I was wondering what other schools most commonly reported problem is?

Our is:

Q: "Nothings displaying from my laptop"

A: "Fn + F8 to display on both projector and the laptop"

Whats yours?

Same here. Reply is usually a mix of Fn keys, and checking they have the VGA cable plugged in. Also added in for good effect is that you can't have any video playing software (Windows Media Player etc...) open when trying to get it to display on a projector, only after you have it displaying.

It doesn't seem to matter how many times people are told or shown, they always repeat the same mistakes.

Same again... and always the same teachers...

I had one teacher who scribbled it on the desk, then couldn't read her own writing when she went to do it again :-|

Profile Broken. (windows 7 bug)

With group policy restrictions a user using the short cut keys can change the display to high contrast but the shortcut keys dont change it back.

Same as above, that and "no sound coming through speakers", yup that won't work when you plug the speaker cable into the microphone socket, and thankfully less now some members of staff have retired but "My USB stick isn't loading"

yeah, you've guessed it, USB plugged into ethernet port. :frusty:

I had never seen this until about 2 months ago one of the teachers here did it, had about 50 since then!

From Teachers laptops

its either Fn + F8, or they have no drives mapped because they logged into their laptop at home then just shut the lid and brought it in without rebooting.

From Kids machines

it's either cannot access the network, because some other kid has unplugged the network cable or my keyboard isnt working. Some kid has swapped the keyboard and mouse with the one next to it so when someone starts typing it appears of the screen next to them.

From Admin Dept

Its some random organisation has sent me this file in some obscure file format and now i cant open it.

When they call for the projector problem for the 100th time (always the same simple solutions) you ask if they have tried FN F8, the source button on the remote control etc.. It never works. You must realise they are not listening to any of this. They just want you to come and do it for them!

We gave up on laptops and projectors litteraly years ago. Too much bother.

At the moment we seem to be having a lot of wireless issues. I suspect because we've got a lot of laptops creeping out of the woodwork. We had to close 14 classrooms, so suddenly many teachers found thier rooms being used during their frees.

common problems :

Class laptops losing wifi logon:mad:

Profiles becoming regularly corrupt, drive mappings and network printers disappearing:mad::mad:

Package install failures after rebuilds:mad::mad::mad:

Same olde, Same olde

"Computer X is not starting up" - we have had a spate of USB ports being broken by incorrectly inserted USB sticks, when the contacts are bent and touch the case it appears to short out the machine.

Most annoying and common is the projector won't switch on...

9/10 times its turned off at the wall :mad:

Most random in recent memory.

I saved my work at home and deleted it by accident...can you get it back...

errr...NO!

I have 13 schools that I support.

1 always has the power block unplugged from the Promethean board.

1 at 2 or 3 laptops "cant access the network" "DONT TURN THE WIRELESS OFF THEN!!"

1 has too many pc's and not enough network points, they know this but wont put another network point in or even get a mini switch, and yet they STILL complain that this pc one pc cant access the network.

1 has moaned about laptops not charging in the trolley - "which ones?" I say. "ooh I'm not sure now" they respond. Its always that they've yanked on the cables and dislodged one or more power supplies.

I have another that the teachers in reception are obsessed with moving the equipment about EVERY week and then complain because they haven't connected it all back up correctly or that leads are missing.

The fn+f8/f5 I would say is the most common overall.

Well. . . It's not a reported problem because it's not really possible to report, but the biggest problem i've ever had in all my time in education is

TEACHERS!

students not remembering their passwords

Give staff permission to change pupil’s passwords: in ad give the staff group permission only to change password (advanced security rights)

Here is a kix file call this from a bat file you give the staff.. Hay presto no longer being called by staff to reset student’s passwords:

;**** Change Pupil Password Routine ****

;User must be a member of ICT or Information Managers group

;Only login ids of the format Snnnn can be reset, where nnnn is > 2000

if ingroup ("ict systems") = 0 and ingroup ("infoman") = 0

? "Only information managers or ICT staff have permission to run this script."

?

sleep 3

exit

endif

? "Enter the login id of the pupil whose password you wish to change..."

?

gets $pupilid

? "Enter their new password..."

?

gets $pass

$prefix = substr($pupilid, 1, 1)

$suffix = val(substr($pupilid, 2, 4))

if ($prefix <> 's') or ($suffix < 2000)

? "Not a valid pupil login id."

?

sleep 3

exit

endif

? "Resetting login id " + $pupilid + " to password " + $pass + "....."

?

?

shell "c:\windows\system32\cmd /c net user " + $pupilid + " " + $pass + " /domain"

if @error = 0

?

? "Password has been reset! Wait 5 seconds.... "

?

else

?

? "ERROR - password not reset! Wait 5 seconds...."

?

endif

sleep 5
