How many schools will still be using Server 2003 after the 14th July?

Hi!

 

After planning, meetings and red tape I almost got my order in for new servers and move to Server 2012 having been running 2K3 for 6 years.

 

Now it may not happen until next year and wondered what other schools will still be using Server 2003 (Domain controllers and file servers etc) I guess many but interested to find out.

i hope to phase mine out by then but i wouldn't worry too much just so long as it isn't a web server etc. (thinking along the lines of no security updates and outside access)

I have 1, it just sits there as a file server to hold old apps and archived content. If it dies it dies, not overly worried about it.

We have one storing none critical media files, videos and pictures mostly. It's going to be replaced just as soon as the budget permits it.

We have one sat there running some CCTV software. Nothing too important and will probably just replace it when it dies. The rest of the servers are on 2008/2012 anyway

We'll have a few. Web site - we're waiting on a new design, and have been so for 13 months, but nobody will make a decision. Our finance system - waiting on the suppliers to certify that it will work on newer release. Ditto for part of the MIS system.

Ours is a physical server that's only running DHCP and DNS, it's being replaced with a VM during the easter break.

Few servers will be left for a while, slowly moving services to 2012R2 where software allows.

Our 2003 is our DC but its getting migrated to 2012 in the summer holidays.

2008 R2 is our oldest server OS, with majority of 12 out of 17 servers on 2012 R2

Phased out the last of our 2003 server a couple of years ago when we upgraded to 2012 R2. Oldest we have is Server 2008 and that is only because we have a couple of pieces of software that wont run on a 64bit OS. Both of which are being phased out over the summer so we hope to have everything Server 2012 R2 by September.

We have six still in service: 2 DCs, 1 SuccessMaker, 1 ESET, 1 Net2 for door control, and 1 IIS for SSPR.

 

All six will be scrapped (along with everything else) come the end of the summer term, when the school closes.

I have an old one running a few odd apps. It is leaving me at Easter and my 2008R2 is being upgraded to 2012R2

We have one old box just serving a few printers. I suspect it will stay for the foreseeable future.

I have a print server on 2003 which won't be upgraded until next year when our copier lease expires and we decide on new print management software. I also have another server that runs our cashless catering and biostore software. If I have any money I will try and get that upgraded this summer.

None for me, it offends me that I still have to have two servers running 2008 R2 and one running 2012 One print server (account management software won't run on 2012/R2, one RemoteApp server where I am refusing to buy some more up to date CALs). The 2012 server is an Exchange box, who's days on this planet are numbered with Office365 as free as it is.

 

I just want a Hyper-V cluster full of GUI-less Gen 2 2012 R2 and Ubuntu Server 14.04 machines

 

I took great joy in P2V'ing and then killing off the only 2003 machine when I started at this place, all it was doing was hosting Sophos Enterprise Console (urgh)... it was a Poweredge 1800 with 3 SCSI disks in it!

Do they measure your school in KMs?

All gone here. Our 5 physical server boxes are all 2012, and all 25 of our virtual machines are running 2008 R2, 2012, 2012 R2 or Linux.

 

We basically decided to go "clean slate" when we moved to Windows 7 - anything incompatible was scrapped or replaced.

We recently archived the VM of our last one, which ran Successmaker but has been turned off since last Summer. Got a few 2008 R1 and R2 still in place, and one 2012 R1. Have stripped all of the updates for 2003 from WSUS to save space now.

Trying to get rid of them at the moment but one will have to remain because of the printers unfortunately...

I will be getting rid of my final 2003 server in May (Whitsun half term). Thank God. Mainly because it has one dead PSU so may well keel over at any point!

In the process of decommissioning our 2003 server having gone over to Virtualization. It will go after half term.
