British drivers are idiots regardless of celebrity influence.

This has to be the quote of the century. I mean it. The lack of respect and common sense on roads today is quite shocking - one of the reasons I bought a dash cam. The standard of driving is appauling, but unfortunately it cannot be policed. It's not speed that kills, its reckless driving/driver.

By what measure is driving appalling in the UK? In terms of road deaths we are one of the safest countries: List of countries by traffic-related death rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No sane person is influenced by a comedy show.

I never watched bottom and ever felt the need to inflict mindless violence on a friend or relative

But it did influence my Halloween costume, just minus the cattle prod!

I'll be honest, I used to speed. I never thought anything about going ~10mph over the limit and it wasn't due to Top Gear but social pressure and because I thought I knew the road and my car. But over time I've realised it just wasn't worth speeding due to the safety concerns and the extreme levels of enforcement in use nowadays. Once my student driving habits were shed (with help from some recent accidents that wasn't speed related or even my fault, one I was a passenger!) the rest of my driving improved considerably with longer brake times, smoother ride and far far more patient with less stress.

Now I am far more aware of traffic and others around me on the road and capable of anticipating a lot more appalling behaviour by other drivers to avoid incidents (who are probably rushing around like I used to!).

@sparkeh: You can't measure it. A majority of cases nothing happens beyond some angry honks and hand gestures when some idiot cuts you up or decides a motorway is a perfect place to park their car.

People seem to be in a rush, there's no common courtesy anymore. Lack of indication, lack of lane discipline. The list goes on.

No-one's perfect, but some drivers just lack that common sense and/or driving skills.

I never watched bottom and ever felt the need to inflict mindless violence on a friend or relative, nor did I feel it necessary to randomly abuse a spanish waiter (or any waiter for that matter) because John Cleese told me to do so subliminally.

Does every program we watch now have to display a Jackass style warning?

"This show is not real, do not attempt to fly a green spaceship through a wormhole and then perform everything backwards for a few hours."

All those ladies who got a "Rachel" are hardly insane. You're obviously not influenced by TV. Unless you've ever used the word "smeg".

Don't forget, influence can be positive: lots of scientists cite Star Trek as the reason they got into science (and Whoopi Goldberg was inspired by Uhura, but you can't win 'em all).

its been reported to his management whatever else has/hasnt happened it needs investigating properly and that pretty much means he is off until its resolved the same as anyone else. At this point it dosent actually matter as such if he did hit someone but proper procedure has to be followed

And I agree with that, it should follow the normal procedure and if that involves suspension then so be it. The problem I have is people reading an article which speculates that he has assaulted someone and then taking that as fact. It isn't fact, it has never been confirmed by anyone at any level of the BBC (and has been denied by multiple people).

People like to run with things, I'm just saying that people should wait before passing judgement either way. Those defending him should wait and see what the investigation brings up, and those condemning him should do the same. We simply don't know enough about it to make an judgement or decision. He's just been involved in something that has resulted in his suspension, we don't know what yet.

That is not quite correct. It has been confirmed that an accusation has been made by a producer on the program. The actual phrase I have seen was that a "punch was thrown", which is subtly different than "he punched someone" (the latter implies a hit, the former does not), but either is serious. The fact that the BBC have suspended a key presenter on one of their flagship programmes is clear evidence that they take the accusation seriously - that it is a credible accusation. Others have said that there was an incident and even Clarkson has said he has 'regrets' - which for Clarkson is quite an admission.

While it is not correct to hang Clarkson without concluding the investigation, there is clearly something that needs to be investigated and it is clearly serious enough that suspension is warranted. Well, OK, unless you think the BBC is entirely populated by brainless goons who don't understand and are incapable of understanding their own products. Calling for his reinstatement regardless of the outcome - now that is ignoring the evidence we do have.

Captain slow and the hammond both say its silly and laughing about it being all blown out of proportion and yet everyone is changing their underwear about it.

Some people really dont hold back with the loathing even with such little information.

This. A million times this.

I can't believe there isn't another oaf in telly land that can stand next to May and Hammond and shout POWEERRR every now and then.

Gregg Wallace would be perfect for that! :)

Interestingly, he owns the rights to Top Gear, so can just up sticks and move the whole show to Sky where they will let him say and do whatever the hell he wants...

Not anymore, the bbc bought his production company who owned the rights.

The stop test is pretty much their regular baiting of the various safety campaigners out there and any driver should know their own car isn't fitted with sports-grade brakes plus warmed up racing tyres on a searing hot road and they certainly won't be stopping in a controlled environment where reaction times are excluded from the test.

I don't think the stock Vauxhall Astra they used for the stop test had 'sports-grade' brakes somehow...

They do make a good point though - the stopping distances were set back when cars mainly had drum brakes and electronic aids like ABS and ESP hadn't been invented. I don't suggest Top Gear's test was entirely accurate, but there is a point there that our road rules are horribly in need of updating for the modern world.

Presumably those rule updates would need to ban drum brakes and generally any old cars from the road, since it's all very well that you can stop on a sixpence, but if the old MG behind you can't, you will be entertaining them in your boot.

not to mention the vastly increased number of cars on the road and the distractions in car phones and my personal why is that even allowed in car touchscreens as part of the oem kit surely thats just the dumbest idea ever yes lets just replace buttons / toggles that are fixed and you dont need to look at with a touchscreen requiring you to take your eyes off the road genius. I honestly dont know how people have as many accidents as they already do on the motorway @70 its a straight road all you need to do is look where you are going and to the rear/side when changing lanes

It's not just the brakes themselves... My old Morris tyres were amazingly narrow! You can do an upgrade to disk brakes but with only a small amount of rubber on the road it doesn't make a huge amount of difference!

I still think its a media stunt,

The way that the three are all joking about it does not sit right with me,

Me too. I frequent various car forums and the general consensus is that this series is the worst so far.

I think they were planning for a one week ban - that would have seen viewing figures surge for the following episode. But the BBC has called their bluff and cancelled the remainder.

I say get guest presenters in like HIGNFY. Or better still, replace him with Guy Martin.

possibly all part of the plan?

Guy Martin is a great idea!
