Thanks Both, that's really useful feedback. I'm very much trying keep an open mind on both ideas, but the issues mentioned around 1:1 are very much on my mind especially given our student numbers. If anyone has tried this and it worked, or indeed didn't work I'd love to hear more! Regarding UniFi, are you using any routing protocols such as OSPF or ACLs? I also wonder if you've gone for hosted cloud keys or on site?

Morning everyone, I'm hoping those of you working in colleges or larger MATs may be able to offer your thoughts, insights or general expertise. We're a large FE College with around 20 different campuses and circa 25k students; there's a few project ideas which have been suggested and I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who's done something similar at this larger scale. The first is the rollout of a student 1:1 laptop scheme. This has been suggested as a way to better manage our device refresh especially with the upcoming need to retire large volumes of devices which aren't supported for Windows 11. It also has the potential to act as a recruiting tool and improve digital engagement, especially in certain demographic areas. The second is moving our switching and WiFi estate to Ubiquiti. Their price point makes them a compelling proposition, but there are also concerns about EOL policies, support and functionality when it comes to dynamic routing protocols, ACLs and other advanced features that are needed in some areas of the network. Ubiquiti also doesn’t seem to operate via the traditional reseller/partner model, making it harder to compare with traditional vendors which our suppliers and partners recommend. At the moment both are still in the ideas phase, so any input good, bad, or ugly would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Edugeek!

Assuming of course you have administrative rights on the machine, I've found that using "run as different user" will still blank the screen, but instead of asking for a username and password just shows a yes/no choice the user at the other end can click on. I tend to use this trick to open a powershell prompt, then whatever it is from there. Thanks Matt40k, for anyone else who encounters this thread in the future, I've just completed the Express to Standard edition upgrade on 2014 and can second the fact that it's incredibly quick, and the prep work does indeed take longer!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I've found myself in the position of performing an Express to Standard edition upgrade for SIMS with SQL 2014 for one of our schools. I'll do a backup and snapshot and disable network access before the work starts, but I wondered whether anyone who's done this before had any gotchas to be aware of or other steps they'd suggest doing beforehand.

For the benefit of anyone encountering this via a Google search, I was able to resolve this by following the advice in the linked Reddit article and chose to hide tha failed update, check for updates, at which point the previous month's update appeared. I then repeated the process untill an update installed without error (in my case this was KB4019264). I've been through and downloaded the failed updates individually from the catalogue, including KB4338823 and it's on running the MSU file that I get the somewhat confusing Windows update "Security Update for Windows (KB4074598)" could not be installed because of error 2147942402 "The system cannot find the file specified." Hello, I'm hoping one of you lovely people can offer some help with an error I've been struggling with for the past few days. I have a couple of 2008 r2 boxes which steadfastly continue to fail when installing certain updates with the error: Code 80070002 Windows Update encountered an unknown error I've tried downloading the update manually and running it which gives a slightly different error (The following updates were not installed) and in the event log: Windows update "Security Update for Windows (KB4074598)" could not be installed because of error 2147942402 "The system cannot find the file specified." (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\temp\Updates\windows6.1-kb4074598-x64_87a0c86bfb4c01d9c32d2cd3717b73c1b83cb798.msu" ") Which persists no matter from where I try to run the file. I've tried clearning the software distribution folder, several reboots and the steps outlined here https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askcore/2011/02/15/how-to-use-dism-to-install-a-hotfix-from-within-windows/ all without succcess. The update in question, and the only one showing as available when running windows update is kb4338818 but WSUS also lists failures on the Feb and June update. It's also interesting to note that the server lists an option to "install updates and shutdown" which it will try to do but evidently fails at because the option is still there on the next reboot.

This is pretty much the same conclusion I'd drawn - common sense says that in these scenarios it's no different to using a sat nav or stereo, but that like anything in the car you shouldn't become distracted as a result of it.

As has been covered in the news and posted across social media by several police forces, as of March 1st 2017 the penalties for using a phone while driving will increase to six points and a £200 fine as explained in the article from my local force below. When reading the article, one particular phrase caught my attention: Now, I know that use of a hands free kit is legal, but this made me wonder about the use of mobiles in mounts/holders/cradles. I (and I'm sure this is the case for many of you) no longer own a sat nav and instead rely on my phone, in a holder attached a vent, running Google Maps. My interpretation would be that this doesn't break the law, as the phone is not held in the hand. I've located the relevant legislation, Amendment 110 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 which states that: This seems to support my interpretation that the law only prohibits the use of these devices when they are held in the hand, and not those mounted in a cradle or holder. Would you agree with this assessment? Where would I stand if I were to touch the phone, maybe to mute/unmute voice guidance, or accept a new route suggestion? Or to skip to the next track on a music app? On the surface this seems no different to using a traditional sat nav, or even tuning the stereo but I'm struggling to find anything official to support my conclusions. As an aside I also wonder where the line would be drawn? What if I used Google Now via hands free to add a waypoint or program a destination? What if I used Google Now via hands free to send a text message? To take it to the nth degree, what if I typed a text message on the phone while in the holder? Do these activities fall back to "Driving without due care and attention" or is there some specific legislation I'm missing. Thanks in advance for your help. P.S. I'm not looking to start a debate about whether the increased penalties are right or wrong, or on the safety of phone use in cars while driving, just hopefully something to ease my worry about using my phone as a sat nav.

There's a part of me which believes things like this relate more to classroom management than IT Support. If you block this, they'll surely find something else to do instead of work. I've done some testing and found that the registry key below will stop the game running, instead giving the error shown below. I've recently been approached by our Marketing department to recommend a website or software package to allow them to better manage their growing collection of photographs. These vary in nature from professional photoshoots for brochures to images they've taken in house of different departments or events. Currently these are stored in a shared folder with folders for each department, this works OK but they're after something which will allow them to assign multiple tags to a photo which they can later search for. As with all education products this needs to be low cost, bonus points for something free or potentially cloud hosted to take the storage requirements for these things away from our systems.

Hello! I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a WiFi SIP portable phone. I've been using the 3CX phone app on my iPhone for sometime now to answer helpdesk calls over WiFi when out around the building and it'd be great to have a dedicated device to pass out to other colleagues rather than having to setup the app and a dedicated extension on everyone's phone. Any recommendations would be hugely appreciated.
