We've got a log burner in our 3 bed suburban semi and it gets the most of the ground floor and the upstairs landing up to a nice toasty 26C most evenings (would probably heat the bedrooms okay too if we left the doors open). I don't disagree with anything else you say. Having to buy in fuel means it's probably not a cheaper alternative, but it works great.

I like the softcat ecat portal for getting quick prices for random bits. And they can set you up so you submit orders and your finance/bursar has a logon to authorize the order. Or you can just turn your shopping basket into a quote.

Site team has some taller ladders that would get us maybe 2m off the ground, anything above that we'd have to use the scaffold tower. Some years, our site team has rented a scissor lift for the summer holidays (I assume the site manager has a potential time savings v cost of the lift metric to know whether it's worth it for that holiday).

As I recall, buying through ASM (which would be the same for any MDM) you get the number of licenses you need to cover your concurrent device installs.

Our Drama department is going to get a set of 5-10 tablets for this (if the ones they want ever come back in stock). We looked at laptops/chromebooks, but they're too big and unwieldy for how they want to use them.

Enjoying the new series of Reacher so far. Also, Season 1 of Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda is getting uploaded to YouTube a couple of episodes a week (I think by the official channel), so been watching those. It generally holds up pretty well. [edited to fix typos]

I had the TF101 transformer back in the day, and it was so rugged and chunky you could do light DIY with it. The main drawback was it was heavy and chunky enough you'd probably take someone out if you threw it at them.

Do they have to buy through the govt or an "approved vendor"? I've seen few LTT videos framed as "Linus/employee's kid is starting school and the school says they need a Chromebook" so they rock up at %local tech superstore% and browse. (I assume that's really how it works in Canada)

Tried taking a photo inside the pinhole camera and it came out way better than I expected. Between the eclipse and watching the Perseids later on 'twas quite an "astronomical evening".

I'm probably being a bit dense. What's BSF? Most schemes I've seen more recently are lease type schemes, where parents pay for them over the 3-5 years, but until they're paid off, they're owned by the school/leasing company so schools can manage them, and they're under warranty from the leasing company. In other countries a "school laptop" does seem as much of an expectation as uniform or a book-bag/rucksack is here (at least looking in from the outside). I do agree that a lot of rushed/half-baked, lockdown-driven schemes put a lot of people off, and that's probably part of it. That aside, the main hurdle for us (an I imagine I'm not alone) is that the perception of laptop use in school is largely driven by how an 8 year old student "laptop trolley" laptop with half the keys missing performs (how will they charge it between lessons? etc). Maybe, but for us the requirement for students using computers across the curriculum, all the time, is just increasing and it's going to go up more now we're going "phone free" so they can't get the kids to use their phones. We're getting into the silly position that the school definitely doesn't want a student 1:1 device scheme for all the reasons talked about in this thread but we need enough shared devices for all the students.

Had a good position from the end of the drive, and the pinhole camera I made from yesterday's Amazon box was a great success. (Much better than the collendar, which I couldn't get to work.)

We've found that most touch screens just need to be the primary display to work (or they don't work at all in extended). If that works for you, then you could have a script using multi-monitor-tool to set all that up.

I think you're right to be cautious, but if it's hosted on your SharePoint and the code analysis you're getting doesn't show any signs of it sending data externally, then I don't see a problem with trying it, although I'd definitely be making the staff member who made it be the one to support it and fix it when it inevitably breaks. If you didn't want to or couldn't use it for whatever reason, then maybe you could redirect that staff member's efforts into power automate. As you've described it, the first app doesn't sound it like it does anything that couldn't be done with forms and automate.
