I do this as well, you sometimes have to install the dependency's as well but it just seems simpler to me than fighting the webfilter.

We did the core switching two years ago with Net-Ctrl who I would recommend, the plan was for them to also do the edge switches, wireless and fiber back bone but because we had to delay the project due to Covid we had to get new quotes and we chose to go with X Tech who are in the process of doing these upgrades and I would also recommend. Both companies have been very helpful, on budget, on time and provided a high quality of work. We originally planned to do these upgrades over three years but after Covid caused the core switch install to be difficult and the ongoing supply issues we had to postpone the switches and fiber last year and are now doing everything this year. If I could do this again I would try to do it all in one go, we had split it for financial reasons but I am finding the logistics easier with a one year process.

I would suggest you get an AV contractor in to do a quote, they will know the kit and the best questions to ask about usage. You will then have a better idea of what you want even if you go for a self install inthe end.

Just want to say thank you, I have just finished testing our laptops for exams and this software is a joy to set up and use.

We moved to 256GB for our staff laptops and all desktops about 18 months ago and it is better but our student laptops are Stone Cloudbooks with 64GB disks this is restrictive and requires regular Delprofing I don't think we will be able to use disks this small for much longer. As for the condition of the devices it varies, the Library and Science do best but they have dedicated staff to issue equipment and check it on return so you would expect this. I am lucky that my Business manager supports me in charging departments who have kit damaged when it is in their custody so the teachers at least have some skin in the game.

We used Spiceworks until recently and then moved to SupportPal mainly so we could bring in other departments which is working well

When I implemented iPads and Airserver at a school we had the Airservers in a staff VLAN and the iPads in a Wireless VLAN to overcome Bonjour's VLAN limitations we looked at a number of solutions, the solution we came up with was to use a Bonjour gateway service on our Wireless network. This was simple to set up and just worked the only other thing is as @Steve21 says the list of devices to connect to can become long however we just clearly named them and the staff where fine but I suspect mile could vary on this.

Many years ago I worked at a school that used iPod touches for PE to do registers, they were rubbish for most things due to the small screen but could pull up a register and then go in a pocket which the PE staff loved, all the real work was done on a PC in the office.

Dave I work at a 1500 pupil secondary so this is a different scale but with our registers and email in the cloud do you think a 4G back up would cut it?

The problem is that if you have a 1Gbs line you don't have many options for a back up, and if you have two fibre connections they are probably using the same infrastructure.

In our school we have 1500 students who all start with a 1GB storage quota which we increase on receipt of a "reasonable request" 250 (150 T&L) staff without a quota and department storage currently without a quota but I am trying to get set to 125% of their current capacity and increasable on receipt of a "reasonable request" we also market the use of OneDrive but any usage is voluntary. We have two Volumes on our SAN of 2.4TB and 11.5TB these are used to host 4TBs of general servers and etc. the fileservers storage included are 7.5TB which as about 60% used (if only I get the usage to level out across the servers). We have files that have not been accessed for over five years and when I investigated one that had not been accessed in the last two academic years Excel could not open the CSV because it was too big! However storage is cheap and expanding a RAID is less painful than suggesting we prune our data. The staff assure the DPO that the personal data is held in the correct silos and to be fair we haven't found anything when we do SARs.
