    OMG, I'm a stickler for licensing except for the blooming adobe nonsense! I'll continue to include it in my fat images. I can't count how many times I've had to registry fix failed flash updates Now I can't just get the MSI and go URRRRAGH!

    Some AV programs (Like Nod32) can block usb drives and display that exact message. (Block removable media) in Advanced.

    I've run out of pupil licenses! HOW? I have 752 pupils (currently) and 815 licences for student proplus. Dirsync monitors only the pupils & teachers OU, so when my disabled pupils are moved outside of that OU (by me) effectively deleting them from O365... This happened months ago. (during new intake) so why am I licence short? Do I not get them back? I applied for new licences (to renew the 815) but I'm still short. I've searched to see if old pupils account are on O365 and they are not.... How do I approach this problem. The reports are of no help with this and I don't know why the azure things exists at all. I'd like a report just saying how many pupils I have. I've configured the search stuff but it too limited. (I bet I have to do it through PS

    too late now but 2 things I would have tried.. 1 ping google and use the returned ip address directly in one of your browsers. 2 turn off all hardware "enhancements" on the NIC (tcp offload etc) ((On cheap cards they're worse than not using them))

    I've just set it up and although it seems to work fine, I'm a little confused. So I've added the RM cert to the trusted root of every PC & I've redirected to the new "sslfilter.proxy.swgfl.org.uk:8080". Now when I go to a https site I was expecting to see an RM cert on the padlock. I don't though, it looks normal, the cert chain goes to godaddy or where ever. Am I wrong...

    DP use an external drive to store data through a mac share and the drive has stopped working... And it appears that super-duper stopped working last year but no-one had checked since then anyhow I can plug the raw drive into my PC and it installs and spins up but the drive is not initialized and says unallocated. (Is this normal behaviour for an HS+ drive on Windows 7?) I tried the drive on a different mac using our own sata to usb adaptor but the drive wouldn't (automount?) how should I proceed, I think the data is there but the partition info is fragged. (fix it on a mac or is there a PC way of fixing this? Can windows 7 read hs+? The mac server btw is old it's still IBM based big silver plastic one. with a speak visible on the front. Thanks mac guys

    Damn, after a week of blaming WDS for my woes it turns out it's the bleedin' VMware. I'm using my ESXi 5.0.0 update 1 and using a VM8 machine. I built a Windows 7 64bit PC. (ace as I can use snapshots etc.) I deliberately did NOT install the VMware drivers as I wanted the image clean. Anyhow it turns out that sysprep kills the image. After a reboot the PC then BSOD's so bad I can't get back into windows to even look at the minidump. I can't read the bsod as it flies past so quick.... Anyone run into this? Ideas? NO DO NOT MENTION MDT! (I looking now but it's involved and I've invested loads of time to this:)

    Argh! OK it seems that the old server can't capture an image without breaking it either? Maybe I can't use my VMware to build images? I am using a direct method now.. (I used to map a drive, now I just put in the UNC) I'll have to investigate more... but it's not 2012s fault... MDT isn't self explanatory, it seems far too complex for my needs. I do have it installed so I could fix 2012 boot images but that was a lot of command line... Really don't understand the terminology that MDT uses or why I need to do the 30 things required to make it work... Whining really but the barrier of entry is intimidatingly high. MDT also seems geared toward using system centre. WDS is just create, capture, deploy. nice.

    So many things just don't work on this, how can it be this broken? I'm reinstating my 2008 (not R2) WDS server as I type. OK 1: can't use any boot image made with wds 2012r2 it'll black screen on the client. (the FIX: mount, commit, dismount, manually) 2: captured images don't work! capture away, everything seems fine in fact make 2 or 3 spend a week making new images! Now find that when you deploy them they all BSOD! YAY! (images created in VMware without any drivers or tools, office and os sysprepped of course) 3: can install drivers based on various filters (wmi query model for me) (This works and is great, but I'm still mad) So that's it, if you want to use it to deploy stock windows (straight from disc) or images captured from your old system... Great. I am capturing for the first time 64bit clients but I don't know if that should cause these issues. (I've tried 64bit and 32 bit capture boot images) and 32bit / 64bit installers all fail... I'm going to triple check with my old WDS server to see if I forgotten how to WDS!> grumble....

