Server 2022 - NPS and Always-On VPN Caution
3s-gtech replied to CHiLL's topic in Windows Server 2022
It's going to be worth splitting NPS off - right PITA that'll be though. Certs wise - thinking from a server perspective, perhaps there'll be a requirement for a stronger encryption level set on the AoVPN certificate template. The clients won't be the variable, it's the NPS server I'm wondering about. -
Server 2022 - NPS and Always-On VPN Caution
3s-gtech replied to CHiLL's topic in Windows Server 2022
Eeeep. Our NPS is on a DC, which tend to get OS upgrades first. That can wait then! Have the certificate requirements beefed up with the OS upgrade? -
My experiences: Rows, all facing away from the teacher - disaster. Student productivity tends to be lower, you can't use the room for online exams, cramped, students can easily get to the back of each other's PC to pull the cables Perimeter - easier for teacher to monitor, cables are concealed, use of space inefficient, open and easier access, easy to build M or W (perimeter with a central column) - a hybrid layout - not bad to cable up, bit more cramped, very space efficient, harder for teacher to walk around, expensive desks down the middle Island - expensive desks and cabling, difficult to secure PCs (but not impossible), easy access, nice open space, usable for exams, pillars/cable channels may be impossible There's no right or wrong answer IMO (apart from rows, obviously) but it really depends on the room and use.

Cost of living crisis 2022 - what have you cut back on?
3s-gtech replied to Ditto's topic in General Chat
I live pretty cheaply anyway - heating is left on low, not much left running at any point, don’t spend much on food, don’t go the pub. My ability to save has been impacted though, and I don’t have much behind me as it is. Not too worried yet, but it shows where the threshold of affordability lies. I spend too much on cars, and I can easily save £75 a month there if I have to, cancelling insurance. -
Checkpoints on a DC were always a bit of a no-no - if you try to use them, and if you have other DCs, it all goes a bit mad. If you have Exchange, and possibly with AADC, it goes madder. You should be able to merge that checkpoint in. I'm not sure with the USB drive - I do similar but with iSCSI and the VM will boot.

There are a load of functions, like AD integrated mail group membership, that I have to manage on my local server. I guess user creation would be the same (I have to use PS to do that otherwise it creates the mailbox on-prem) but some functions I’m not sure about. Obviously I’ll have to change the MX records too at some point - our on-prem is still the receiving server.

You don’t want Office Online Server, that’s an integration tool for local Sharepoint and Skype for Business/Exchange. Right pain to get working too! You’ll need to run the setup process that pulls down the install. It ends up working similar to Office 2016 once you’ve done this - for instance, 2019 is available in my WDS task sequence to deploy to clients and I have a script that installs it when run locally.

It doesn’t make any sense to me. Even with AX, just having a 1Gb switch with 10Gb backbone with wired connections to the desktops is going to be real-world faster, more reliable, give you PXE, and much easier to build in redundancy. Try 36 machines logging in to Adobe CC at the same time on the same AP.

Urgent problems running Dreamweaver (menus.xml error)
3s-gtech replied to neonetman's topic in Educational Software
Redirected AppData with Adobe CC can be very temperamental (or plain not work) and is unsupported. Can you test without redirection? -

Nuclear - zero carbon, apart from the concrete needed to build the damn thing, and to store the fuel/waste/anything that gets near it.

I think that as part of the work a VPN has to be set up between the hosted server and your own, to run Commandreporter.

Long Shot - Anyone Imaged a Lenovo ThinkBook (15 G2) Lately?
3s-gtech replied to JRA's topic in How do you do....it?
UEFI was what pushed me to MDT. I don’t regret it. FOG was amazing, but MDT is even quicker and definitely more flexible (update the task sequence - boom, new OS version!) -
A quality one, sure. Again - you want reduced risk of total failure and a poor one is more likely to be an issue than no protection on that input.

1600W absolute max, as it'll work fine and boot on only one. You shouldn't spec the UPS to carry both PSUs anyway - better to have each in separate UPSs or one in a wall outlet in case the UPS fails (ask me how I know).

Massive backups running from the host or via the SAN?

Quick answers please: How much storage do you have (Secondary)?
3s-gtech replied to Andycat's topic in How do you do....it?
We’ve got slightly fewer pupils, and we have somewhere in the region of 7TB of storage for shares, home drives and MIS. That’s about half full. -
Garageband will work, at least in my testing up to 10.13 (not got any student machines on later OS!) That’s with limited tracks and complexity. The others, totally agreed.

Mine go straight into a Word or .txt document, as soon as I can after whatever emergency has occurred. These then go into an IT folder in a share, with NTFS restrictions on who can see them.

Profiles on one VM and lots of concurrent logged on users on another on the same host could well be giving you poor performance - the speeds there don't look that high but wait times may well be. Possible to move the VHDX to another drive, or bang a couple of SSDs in the host/SAN for it?
-
Are your host disks being hammered, with long wait times? That'll take an RDS VM to a crawl.

I think the setting is ‘Always show hidden icons’. That gets rid of the show button. If you don’t want those icons showing at all, you’ll need to set that in the registry for each application.
-
Can you at least try? Should be straightforward, depending on what it actually is - may even be doable in Cert Management if it’s Windows based.

Yup, certs here.
