multithreading. Plus, the M Series of CPUs were derivitives of the A-series ones, while Atom was a clean room design. You can't really compare the two. The laptop obviously isn't going to compete with a MacBook Pro, but I think the CPU is going to be the least of its problems. I suspect the RAM, despite optimisations in macOS, is going to be the limiting factor.