    The 7" HDX is only £99 pounds at the moment, I don't want an Amazon device and a quick look tells me that they can be rooted. Is this a possible cheap alternative to a 2013 Nexus 7?

    Just wondering, I've been having trouble with the built in PDF reader in Windows (a Metro APP). I was wondering these must be updateable from WSUS as I don't allow my users to go to the store.... btw I can't make this app print all desktop programs print fine but the PDF reader app gets so far then says "failed to print" print prieview is fine options are fine, just fails)

    I was looking into getting 12 ipad minis and Itrack docs (as music have £4k to spend on It) ((I could get just 4 mac minis) I've not tried but if I buy software on a new iTunes account can I use it on 12 simultaneous ipads? I really don't want to manage the ipads just register them, install the software and never connect them to wifi again! ipad mini is £169 and an itrack is £140 so a cracking little package for £310 a pop, music already have midi keyboards, mics, guitars etc. but only 2 macs..

    Don't get me wrong I've know about the scheduler since XP but I didn't look at it again in Windows 7! It can now send emails... This is super cool because it can now also trigger upon events in the event log, this means you could get a workstation to email you when a disk event occurs. It can also start when a certain network is available, super useful if you have a program that doesn't deal well with being run before the network is established. Does anyone who realized this 4 years ago, have any cool tasks they deploy to workstations? I've had the same one for 8 years that turns off the PCs at 18:30 but that's it!

    +1 Unify, super cheap and no on going costs. Run the controller from one of your own servers. configure the network or networks, then adopt new APs, super easy. Not as full featured as Meraki but wayyy less money. I purchased the Ubiquity AC points but I'm thinking its wasted and I should have gone just gone Pro. However it was the difference between 3.8k (pro) and 5.6k (new AC) , for a medium sized school using 27APs it was still a tiny amount. Only downside is the controller software runs in Java and setting up the program to run as a service was fiddly but documented.

    You've disabled sleep/hibernation, is that automatic sleep (timeout), buttons/lid catch? Or can a user put the laptop to sleep. also is the scheduled task set to run as system? Is the task set to run if a user is logged in or not? I'd still set the task to wake up the PC to run the task. Wake up will only work if the laptop is in sleep. Have you run the task manually (just to make sure it works) in Windows 7/8 the schedule will have a last run result as well, (if it ever ran)

    De-dup is a little cooler than that, it looks at the block level (2012r2 has smaller blocks). So if you had 30 versions of a word document, 90% of all the documents are the same so it stores 1 version of that 90%. You shouldn't use this for your VDI solutions or any high frequency files. De-dupe is a per volume solution. But because de-dupe look at the block level encrypting or compressing the files will throw it off. Also if I were to backup my backup folder, it'd need a 7+TB volume as only the server is aware of the de-dupe. So if you made a folder share with 7tb of files but it only took 1Tb of space on the host the backup server wouldn't know and would pull 7TB. (I don't know if any backup solutions are de-dupe aware). I mention this in case you have the urge to offer up massive space to your users.

    I came across a blog thread that made total sense and I had to follow the premise.. It seems obvious but I'd not thought of it. I created a new 2012r2 server and created a dedupped volume in which to store my VM backups. The key is to not encrypt or COMPRESS the backups. This way dedupe can work with the blocks. Traditionally I'd use incremental backups with compression on a standard windows share. This yields a lot of storage but is pretty slow especially at restoring. The beauty of the dedupe is the speed. But it's getting way better results than I expected.. Screen shot! that's over 7TBs of backup in less than 1.. And its faster.. (De dupe operations run during the day.) So you do need initially more storage. still this is great.

    how about a 2nd user probook? I get them for work they're great. I can't vouch for the graphics but it's a 2nd gen i5 with 4gb RAM: HP Probook 6460b 2.5GHz 320GB 4GB They're scuffed and sometimes dented but 100% working. screen and keyboard will be fine. EDIT: oh it's £199 INC btw has HD3000 gfx and will boost to 3.2GHz. Also these models usually come with a 1600x900 screen.
