I think I'd need a disguise... bleach my hair and dress like a chav or something My best chance I guess would be to head down to our nearest industrial estate and let myself into a lorry trailer, head as far north as possible (must remember food and water!). Can't use your car, might get away with jumping on a bus to somewhere but trains would be a no-no unless your disguise was very good because of CCTV at all the stations. The crucial thing would be to leave no clue of where you'd gone and how you'd got there. You'd have to take as much cash as possible... surviving long term could be tough, you'd have to live somewhere and get food etc. Assuming another identity could be a good idea. I don't think I'd last 5 minutes somehow!

We've got a problem around our network with YouTube. If you go to a YouTube video it pops up a message saying "you need to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video". Strangely, if you go to the YouTube Channel of the user that uploaded the video it will let you watch the video from there. It's very annoying, we only upgraded the package two weeks ago. We are using Flash Player 10.1 which is the current version, but I've noticed that there is a slightly newer version. We're on 10.1.82.76 but the version on the Adobe website is 10.1.85.3 - would this really make such a difference? I'm reluctant to deploy the new version because it looks more like a configuration problem. Is there a wise owl who can inform me of the true way? I should mention we're using IE8.

Some time last year a staff member had a problem with his HP 6710b laptop. It just crawled to a standstill, and I spent hours trying to work out what was slowing it down. I reimaged it, ran it off a live cd, swapped out just about every piece of hardware from it and still it wouldn't do anything at a usable speed. After much tedium it was replaced with a brand new machine and I disassembled it and used it for spares, including the power supply which I had labelled some weeks earlier "Paddy McGinty's Goat" (as the staff member is Irish and it seemed rude not to have a joke about it). On Friday a member of staff brought a 6710b to me which had apparently died. I pulled a power supply from the spares draw and it started straight away... didn't even log in, I knew I'd fixed it so powered it off and gave it back. I got a call two hours later to say that it wasn't letting her on the Internet. When I came to look at it I realised that the whole thing was running like a sloth. Completely baffled, I brought it back to the office and was about mid way through investigating when I noticed a label on the psu. "Paddy McGinty's Goat". I pulled out the power, the laptop switched to batteries and... suddenly it all came back to life. We're all a bit surprised that a psu could have that effect, but most of all it's amusing that the one clue that led me to the solution was my stupid prank from when we first gave our Irish friend his laptop! I am a little bummed that we scrapped a perfectly good machine because of the power supply though

I'm going to assume that nobody has used these... hmmm.

Has anyone had any experience with Zoostorm Business PCs? We're looking for some low spec PCs, but we don't want to buy PCs that die within two years!

I wonder if there's anyone knowledgeable enough to enlighten me on this subject. We've just had a new system put in and are using SCCM/WDS to build our computers. I don't think we've had any trouble imaging machines first time around, but any time we go to reimage a machine we have to delete it out of config manager first, according to the chaps who set the thing up for us, otherwise we can't image anything. This seems like a dumb way of having to do things to me, but being a complete newbie to the system I don't know any better. I miss having a system where we can just image on demand, and I don't understand why we can't do this with SCCM. My suspicion is that it will do what we want it to do but we don't know how to make it do it yet. Not only that, but the method has so far not been foolproof as a collection of MSI Winds we have here needed reimaging but as far as I can see from the smspxe.log the guid of the machines has remained lurking in the database after we've deleted the machine from config manager leaving us unable to reimage. I tried creating bootable media for the Task Sequence, which booted but then gave up, saying there were no tasks for that client. How I assign the task to the machine I don't know. The gaps in my knowledge are vast, and I would appreciate any suggestions for good self help guides because we're not getting the training we had expected to get when the project was started. I've seen lots of step by step "do this, then that, then this and you'll get this" kind of stuff but that's not helping me understand how it all works.

Two completely unrelated issues if you ask me. The Limewire issue is stupid anyway. Too many people expect too much for free, it doesn't matter how loaded you think the music industry is... they have a legal claim to their recordings and that's it. If you don't want to pay for it that's fine... just don't have it. It's not like you'll die if you go without it.

As far as your analogy goes, you're right... but there will always be some clueless people who won't get it unless someone shows them how to do it. Doesn't matter how intuitive something is, some people lack the intuition (or possibly just motivation) to figure these things out. That applies to cars and computers This is something we're considering with upgrading our Office app now.

To be fair, they must incur a cost for offering the service so it seems sensible for them to try to control the usage. You don't get something for nothing.

That's the big question. I do wonder how long the system we rely on is going to last... it's all so fragile. Something happens the other side of the world and it has direct consequences for us in this global economy. There's no guaranteeing that in ten years time we'll be as comfortable as we are now and I think if times get harder people will get more creative about their lifestyles - some may have no choice. I do think we need to be more self sufficient individually and as a nation... "The Good Life" isn't for everyone but I don't think it's as crazy as it sounds (chickens are more useful than goats to be fair;)).

We all rely on working for someone else (true if you're self employed too - you've still got to serve somebody) to earn money which we then use to get what we "need". We're stuck in the rat race and it's actually bad for us. If we all spent less time at work we'd have more time to put towards becoming self sufficient. If a business/organisation is inefficient it's not working properly... it's a waste. The business should treat employees fairly, but it should also be efficient. I think having too much staff is irresponsible bad management. Businesses are businesses, not charities, and should be allowed to concentrate on doing what they do not wasting time on politics.

We had some instruments handpainted with the school logo etc. for school concerts and stuff like that. I'll ask our music technician who did it.

Actually, if you install ie6 (check out ies4linux) in wine and point it at https://nameofyourcc3server/ you can access the management console very easily. You can also capture .img of your build floppies and subsequently rewrite them in linux.

That's bizarre. I can see the sense in consolidating datacentres, but not moving them to the US... I guess there must have been a significant cost advantage for them to consider this? There must be plenty of options home in the UK that they could have gone for surely?

Luddite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I've been surprised over the last couple of years to find machines doing jobs that I thought it would never be possible for them to do. Two examples would be automated checkouts in supermarkets, and voice recognition on customer support lines. We've all encountered them and often the experience has been diabolical but it is improving noticeably. This trend will continue, I think it's inevitable. Who knows, we may in 10 years be using cars that drive themselves. Our lives already display a clear dependence on machines. I don't think that's wholly bad or wholly good, my question would be, would we survive if our machines were taken away?

If you're able to browse to it then you should be able to mount it. It's got to be either a syntax or credentials issue when you use the mount command. I'm at home right now so I can't tell you exactly what I did but it's along the lines of "sudo mount -t smbfs -o credentials=//.credentials /// /media/sims" (I use a .credentials file but you can use -u= and it will then prompt for a password. Apparently cifs is supposed to be better but smbfs worked so I stuck with that.

Pretty much as you described... I mounted the s:\ drive in linux to a location like /media/sims or something and then configured wine to present this directory as the s:\ drive. You should then be able to access the s:\ drive using /home//.wine/dosdevices/s: I think. Before you run the installer you probably need to install .net framework. I'm pretty sure I managed it but I don't remember how.
