3s-gtech Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 I'd also recommend looking at your alcohol consumption, if you drink. This can have a big impact on calorie consumption but also on your general energy levels and motivation. Even more the case if you like wine and beer! I'm finding the current trends towards hits of high intensity work, where you're getting out of breath and working hard, are looking like having the greatest effects compared to time spent. Yeah, going on a 1 hour run is great, but 30 minutes of HIIT can have a long lasting impact. Remember that the obsession with steps is also a bit of a gimmick - walking is certainly good for you, but it won't transform you on its own - you need to have to work (e.g. walking up hills, walking with bursts of running, going up and down stairs etc). Of course, start gently and build up - and find something that you enjoy! 1
hardtailstar Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 thanks ill give those a try. Not a problem, Get yourself a training buddy too if you can, that way you can motivate each other too. Also check in here too. 1
Mewdewgooboofoo Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 You'd really benefit from finding a sport/exercise you enjoy and get into. If you hate running on a treadmill in the gym, don't make that your main source of exercise as you'd likely just give up after a while as you don't enjoy it! Try out different sports and activities too see what takes your fancy. Try weightlifting/Olympic lifting, swimming or try martial arts/boxing, 5 a side footall etc. When you really enjoy a sport the weight just falls off when matched with a balanced diet, and a not a restrictive diet. I don't mean to state the obvious, but sometimes people get caught up with thinking exercise is just treadmill or rowing machine etc, but it doesn't have to be if it's not for you. Diet can be simple when mixed with a good exercise life style, lower your sugar intake, increase vegetable intake and generally stay away from processed foods, unless it's a treat once or twice a week. i think ill try getting back in to boxing, i think just to start me off ill go to the gym as well to get in to the habit of exercising
eyetea Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 I found it a huge help to find people to do stuff with - climbing with my 2 best friends is great. I run with a few friends who I was initially scared to ask as they've done marathons (one's done an iron man!) but they've been brilliant and are happy to run at my pace and push me that bit further than I did with just myself. Swimming was good once I got into it once a week, took a little bit of time to over come self confidence with it (often try to run in the dark for this reason too!). Whatever the activity, when you've said to a friend yeah I'll do this with you it's then a lot harder to just think "nah, I'll do this another night" as someone else is relying on you! 1

hardtailstar Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 Also cut out fizzy drinks etc and drink plenty of water. Ive not had a fizzy drink this year and drunk mostly water. My skin is so much better for it too. 1
strawberry Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 Key thing is to get to the gym. Once you've started going then work out whats good for you. Find out about HR zones, get a fitbit to monitor HR and track progress. Buy Aria scales so you have a decent record of weight loss / lean mass. Get your mp3's sorted or find a decent podcast. Then join a class, spin, boxercise, fight klub. They are all much more efficient than plodding on a treadmill. For diet, lots of meat and Veg. Cut out excessive sugar and plan your meals. 1
bashy Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 I have lost 36 Kg in the last year. Been as most people have said eat well drink less alcohol and less sugar drinks and do more exercise. 1

garethEds Posted March 6, 2018 Posted March 6, 2018 I hope this is okay to share! (mods: understand if it's not). I've started a fitness clothing brand: www.never-compromise.com Work in progress as need to re-do some photos for the site etc but going surprisingly well so far It's all either screen printed or vinyl heat-pressed by hand by me. I've spent most my time trying different manufacturers stuff trying to find the right gear etc (including the ladies leggings lol!) There's a 10% discount code if you sign up to the newsletter or you can use the code EDUGEEK for free shipping (whichever works out cheapest ) Hi @MrMat - stuff looks amazing. Well done. Gareth 1

Joanne Posted March 6, 2018 Posted March 6, 2018 Oh - I wonder if they have any left. I need some more weights and have thought about kettlebells too Worth a look. They were only £7 each and they are good ones too! 1
witch Posted March 20, 2018 Posted March 20, 2018 I've just entered the Muddy 5K for cancer. ARggggghhhhhh 2
unixman_again Posted March 20, 2018 Posted March 20, 2018 Oh - I wonder if they have any left. I need some more weights and have thought about kettlebells too Abandon weights and try Kin Shi-Hai Do - you have to be disciplined to get benefits. Alternatively, try The 15 Minute Equipment-Free Muscle-Building Workout - I do bits of it in addition to my weight training, which is pretty much all body weight. I love my dips and pull-ups.

I use the website fitnessblender.com for a range of workouts from cardio to strength training
HarryMonkey Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 Bike rental schemes have been springing up all over (Boris Bikes etc.). China seems to have gone a bit OTT though ... https://www.theatlantic.com/photo/2018/03/bike-share-oversupply-in-china-huge-piles-of-abandoned-and-broken-bicycles/556268/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=atlantic-photo-newsletter&utm_content=20180322&silverid=NDQzNTY4OTI2MTE3S0
pooley Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 And my LA want me to recycle 80% of everything and CHINA is full of bikes just rotting away.
TTG_Alice Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Has anyone done the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge? If so how difficult is it?
Domo Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 Well this thread hasn't had any updates in like 4 months so here goes Started back at the gym after two months of being lazy... went on wednesday last week did some cardio which i assumed i'd struggle with after this long but it wasn't too bad, also did some arms training so only pain in my arms still! Then went on saturday, did more cardio which felt very easy, did 2km on the treadmill and felt relitively good about that. Also did legs, and now i can't walk properly. fun times.
witch Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 Beginning of week 3 of my "Burn" 4 week challenge. Upper body, Lower body, Core, Cardio, HIIT, the lot Such fun, especially in this weather 1
CookieMonsterjb Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 Need to get out on my bike more and make the most of this nice weather
hardtailstar Posted September 18, 2018 Posted September 18, 2018 Started on Sunday my 30 days of fitness challenge. Doing at least half an hour of exercise a day for 30 Days. Sunday was a 32ish minute walk/run Monday was 36 minute walk/bit more running. Tonight im aiming for the gym but also going Climbing. I challenged a friend who was also trying to lose weight to lose a stone by end of October so hopefully this helps. 2
witch Posted September 19, 2018 Posted September 19, 2018 Moved on from my burn challenge. Now doing a maintenance program - three times a week a combo of legs, arms, weights, HIIT, cardio and core. Alongside my cardio class and core class, and walking the dog, this should be enough
Davit2005 Posted September 19, 2018 Posted September 19, 2018 (edited) I'm slowly returning to running after minor heart proceedure in March. As soon as the consultant said I could start running about 4 weeks post proceedure I started on couch to 5k, then 5k to 10k programme. Now alternating longer easy runs with faster short and longer runs. It was a bit disappointing after being able to to do weekly half marathons and up to 20mile runs without stops and reasonable pace of approx 8:30min/mile pre-proceedure. I was prob overdoing it though and not thinking about recovery :-( , I'm taking it a bit easier now, jus enjoying the running and not competing with myself too much :-) . Done the Thames River relay a few weeks back which was good fun and not like anything I have done before. Edited September 19, 2018 by Davit2005
