FishCustard Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 I think it makes sense - he's the kind of person who wants to see the best in things (see the very first episode - arguing the essential goodness of humanity to the Q), to do what he feels is right regardless of the consequences. He also felt that the Federation tried to do the same thing, to live up to the same ideals he had (and mostly - from what we saw - it did). Once it abandoned him (as he sees it) he felt alone in the world - particularly having lost Data as well. I loved the bit where he said something to the effect of "I've not been asking anything of myself, I've just been sitting here waiting to die" before getting up and on with solving the mystery.

It was still good and I wan't to see what happens next, it just felt like not very much actually happened. Has anyone else been watching Cobra on Sky? We're up to episode 4 and enjoying it so far.

Looking forward to next week. Agreed. If this is the kind of pace to expect from Picard, I'll enjoy this much more than Discovery. Don't get me wrong I will watch season 3 when it comes out but sometimes I like the pace to slow down at times. We seem to be in this weird phase where Sci Fi/Fantasy need to move 100 miles an hour, prevent the audience from slowing down and understanding whats going on. I watched Lost in Space season 2 and.. it was just non stop. By the time you reacted at something.. it was the next disaster to deal with. Mandalorian also got the pace almost right (even though again, it was one disaster after another). And to think we used to criticise the 6 disasters a season back in the day of original 20+ episode Star Trek.

I was a big fan of TNG so was looking forward to this new series and it didn't disappoint. I also liked Discovery when I watched it on Netflix and I've found myself watching it again on E4.

That is also how Star Trek used to work - 75% thoughtful, 25% pew-pew. DS9 changed in the latter half of the series, but it made sense because it'd been building toward the war for about 5 seasons.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 Picard was excellent. Different to the also excellent Discovery with a slower, more thoughtful pace. Episode one was about filling in the blanks since Nemesis. It rewarded people who watched that movie and the broader TNG series whilst not making that show or movie required viewing. I appreciated the globetrotting instant travel being treated as casually as it should be on a world where transporter beams exist. The action sequences were nicely shot and always had an emotional element which was nice. And that reveal at the end posed so many questions!! 1

One of which being they all traveled down from Seattle in the Volvo, so where did Tyler get his car from... Pedantic I know, but those little things get me!

Serious for the most part, but some well-written humour also. Apple have clearly sunk some cash into it. The biggest surprise for me was how good Jennifer Aniston was. It seems she was wasted in Friends! Also, Star Trek: Picard. Just superb! The story is good, I like he characters and the level of fan-service is superb without spoiling the experience for new viewers.

I'd agree; the penultimate season was getting into thornier issues around "no ethical consumption under capitalism", which was fantastic to see on a network sitcom of all places, but the last season stepped back from that level of moral philosophy to be about tying up the story instead. The story ended on the second-to-last episode, really, but I can't really begrudge them the last episode given that I cried my way through the entire 54 minutes!
