2012R2 server just gone into boot loop - working remotely!!!!
3s-gtech replied to Koldov's topic in Windows Server 2012
I can put myself in your shoes, and have experience of failed hosts. You’re trying to think of the best course of action - repair or rebuild - but I think you will need to reinstall the host OS then reattach the VMs to it. You could cost yourself the weekend otherwise. -

I faulting host is usually best fixed by reinstalling the OS - you can’t afford for it to be flaky. You can re-attach the VMs. There may be some fun if it’s a member server, but not if you have another independent DC (no PDCs, only FSMO role holders). If that’s not possible right now, try to stop it booting any VMs on startup in case they’re bringing it down. It’s an inherently stable platform so quite unusual for it to play up. -

Got the stop code? Is it a VM? -

Is replication working okay between DCs, if you have others? -
PHP query - pulling a string from another site

Probably? It doesn’t have a network port, I’d probably need to buy a card (not sure the ones we have will fit). -
Spain bans air conditioning from dropping below 27°C

I guess it depends how it’s measured - target temperature, a particular point in the room, an average? If it’s target, the outlet zone may get quite hot. Shouldn’t be too much of a risk to component life really though. -
Should be accessed with CMD or CMD+R.

Yes, built using Bootstrap on IIS using LDAPS and some APIs and scripting to pull lots of data together. Very flexible, very complex!

Sierra - Intel only. Can you try booting into Recovery Mode? I have a feeling that won’t work either, but needs a try.

PHP query - pulling a string from another site
3s-gtech replied to 3s-gtech's topic in Web Development
Got it! preg_match('/ITEMP : ((\S+))/', $content, $match); That read the page in $content and outputs the temperature figure as $match[1] I now have a nice neat number in my PHP. Thanks for your help, you pointed me in the right direction! -

Using that I can get ITEMP : to appear in the page output, which is progress - it's capturing that part of the page to the string. What I need is the number (including decimal, so /d is a bit trickier) after it as the string value. -

No, the page is compiled in a CGI application. It won't be somewhat scraping - it'll be very much scraping. I'm fine with that. -
I had a thought yesterday. It was my only one of the day, and it was exhausting. However, it piqued my interest. I'm running APCUPSD on a web server used solely for monitoring the UPS (and others). This provides me with a very simple live web page of the condition of the attached UPS. What's interesting is that the attached UPS has an inlet temperature sensor, which appears to be working accurately. What I'd like to do, is read this temperature figure from the output webpage, as a string, within a page on a completely separate server on our intranet. I understand that I can do this with file_get_contents() and then preg_match() to first load in the page, then examine it searching for a match based on some regex. I can already iframe one page into the other so they're both working okay. What I'm struggling with is getting it to grab the figure I need, which looks like: ITEMP : 21.3 C I want to pull the variable temperature figure into PHP. Any ideas? I can see some good examples online, but struggling to make them work in this context.

I think we’re now at something like 15 years with Xibo. It’s superb. I’m running an old version on Windows, and it does exactly what I need (showing Powerpoints, images, web pages and video files on rotation). Reminds me - one of the first TVs we put in back then has just died - not bad service!

Don't use RAID 5. It's slow. All of my VM hosts use RAID 10 for that reason. You can also let Windows manage it and just pool the disks. I'm currently updating all of my VMs to 2019 from 2012 R2, but really 2022 will be fine and I'd recommend going to that. It's similar enough. You can keep the replicas like that, sure. Hyper-V will just run the VMs that you've moved. You'll need to look at data retention regulations. If everything is in your new MIS, you won't need to retain the old data for as long - but some sensitive data has to be kept longer (I can't remember the specifics). It's 25th birthday of the students in many cases. Your slow replacement will work fine, and is time flexible.

[free] Multiple Monitor types due to upgrades

I have a feeling that we could really do with these, where we have some long in the tooth 4:3 17” screens still in use. They’d have a positive impact. Not that far from you, so collection possible (not sure what in - my cars are small!) -
A2C - OCR and AQA certificates expired, but connection still works?
3s-gtech replied to pete's topic in MIS Systems
Great. Someone’s forgotten to look at the yearly to do list (or script it!) Not going to stress about it too much as we’re locked to WJEC here in Wales for most things. -
Well, that’s embarrassing. And not obvious enough!
-
Haha yeah IRIS Connect - had forgotten about that having used it last year on loan. Second worst product in my experience in all my time in education - and I include some real duffers in that. Clunky, complex, seemingly a box of random bits that sort-of interact. The MIS market needs some ground-up, user focused products built around standards and robust testing.

Anywhere else retaining his natural colour? Quick verification check? Surely this can be scammed with hair dye and a Sharpie for the freckles.

Never done it myself. I’ve had to rebuild the host quite a few times - where a UPS has failed or a memory stick died running the hypervisor. I just keep a few notes and rebuild it from them - but my config is very simple. I can then reattach the VMs back on, and their configs are resumed as they were. I’m sure you can export the config in some way.

Exam board not accepting encrypted Sandisk USB stick?
3s-gtech replied to Zourous's topic in General Chat
Yes, we've had that. Unless it's unencrypted they wouldn't take it. Kind of amazing in this day and age - or that some subjects/boards still aren't using secure uploads. -
