At that kind of height, it should be a scaffold tower or scissor lift - especially if you're rigging lights, as you will need to use both hands when lifting them and a stepladder would be unsafe. A full risk assessment has to be done before working at height. At my last school we had a scaffold tower, used for exactly this kind of thing. A 12 rung stepladder barely reached the projector hanging from the lighting rail, just enough to adjust the alignment/replace cabling.

IT skills should be part of continuing professional development - not just "here's how to use #system" and then never updated. Cover it in inset days at least once per year.

Our "Derek"s were two PCs owned by the Learning Support department. Still running Windows XP long after it went out of support, so they were taken off network. Purely because it ran one piece of software they used all the time - which was no longer available and certainly wouldn't run on a newer system (it barely ran on XP!) but they couldn't find an alternative system. Still going, somehow, when I left in 2021...

Funny that, the person I was talking about was a PE teacher too...

Just sat and read both books. I'm sure everyone here will find several points where they just nod and go "Yes, know that teacher". We've all encountered a printer like Hal, who'll only work when they want to. Offices in cupboards or - in my case - 8 years working in a corridor between the Art and DT classes. The receptionists who really run the school, the caretaker always conveniently absent "looking at the boilers", the new Head with ideas reaching far beyond practicality and budgets! So many laughs, and a few tears remembering former colleagues. Thanks so much for writing them, can't wait for the next one!

The school I left four years ago was just about to implement a 1:1 scheme. They bought cheap laptops, which broke easily (even without "encouragement" from pupils) and they ended up having to have so many spare devices it was ridiculous. Questions on ownership, storage/charging, responsibility for damage/spares, etc. were still unanswered when I left, I assume at least some of these were resolved before implementation - then again, SLT probably pressed on blindly without condiering the consequences...

Long shot, but does anyone out there have use for Snom handsets? We have around 70 - mostly 710 or D710/712 - and they'll be going to WEEE waste unless somebody wants them. Would be collection from Milton Keynes area, as there's three boxes of them plus another box of power supplies and desk stands.

Final Broadcast (2026) - on Prime A nuclear apocalypse is coming, and the last few hours are shown through an American TV news show. Imagine "This Morning" covering the end of the world, with a countdown clock on screen all the time. Very strange premise, as the government announced the war would begin ten years ago - for no apparent reason. TV coverage includes weather, cookery and some irritatingly chipper presenters on a discussion panel. I really enjoy apocalypse films - Threads is an all-time favourite - but this is a very different approach. Worth a watch.

The suggestion in the article about looking in Settings - System doesnt appear for me, so the only solution is to mess around with Chrome flags that don't make it clear whether this is the setting you need or not. It's saves (on WIndows) in C - Users - @username - AppData - Local - Google - Chrome - User Data - OptGuideOnDeviceModel, so every user gets 4GB of data.

Which is fine, if (a) you are told about it, (b) have an easy way to turn it off and (c) aren't using devices which multiple users log on to, and have limited storage space available.
