did someone run your system before you? they could have removed the .lnk file type from the executables list. but to your first point in a disallow by default it certainly stopped shortcuts. But are you talking about shortcuts or .ps1 files?

I'd get the cheaper unify kit, you can always upgrade high density areas later. but think of your clients how many today could even take advantage of wave2 AC wifi. Most of my clients top out at 450 anyway. None have 1700AC I can't see that happening for a few years anyway. in low density areas you'd never see a practical gain. Meraki is amazing but you pay for it, do you need your APs to have a built in spectrum analyser (sweet but OTT) Meraki were doing double licensing for education a while back and are always giving away free kit.

sure this is a pupil gpo, first the pupil SRP I set the default setting to "disallow" so no pupil can execute anything. I then added additional path rules to allow certain directories. The GPO will fill in 2 default directories so nothing will break, then add your own, I added the program files directories and our mapped Y drive for network programs. This seemed like a good solution as you need admin creds to place anything in the program files directory and our mapped drive is read only. Sure you can still smuggle an executable in but you can never run it. This was 99% perfect BUT I need the shortcut links to work in the taskbar on windows 8.1 (file explorer and ie) but these .lnk files can't be excluded using the path rules. I decided to exclude .lnk files from the executables list. This I had to do on both the user and the computer settings.

You can block locations at the computer and user level, with the shortcuts you must explicitly block both. But you should reverse the model and block all exe's and allow only the ones you want. (but perversely you'll want to exclude .lnk files) you'll find out why.

The controller runs in JAVA so it can run on Windows, mac or Linux. I'm using a windows server VM and run mine as a service. You can buy the cloud key or their cloud service. I liked the idea though of using my servers to run it. (so my backup etc.)

mapping a dvd drive with the film in it and streaming the data directly does not work maybe this is a case for the Windows Media Centre (the green button thing)

I've re-read your post and I see you have the ap-ac we have found that many of them are running very hot and sometimes fail to pass traffic even though they allow clients to connect. We've put holes in our ceiling tiles to allow air flow and on others just reduced their wi-fi power settings. next time its failing check how hot the back is.. on one of ours it was uncomfortable to hold!

it could be interference from a non-wifi device. security camera, dect phone, microwave, etc. Have you tried manually changing (forcing the wifi channel on the 2.4Ghz) Try ch1 then ch11. Unless you have a spectrum analyser. (I do!) Every now and again our science dept, turn on their birdbox and the 6th form can't use facebook! Can't be helped! EDIT: I see you set prefer 5Ghz but that 2.4 will always be stronger (regardless if it's trash) and some devices will still hop onto 2.4 then switch. EDIT2: I've also been very harsh and only allow clients to connect if they can't at least get 18Mbps connection. In the Wireless settings you can enforce 2g Data rate control. This stops weak clients who are too far away from diminishing the throughput.

if the dvd is copy protected copying the files will result in useless data. I was thinking that legally you could setup a PC with 4 or 6 dvd drives and offer them up as shared drives. Haven't tried this with copy protected films yet. I'll give this a shot later today.

a poor solution might be to connect the laptops via direct access and force web tunnelling through the school. Same access as on site.

+1 for the torch, I used this method to discover unlabelled ports. regular torch will do it or the phone led, it won't however tell you if the cable is damaged and refracting. have you tried a different pair on the same run?

format factory is free, you can set batch jobs and quality settings. it can also rip DVDs (not copy protected ones)

I've been running into this issue and can never get 100% success. I've triple mapped the printers using scripts (vba and ps1), gpo policy and preferences. I've now just had to add printer shortcuts into resources that will allow pupils to add a printer if it does not appear.

SCEP (typo) System Centre Endpoint Protection I was confused by the Defender ATP settings in SCCM. So, I just apply a SCEP profile to the Windows 10 clients and they'll obey them as the Windows 8 and 7 PCs will using SCEP? What is the "Windows Defender ATP Policies" Can I ignore it? My confusion is that it comes under the "endpoint protection" in assets and compliance. Should I just stick with the antimalware policies and the Windows 10 PCs will follow it. Thanks for the help..

I have just installed the SCCM 1702 and have the SCEP (endpoint protection) licences. I'm reading that I can't use SSEP with Windows 10 and am supposed to use "Windows Defender ATP" instead. The issue is that it would seem to be a different product that needs a different solution.... Am I expected to purchase 2 different AV solutions from Microsoft now? I'm currently running windows 8.1 but was hoping to go to 10.... Maybe I'll stick with Nod32 and cancel the SSEP deployment. EDIT: Corrected TYPO

I've just started an install of SCCM 2016 Current Branch and it insists that I have Software Assurance support? Do I? I have the EES desktop and server? I have some SA benefits but I'm not sure about SA for SCCM? I have Licencing for SCCM Standard Core 2016, Endpoint Protection 2012 and System Center Configuration Manager Client ML 1606 I think I'm only entitled to use the 1606 version.. OK, all the teacher laptops think they're not connected to the domain! The NLA places them in the guest or private network, as the firewall rules are pretty strict they can not connect to SMB shares or the internet! I've taken a few laptops and restarted the NLA service but it places the laptops back into guest. The laptops all have correct ip settings, can ping all servers (I left the ICMP thank goodness) The firewall settings haven't changed in over a month (according to the GPO) so I think a short powercut on Saturday has changed something about the network that confuses the NLA service... Servers and all wired machines fine, pupil laptops (with no public or private firewall settings configured as they don't go off site) correctly identify the network. (this maybe due to the firewall being able to remediate if at first it incorrectly identifies) I*n summary: Anyhow what do I need todo to get them to correctly identify the network? This happens to only teacher laptops that have restricted private and guest settings (in the firewall) on wired or wireless networking. The firewall settings haven't been altered recently. wih
