rad Posted May 21, 2010 Author Posted May 21, 2010 When i first started a few years ago, they asked for staff for the residential PE trips. I had only just started so couldnt go. I then got to go for the day with Year 9's to Ypres the next year went on the Yr 8 PE trip to New Forest, walking and outdoor activities. (3 days) Then went to Tower of London with Yr 7's following year did the Yr 8 trip for 5 days to New Forest As of tomorrow, I am off to South West France for a week watersports holiday. As a dinghy and powerboat instructor I have been keen to go and finally I am off. So I am not in school for 2 weeks, lucky me!
Andrew_C Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Once to Toulouse; one child lost all night and one hit by a car 1st trip to Spain; Illicit party after they were all walked back to their host family houses following a mugging 2nd trip to Spain; running around Salamanca on the last night of their uni term looking for 4 miscreants who thought it would be a good idea to go back to the party at 02:00. I've not been on any since that one!
steve Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 I've been on a weekend round trip to Cologne (sleeping on the coach), also done a week in Cyprus. After Cyprus I haven't volunteered for any more - I found it a bit stressful looking after a bunch of teens who only wanted to get drunk. One of our techs has been on the ski trip for a few years, the network manager has been on army camps. We find if we volunteer, the staff are usually more than happy to have us along.
Sylv3r Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Been out a couple of times on day trips here and there, but I tend to give the Technician first chance whether he wants to go or not - more often than not he goes.
jcollings Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 I get to go on trips every year. 200 odd year 7 to North Wales in Feb, same place with year 9 for a weekend, YMCA outdoor centre with year 8, various theatre trips plus I organise our whole school activity day - 900 kids, 30 trips - fantastic! Support staff are actively encouraged to be part of the wider school community so most of us do some trip or other.
john Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 I've done Rock Challenge this year which was great fun, and will most likely do an end of year reward trip as we have 4 options for them over a couple of days so me and my technician can go with a group each The key to getting asked is be non-teaching and a first aider that way you make yourself very invaluable (I am down to do the full first aid course in September's INSET hehe)

laserblazer Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 I used to go on them all but a Head of Year got shirty because I insisted on taking my car on a residential trip and I've since then refused to go on any. As it happened, I had to use my car to run a lad to A&E with a broken arm because there was no other transport available. I might take some G&T kids on a canalboat trip on Monday if this weather holds.

I've dropped very unsubtle hints that I'm more than happy to go to Iceland with the sixth form Geog trip, but it's so far fallen on deaf ears....
localzuk Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 (edited) Got back on Friday from a week long camping trip with our year 8 kids. A week of climbing, cycling, kayaking, shooting etc... I was volunteered to go, and didn't say no - although I did have to check in every day, as I'm the only IT guy. Been on a drama trip to a theatre a couple of years back too. I'm sure there'll be more in the future too. Our school doesn't have a large number of male staff, so we're a useful resource for trips! Edited May 23, 2010 by localzuk

After that I realised how teachers must feel!! Support staff should be welcomed on trips as far as I am concerned, who knows who has what skills. Alot of schools do not include them though...
CESIL Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 I have been on our residential trip to Dorset with year 6 twice in 7 years and am going again this year...I refuse to go every year as then I just get put on the list without being asked...considering I only get paid for 25 hours a week I give up far more than teachers do by going away with the school where I have to be on duty for 50+ hours during the week! If you don't wait to be asked then you are just taken for granted IME Having said all that I also go to the leisure centre to supervise the year 5 boys for swimming and will help out on various other day trips during the year...if I am asked nicely that is

featured_spectre Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Went on a trip to Thorpe park once, only to be told on the coach they forgot to get me a ticket and wanted me to pay for my own at full cost, so I stayed on the coach all day relaxing whilst they were a staff member down. I've been asked since and I refuse now as it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Bev Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I get to go on loads. Have been to Paris for a week twice, and last Friday I spent the day at Beamish. As I don't need to be replaced with supply, I am considered a cheap option to send on trips so get asked quite often.
