I'm trying to like Umbrella but its coming across as pretentious twaddle to me... reminds me of how they ruined the watchman movie. Full of retro music and long drawn out scenes.

 

Me too. Watched the first episode of Season 2 and thought "what on earth was that!"

I can see why it may grate on some people, especially those that didn't like the movie adaptation of Watchmen. Gerrard Way, the creator of the comic has said that the Watchmen comics were his inspiration and it wouldn't exist if they didn't. Obviously the movie was also an inspiration on the TV show and with Gerrard Way being a musician himself, I can understand the music tie-ins. Personally I quite enjoy them. Season 1 took a little while to build and was a lot better towards the end. Season 2 builds on the progression of season 1.

Started watching Twin Peaks for the first time curtesy of significant others box set, it really is bizzare!

She not seen The Bridge (the orginal scandanavian version) yet so got the first season on DVD ordered off eBay for £3.70. That's cheaper than renting it from Amazon!

I loved the 90s Twin Peaks, but only managed the first eppy of the 2017 season. It just seemed like a "let's make this as weird as possible and have a laugh at people thinking it all means something".

I found the new episodes were worth watching, very weird, maybe that's why I loved them. There was one episode which is really trippy and amazing, I recommend giving it another try

I aim to, but no-one else in the house interested, and there's so much more on the "me time" shows that i want to see.

I think so, was quite taken by the almost bad acting from quite skilled actors at first until it was pointed out it was a David Lynch thing. Then it all made sense.

It is a little dated, but enjoying it so far and you can definately see how it influenced other TV series down the line.

 

@DJ-1701 I've ordered the orginal Scandanavian version. I've not seen the remake, but I suspect that shifting it from the gloomy Denmark/Sweden location to the southern US/Mexico would remove a lot of the atmosphere, happy to be corrected by those who have seen both though.

We're watching "Ozark" at the moment - very good crime series, a spritual successor to "Breaking Bad" (not that I particularly liked that, thinking about it now!).

Finally managed to get the fam to agree to watch the first ep of Lovecraft Country. Trailer slightly NSFW for horror reasons:

Mlle LeMarchand's proviso was that she was off to bed if she didn't like it - though, as it turns out, she thought it was a drama about racism in the US (obviously too busy with her phone when we watched the trailer) - and Mme LeMarchand announced that I wasn't to wake her if she fell asleep. An hour later, they were both happy to add it to the watch list, though Mlle LeMarchand was somewhat terrified by the last act as she didn't know who Lovecraft was. That said, whilst I knew he was somewhat racist (the "On the Creation of N***ers" poem mentioned on the show wasn't in any of the anthologies I've read!), I never realised quite how bad he was until some post-show research. The show seem to be able to appreciate his literature while condemning his views, though.

 

Based on the first ep, highly recommended - you may even learn something about just how bad things could be in the US if you were black.

On the second disk of my Due South rewatch. Mark Ruffalo guest starred in one ep. Strange that I don't come across "now very famous" actors in more guest slots. He was playing a guy who was planning on "selling" his baby to pay off gambling debts.
