Andrew_C Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 It has lost some appeal to me, as Witch says the "faked up competitions" are yawn worthy. Clarkson is a professional oaf - but I don't think I'd bother watching without him.

rich_tech Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I enjoy the program on and off myself, but think its gotten worse over the last couple of years, the competitions are staged and poor, there are other cars than the supercars always on there, it used to be something topical when it did things like review ordinary cars, but thats all gone by the wayside nowadays. 1

I wonder why Cpt Slow and the Hamster can't present two more re-edited shows without Clarkson to end the season? Still sad if this is the end, I like the old buffoon and think the format is very entertaining, especially the specials. I think most Clarkson controversies have been complete over reactions. We need more details to know whether this is more of the same or something more serious.

GREED Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 The thing is long long ago this stopped being about the cars, it is an entertainment show through and through... and despite everything and all the moans about it not being about cars... it is so so incredibly popular both here and abroad and makes so much money for the BBC. I mean they employ comedians who had said and done a hell of a lot worse, yet somehow they are exempt from criticism or censure. @bald_pig I am so very sorry to hear that I have been trying for 4 years to get tickets...

I've been on the waiting list for 5-6 years, so I'm pretty gutted! At least I'm fairly local, and hadn't booked a hotel or anything, I'm guessing a few people would have done.

We would expect no less of any other presenter... a suspension while an investigation takes place. Jeremy Clarkson has no greater right to bypass this than anyone else. The problem from Top Gear's point of view is that thetiming of the suspension means that the investigation is unlikely to be complete in the next two weeks... hence scrapping those programmes and, at best, possibly using them to kick off a new series. Simply delaying them a few weeks won't happen because it will mess with the long planned schedules and the cast and crew undoubtedly have other commitments for the off air season.
Ant Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Jeremy Clarkson is a bit of an idiot, but I like him and enjoy the show. It wouldn't be the same without him and I'm sure the BBC would lose loads of viewers. If he did punch someone, then yes, he probably should get sacked, you wouldn't get away with it in any other business, but at the same time it would be a shame for Top Gear. Regarding Top Gear as a show, it is a great entertainment show that has to appeal to the masses and not just car geeks like me/us. If they just reviewed 'normal' cars and didn't do any of the silly stunts, the general public would lose interest. Any real car enthusiast already knows to take everything on the show with a pinch of salt. You have to enjoy it for what it is and if real cars shows are what you're after you have to look no further than YouTube where there are some fantastic channels catering for our needs. They have to be seen to be doing the right thing with regards to Clarkson, however Top Gear today is Clarkson, Hammond and May. The show may well survive without Clarkson, but I doubt Hammond and May would stick around. A more likely scenario is that they all leave and create a new show on Sky or Channel 4. Also even if they did stick around I would expect Top Gears rating to fall through the floor globally, 350 million viewers currently, how many will keep watching without him? Half would be the best they could hope for. Lets be honest here the BBC have just lost all control when it comes to Top Gear, it's become way bigger than they are able to deal with. I actually wanted to know about real cars An unpopular view, I am sure But as others have said it has over the years moved from a car show to a light entertainment show featuring cars. Purely car shows go the way of fifth gear and get shunted from channel to channel as the audience dwindles as they are only interesting up to a point (with the odd exception like below) and it has to be said watch 5th gear and most of the screen time there is on cars most people cant afford as well they just use rockingham/millbrook instead of their own track Apart from wheeler dealers, I love that programme! yeah that's a good programme (and back on the 23rd) also still on discovery fasn n loud is good as well but definitely more scripted.

When I was working as a TA I used to muck about in a garage dealing solely with Morris Minors and know just how much more the cost is to repair / do one up to that standard.

Over reliance on speed cameras, lack of sufficient traffic cops, no regular re-testing, keep taking your test till you squeeze a pass, possibly even the driving age (17 too young?). There's plenty of reasons for our poor driving standards. A pensioner shouting "POWEERRRRR" at a camera isn't one of them 7
