Cillian Murphy and Sam Neil are incredibly versatile with their vocal abilities. Sam Neil did an Australian accent and natives thought he was native. Mind you, considering he was born in Northern Ireland, lived in New Zealand and America, doesn't surprise me with his versatility. And same for Cillian Murphy and his American accent for the Dark Knight Trilogy, people thought he was American and not Irish. Edited September 2, 2019 by featured_spectre

But lots of Americans were surprised to find out that Hugh Laurie was a Limey when he was in House. I thought his accent was a bit shonky in the few eps I watched.

I watched the first episode and seems pretty good so far. Though it may just be tapping into my nostalgia from the movie.

I thought Discovery was Genuinely excellent! Best trek in years.

 

As for B5. It might look a little dated vfx-wise, but it still stands up as an exceptional show all these years later!

 

I just diddnt get on with discovery at all it jsut seemed to me like someone had watched battlestar galactica and had tried to copy and paste that moral greyness on a star trek ship. it diddnt even feel like trek to me

biggest issue with b5 is the video quality its sd and looks it the vfx isnt bad. Some of the changes to make it 16:9 are bad so losing the top of people heads on shots, shots that look "fat"

This bit is surprising. They actually shot the whole of B5 in 16:9 in preparation for future widescreen TVs and then cropped to 4:3 for broadcast.

The DVDs and all subsequent releases were the original footage & not the cropped broadcast videos.

We are shooting in 16:9 aspect ratio, cutting it down to normal TV aspect

ratio for its initial broadcasts. When a) the laserdisks are in time

released, and b) when HDTV becomes more of a standard, the full letterboxed

aspect ratio will be available.

Problem is Warner Bros didn't ask for the CGI in 16:9, nor did they keep the CGI files, they all got lost. The Straight to DVD episodes used fan models.

 

So they had to upsale the 4:3 back to 16:9, and it was even worse, because of interlacing.

 

There's a film copy in 4:3 that's high res, but no one's bothered to scan it, basically current WB people hate the WB people who did PTEN and won't lift a finger to help their shows.

 

There's no HD ds9 either, Blurays of TNG didn't sell enough to make it worth it.

I've been watching it. I like it but it's bleak and something of social commentary of our times.

 

It's setting is fantasy dickensian steampunk

B5 was produced on super 35mm film, not digitally. The current DVDs are the result of the NTSC copies being transferred to PAL, resized and cropped, then BACK to NTSC again before doing the DVDs with the same files, acquiring all kinds of artifacting and blurriness along the way.

I first saw B5 when I was first out - I was addicted from the start

 

the way the enemy was slowly brought forward over many episodes always there but not seen - then seen - or was it - then seen in the shadows

Brilliant

 

all the time with normal human (etc) stories washing around and playing out - and characters developing and changing over time

 

and special effects such as spacecraft beyond anything I had seen before

 

I saw an article explaining how travel in space works - space shuttle, satellites etc etc - they pointed to B5 as being the only Sci-Fi that properly showed how spacecraft move

 

the moving of the fighters from B5 were the best example

 

 

Many years later I got the set of DVDs and binge watched it over a long weekend - wonderful weekend!

Watched the first eps of both the two big new streamers.

 

Dark Crystal: Although I saw the movie on release and possibly a couple of times n VHS, I've never liked it enough to buy it, and the new series so far has yet to change my mind. It looks great, and there's some lovely design work, but it didn't enthral me. Also, at the risk of sounding racist, it was hard to tell the young lady Gelflings apart. Mlle LeMarchand thought the one who seemed to think she was in a remake of Meet the Feebles and wanted to get kissy with her boyf in the castle was the same as the one whose sister was at the tithing ceremony. TBH, if the ladies of the house didn't want to watch any more, I'd be happy to ditch it. Not awful, but there's stuff that I'd rather watch in it's stead.

 

Fortunately, everyone else also loved Carnival Row. This really is like China Mieville's Bas-Lag novels, but with fairies etc instead of the bizarre creatures of Bas-Lag. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

There were sorta-puppets in Carnival Row ep 2 (they were actually Kobolds acting like puppets). Ep 2 as intriguing as the first.

Excited for the next series after 10.

 

Also by 10 I realized how disconcerting lack of facial expressions is. Which incidentally, there's a chapter in Malcolm Gladwell's new book about facial expressions.
