You can scarcely believe it could turn from a documentary about rare reptile deals into a big cat docu into a true crime series. It's like a Sons of Anarchy storyline that got canned for not being believable enough!

LeMarchand Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 Finally got some clue as to whether the eponymous protagonist of Messiah was just a nutter/terrorist in Ep 6. (Well, possibly). Hoping there is some resolution at the end of the season, as Netlfix have axed it. Saw the recent (non-theatrical) film of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries advertised and thought we'd give the preceding series a go. The first ep was a lot of fun; a bit like a more sassy version of Agatha Christie set in Australia. All power to Miriam Margoyles for getting well known enough to be hired in an Australian show. Also caught the first ep of the BBC adaptation of Malory Towers. My memories of the books are very hazy (yes, I read them) but the tone seems right. Less sure about the amount of makeup they've plastered on the lead actress or the surprisingly (for a private school post WW2) diverse cast. There's one girl with a facial deformity (who they tend to keep out of shot ), a number of Asian and Black girls and there's even a Yank! As usual, they appear to have forgotten that there are countries east of India.

Ratings are pretty bad, so it'll need a "We weren't able to shoot enough pilots" miracle to get a renewal .
LeMarchand Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 (edited) Just read that "Leverage" is to return for IMDb TV/Amazon with most of the main cast. Timothy Hutton is (obviously) out and Aldis Hodge is getting plenty of work, so will only be a recurring character. Noah Wylie will be joining the cast. Given how the show ended, I'm curious to see how the changes will be explained as well as looking forward to new eps. Edited April 23, 2020 by LeMarchand

We're watching and sort-of enjoying it (though Ben and Michaela are really annoying) but it's one of those shows that gets watched because it's "easy" while there are more challenging shows that I would rather watch and I think we'd all enjoy more if there weren't easier fallbacks.

mikeprice Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Watched the first few episodes of Devs last night Some good bits like a hacker getting into a password protected app on a phone but not in the normal Jeff Goldbloom carp manner - not a lot better but he had a screen with lots of windows open and only one looked like a command prompt - and it was clear that he was looking at comms and it seemed to have taken his some time to get into it OK not great but better than normal thne lots of just stupid and totally impossible stuff - I don;t mind suspending some belief and massively extending the possible but this went WAY over the top in some respects but then other bits were kinda OK bit of a weird programme - but we watched it through as the actual programme and characters were actually quite good

Also you'd have thought Amaya would have had access to better software of the type they were found to be using in ep 3. And what sort of weirdo builds a giant statue of his young girl and places it somewhere that people will be walking under her skirt? We are enjoying it though! I was wondering why the young girl from Pacific Rim: Uprising was credited in each episode but not visible, until i looked up her character - she's the young tech guy in the Gold Room.

It's a sitcom about a Korean family who run a convenience store in Canada, that reminds me of the tone of "Little Mosque on the Prairie". In ep 3 I learned about the Korean equivalent of a wedgie, the Ddong Chim. All I can say is "Ouch!", "What the hell?" and "excercise caution when Googling this".

It's very Alex Garland--hypnotic, dreamy, beautiful cinematography, and big ideas... that he only skims the surface of in a way that written science fiction has been doing better for decades. I still watched it all and found it strangely compelling, but as with Ex Machina, Sunshine and Annihilation, I came away slightly unsatisfied that it never really dug into its topic in a new way. It's like a greatest hits album of SF themes done by a really competent covers band. Nick Offerman was surprisingly good in it, too.

We watched Van de Valk and really though it was poor no depth and some very clumsy scenes reminded me of the normal American stuff (obviously not stuff like The Wire etc)
