ok... So this is embarrassing as I can't do this most basic task... folder in mapped drive available to all staff, I've remove inherited perm and explicitly set a new security group for just science teachers. it doesn't work???! The teachers are in the security group (sci folder) the sci folder security group is in the ACL for the folder (all but full perms)... I have no deny perms, effective perm tell me that any teacher I select has the correct perms for any file or folder within the folder.... they keep getting access denied? errrr.. what am I missing?

I just made an inquiry about renewing our NOD32 that expires in April 2016 and have been told that it won't be offered this time around to schools without county support. This is going to be a big pain if like me you purchased your nod32 through Dorset County Council in April! Last time I looked for an independent quote (for Nod32) it was £9 per PC (for 3 years)

I find that the usb to serial adaptors, although work, have an inherent latency which makes the old serial boards feel laggy. I always fit a native serial port to my workstations (or get a PC with one on it) I also use the 5.7.22 software as it seems the best. something like this: Startech 1 Port 16550 Serial PCI Card - Ebuyer if your using laptops then try not to use the usb3.0 ports as I find they don't like slow old devices like a usb serial adaptor.

The staff want to introduce python programming into the school. I was wondering how this can be done safely. My concern is that a pupil will cut and paste malicious code into python make an exe and run it. Also a program that is easy to deploy would be nice

This is an issue for my Win8 Machines but the "Enhanced Protected Mode also limits the locations Internet Explorer can read from in the registry and the file system" this is probably why my favourites are no longer working... They show up but when you go to use them ie remains static! Does anyone know an acceptable location for re-directed favourites at the moment I just re-direct to the users area in a folder called favorites. (American spelling) I've disabled Enhanced mode for now but would like it left on..

I've added some macs to the domain and it lets pupils log in, now how do I map a drive for every AD user who uses the mac? The user can manually browse to the directory and use it just fine and I don't need the my docs redirect. (which it tries and fails but I don't need it) No mac server...Hope I don't need one. 3 yo macs I don't know which version of osx but we can't upgrade because of CS5.5 compatibility issues with the newer versions of osx.

I've noticed that my system seems too be slower than usual and the hosts are not too busy, I think it's the san as disk access isn't that high but the latency is high. The SAN is healthy so I must assume it's something else? is there a way of defragging a VM? Would I get the OS within the VM to defrag? (would that help?) should I have a maintenance schedule of sorts for my VM SAN environment? ESXi 5.5 on 2 ML530 gen 8 hosts using an iscsi P2000 SAN.

I've found the dedicated GPP IE Settings less reliable. I still use GPP but to make user registry settings as these work 100%! you need 3 regkeys 1 to "proxyenable" 2 to set the proxy "proxyserver" and 3 "proxyOverride" their should be a write up somewhere on doing this.

what happens when you ping your own ip address (not 127) then ping something on the same switch then things on other switches. EDIT: oh and ping the switch it's self and the gateway.

Going to have to bring back the old MAC filtering I've had similar issues with Win8.1 people with guest WiFi access on their Windows Phones are having the guest access WiFi on their school laptops causing me issues! (when they use their M$ accounts on their laptops (store etc))

OK, so I've been aware of the technology for a while but never thought I ever see because of it's draconian hardware limitations. Well, I finally have some laptops that meet the required hardware. My Elitebook 8460p with a Corei5 2nd gen with HD3000 GFX and a Centrino Ultimate n 6300 wifi card. Now all I need is a WiDi only client device (Gen1 not Gen 2 or pro) for £80 and I can wirelessly display and image! Phew... No, no you can't, early in the trouble shooting (around the, how do I WiDi? question) I saw fourms of people bemoaning their WiDi woes, and a theme came through the noise... (if it didn't come with the software, it won't work) Well I can say after 3 hours of drivers the auto install utility many driver versions and even installing windows 8.1 (mistake) it does not work.. I only once got it to see the adapter and attempt a connect only to fail and never connect again, and never displaying an image btw. Software the bails during the install to tell you that your platform is unsupported and where you can buy supported hardware (as it couldn't find a .dll) (my favouriteist) This has been a complete waste of time... And I'll say it for anyone "Unless the WiDi software is already installed on your device, it'll never work" AND never update your drivers or your operating system if you want to keep it that way. The magical WiDi updater tells me at one point to download a gfx driver (the driver, I get by hand, won't install as it can't work with 8.1!) MAGIC! What a mess.... I've wasted money and time and I can't bring myself to find the magical unicorn driver combo that'll allow me to use it.. UPDATE: and reading another forum I now find out I need to fudge older drivers to allow a connecting to the client to allow a firmware update for it to work on win8.1 but I've gotten no where near the point I can attempt a connection! HA!

Sorry for click bait title.. a total mistake, I promise this was just the way I felt after 20 minutes with this server, it's a cruddy old ML110 with a opteron quad @ 2.3Ghz with 512kb cache and 4gb of ddr2 ECC ram.. and it flies! I'm just like wow... BTW I was never worried about the M2 conversion, I'd heard they were super fast and I didn't get anymore technical than that... This thing shames my SATA based SSDs.

Thanks for that @bossman, it turns out tweaking my print spooler settings fixed the issue!? My exams officer was told by a 3rd party technical support that it was not supported and I needed Chrome so I didn't look further into troubleshooting! I should know better and start problem solving my self from the beginning...

OK, I always set aside a small budget for my skunk works or (let see what this is like) So I invested in the fastest HDD I could muster. I was going to build a super fast WSUS machine.. I purchased the Kingston Predator PCIe HyperX 240GB 1400MB/s read 600 Write. I plopped it into an old HP ML110 (So not PCIE2, so a hit on its top speed out the bat) I installed server 2012R2 (in like 15 minutes) already looking good... Anyhow it's the logon times that blew me away... I haven't run a speed test on this drive yet (I expect a penalty because of the bus type) but my crusty old login is just stunning... it's like looking a time lapse of a normal login all the same things happen but without any delay the whole PC runs like that... It is like no PC I've used before.... Anyhow early testing and just WOW... I may get one for my home PC... £200 for 240GB though! We use the Epson EB-575Wi interactive projectors. You can get them for £1000 they can be installed projecting onto a normal whiteboard (so the teacher can use the board without the projector with normal pens) Teachers like that option. Most of ours will go to 80" as the whiteboard dictates it's ultimate size. Although I question the value of an interactive screen at all. (Mostly power points that could be done with a £30 laser pointer and a clicker) We also have a 585 now and that will let you use the pens to change the input and power down the projector. The 595 (I don't have) is the finger touch version as mentioned above and is currently £1250 from Roche but they have a 65" interactive TV for £1700...

Without reading the whole thread, I agree that anyone shouldn't be required to submit a fingerprint, a pin number should be allowed as an alternate. Some people (in various trades) do not have usable fingerprints.

I have deployed throughout the school, (use the 2013 version if your PCs are not at least i5 w 4GB, 2014 is very hungry and will run terribly, I'd still recommend you use 2013) Anyhow setup a deployment share (about 2.3GB) and the licensing server (at the same time the MSI will look for the server) but I've never deployed it, I just used it as part of a thick image. There is a deployable version for education btw don't use the individual student version. The proper school version won't put the academic watermark over prints etc. And licenses from the server can be "borrowed" (the actual term) for offline PCs. (Teacher laptops) EDIT: btw you can configure the 32 bit and 64bit deployable on any workstation but you can only install the 32bit or 64bit version on the respective version of windows.
