Netflix has been recommending it to me pretty heavily, and I'm a little intrigued..

 

It's on our list, but seems like it could be a bit teen angsty. Most of the good reviews seem to be people trying to avoid getting accused of not meeting the internet's ever-changing standards of morality by praising the strong roles for women and (mistakenly) claiming that it's the first time Nimue has been the star of the show. Obviously haven't read Philip Reeve's "Here Lies Arthur", which also includes a bit of gender identity stuff, from over a decade ago. Heck, the Sam Neill Merlin from over 20 years ago had a good part for Nimue.

 

Still, it's hard to imagine Frank Miller writing something too teeny. (Assuming it's relatively close to the source material).

I tend to avoid looking up reviews for tv shows because they often tend to be a bit spoiler-y

Movies and games hardly ever seem to be.. Or maybe I just have rubbish luck.

Only watched the first 2 episodes so far, but I'd say it's pretty good. There is some angst - Nimue is portrayed as a slightly rebellions youngster (at least in the early episodes), but I didn't think it distracted from a pretty interesting fantasy story. To me, it feels almost half way between CWs The Outpost and Sky's Britannia.

Read an article that suggested show runners are looking at designing seasons so that they have a way wrap up earlier than expected in the case of another lockdown. While this sounds sensible, it does make me wonder if the intervening episodes will just end up as filler if they don't get locked down.

 

In a similar area, there must be a few unknowns who are getting their potential big breaks only to find that the pandemic gets their show cancelled before filming commences. Can you imagine getting that close to your dream and how gutted you'd be if that was the closest you ever got?

We're currently working our way through the new Twilight Zone series. As with the original, some episodes are excellent, some are just bad, and some are in between.

 

Worth a watch if you're into horror / mystery / sci-fi.

I've seen shows do split seasons before, with each half having it's own resolution (although Teen wolf is the only example I can think of right now). Most of the CW DC shows wrapped their main story arks before 'Crisis' and then started new arks for the back half. The longer US shows always used to have a mid-season mini-climax before they broke for Christmas.

I really don't see formatting more like that would be a problem or necessarily lead to a abundance of filler.

Salvation was cancelled after season 2. While would have I loved to have seen where it went next, the season 2 finally did feel like a suitable ending.

 

Have you tried Bulletproof? (Just finished season 2 and that was good fun.

A few things we've been watching over the last few months that may be of interest: Kim's Convenience - Canadian sitcom about a Korean family that run a convenience store, similar sort of vibe to Little Mosque on the Prairie; The Gift - Turkish supernatural(?) thing about a feted artist (who basically paints the same symbol over and over again) who may have a link to a mysterious find at an archaeological dig site; Vagrant Queen - not surprised it's got the chop, but sporadically fun; Medical Police - comedy about a pair of globe-trotting doctors who solve crimes/battle terrorists, I think this is a spin-off from a show I've never seen and is one of those shows that doesn't quite hit the mark; Reef Break - the lovely Poppy Montgomery stars in a show that was clearly hoping for the slot soon to be cleared by the end of Hawaii Five-O, but didn't last the course.

 

Also just finished a rewatch of the marvellous Galavant (comedy musical set in days of yore - loved it just as much) and restarted on Due South (Mounty goes to Chicago on the trail of the killers of his father and, for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, remains attached as liaison with the Canadian Consulate) which is still great too. Shame the DVD set I have is of middling picture quality.

 

Watched the first eppy of Cursed, better than I was expecting. Was a bit confused as I thought I recognised the lead from the stills as I've not seen anything she's been in - and in the show she looked a lot like another actress that i can't quite recall. Also a bit confused as to why she would ride her bestie into a village that was mid pillage. I might stop watching if a love triangle develops between the Bad Boy monk chappie and the nice Arthur.

 

Still, almost worth it for the comedy wolf hand puppet at 1:19 here (bare male bottom shortly after this).

 

 

Also, am I the only one who keeps thinking of this every time they say Nimue? (Probably NSFW by today's standards)

Apparently it was on YouTube for free for a while... in Canada.

 

Love both those songs, and have them both on my Spotify list. (Also have both soundtrack CDs). Due South had some great music (introduced me to Sarah McLachlan) and had the decency to list the songs in the credits, which was a great help in those early days of the internet when it didn't take seconds to get an answer to such questions. Always polite, those Canadians.

That's "Ride Forever" - @TechMonkey's first link. Some of the scenes they've cut together are of pretty decent resolution, way better than my (legit!) DVD. Wonder where they were sourced...

Finished season 2 of The Umbrella Academy last night.

 

It really is superb stuff! Great fun, good plot and gorgeous to watch.

Been watching Perry Mason. It's got a proper "noir" feel. It's the story of how he went from PI to Lawyer. Really good

Finished The Letter for the King on Netflix. After a rocky start, it did get better. OK, not to "OMG!!! Watch this, you guys!!!" levels, but to "If you watched the first and then thought that maybe you'd give it another go one day, then you may be pleasantly surprised".

 

Looks like they took the bare bones of the book and brought it a bit more up to date and added overt fantasy elements. Still obviously based on a children's book, but not too bad.

Wizards, the final Tales of Arcadia installment dropped on Netflix earlier.

 

My kids are about as excited as I've ever seen seen them.

 

Here's hoping this is as good as Trollhunters and 3Below.

I'm trying to like Umbrella but its coming across as pretentious twaddle to me... reminds me of how they ruined the watchman movie. Full of retro music and long drawn out scenes.
