JRowley Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Sadly the only sensible solution for the BBC is to sell Top Gear in my view, May and Hammond look to both be going (May has already updated his twitter to state he is a former tv presenter) so they will need to start from scratch on a new team. If you are going to do that, and revamp the show, why keep the name? The brand may well be a strong one but the brand has stronger ties with those three than anything else in my view. So they should sell the show, either to the three of them or another network, then start a new show with a new team and new format. Sadly as this is the sensible solution, it won't actually happen, but never mind.
Dos_Box Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Mike Brewer is a shyster, he does nothing for Wheeler deelers apart from being Cockney and "getting deals" which in reality, are only done because its on TV. Nobody could restore a car for as little as they do. As for Edd Chyna, well as qualified as he is, he doesn't do the work all himself, he has a chap called Paul behind the scenes (mostly) who does a large chunk of it as well, but he doesn't want to be shown on camera as much unless there is a 2 person job to do which Ed absolutely cannot do himself. And as for the cars they "sell", they're mostly "sold" to the crew when they can't find legitimate buyers and then later put up for auction. There was a website about the show made by one of the former crew that pretty much gave away their secrets. I think it's quite obvious that they can't do the job with just Edd (who is qualified to the eyeballs BTW) bit Mike is there to provide the trade counterpoint as he used to be a used car salesman and admittedly still comes across as such in WD. He did do a rather good documentary about one othe RAF Chinooks the other year though. I've watch WD quite a bit and am quite familer with the time and processes it takes to do large mechanical jobs and the only reason they can do it in budget is that Edd works for free. They never break even once you factor in labour costs. Still, I find it an entertaining and informative program and quite realxing to watch for some strange reason A bit like watching the old Win 98 defrag As for Top Gear, I think it will be like Man Utd once Ferguson left. The BBC will big it up with the new faces, but it will fade into mediocracy when the new faces come on board. Couple this with the very real possibility that the remaining 2 presenters (their contracts are up in October IIRC) will most likely up sticks to where ever Clarkson has gone and it's game over for Top Gear once they hit the screens again. There was a reason Top Gear was as popular as it was, and it's not because it's on the BBC.

Whoever signs them will be laughing... but the bbc gave their top star away for free, that's the best comedy they have made in the past 10 years ! You say that almost as if Clarkson bears no responsibility at all! Had he wanted a hot meal he could have jumped in the Helicopter and gone for one, instead of going to the pub for several hours, keeping everyone waiting and then getting upset because having delayed his own departure, he turfs up at the hotel after they have stopped serving food. But of course, he's a big star so we should encourage him to behave abominably because money is much more important and that is exactly the kind of behaviour and role model we need to put on pedestals for children to emulate.

I think that was obvious from my comment which sought to highlight the actual issue. To say it in another way : it looks like I believe that the law should apply to everyone and overpaid bully boy public schoolboys don't get let off just because they keep the prols noses glued to the cretins lantern. Anyone else would weather the storm because they're a commercial entity and Top Gear brings the money, so their executives would back them, but the BBC are seen by many as representative of the country, and if they'd let him get away with it, there'd have been all sorts of whining in the House of Commons. Besides, if it wasn't for this, you know there'd have been something racist/sexist/daft in another three months and we'd have gone through the same rigmarole again. A cynical man might think Clarkson, May & Hammond have been feeling annoyed at the limitations of the BBC and have been deliberately pushing to get the excuse to leave and go to Sky where they'll have more freedom to do as they please...

Another month or so and they can do something really offensive and outlandish for their last show to generate publicity and go skipping off to Sky with walletfulls of cash. No punching of production staff needed. Should they have been treated better? Maybe. But had they not sat in a pub drinking and came back so late the kitchen closed they would have had some hot food. Or order a pizza or something! I'm sure they could have added a comedy spin to that and integrate it into the show. It wouldn't surprise me if alcohol played a strong part in this event. And now the Police have gotten involved it seems going to jail for assault is a bit too extreme for a publicity stunt.

Annoying thing is each time Clarkson has got shot for what people don't like I have seen far worse on MTV (FAR FAR Worse) and that's only from my 5 minute worth of watching with the other half mesmerised by it. As for the assault they had to punish him, the people who are trying to prosecute him claim everyone defending him has defended his assault. Correction - They are defending his personality on a TV show they enjoy. And they are still wanting to punish him for what he did but like May this entire thing has been blown out of proportion and the BBC has been as always questionable over their handling of it. Still I hope and wait for him to be given community service or a hefty fine (which is a good idea) and get grabbed by Sky along with James and Hammond. Without the "High Moral" ground the BBC attempts to take people can then choose to watch the show. I said it once and will say it again (this isn't going to be popular) if you don't like the show you really shouldn't be watching it. I know a few may jump at that one but I do not get why people complain about shows then watch them.... that would be like me buying a Windows phone when I am not a fan. Definitely time for a change. +2 I haven't actually watched the latest series as I felt it had just gone stale after the last one. I think the people who signed that petition asking for Clarkson to be re-instated need to seriously think about what they're condoning and supporting. I'm sure Clarkson have plenty of offers of work elsewhere so I don't imagine it'll bother him too much. Hammond/May have pretty much said they'll go with him. I can't imagine the BBC being able to continue Top Gear in the short term as I don't expect anyone will want to be seen to be the person trying to replace Clarkson. Just for the purpose of injecting some Top-Gear style controversy I'll leave this Stewart Lee video here :- 1

It is the 1,000,000 people who signed a petition demanding his reinstatement and "freedom to fracas" that need to wake up and realise that violence and bullying at work is unacceptable in any context - whether a 'star' of their favourite programme is involved or not. 3

That could be routine for when the show is effectively off-air for a while because 80% of their work doesn't involve the warehouse till presenting the show. Looks like that they will be going back to the drawing board. I think though people are under estimating the trio, we've got other car shows and Top Gear only kept Clarkson. Out of all those people they may know more about cars or have racing experience, including international versions - it simply isn't the same without the trio. Having worked in many places, characters like them are rare especially these days. Like them or not characters make up the show, the previous ones were.. shall we say boring and didn't give any emotion. Fifth gear tried to be kinda like Top Gear but just doesn't feel like it. @pcstru Sorry but I completely do not agree with your statement about waking up. I could respond in the exact same way, people need to wake up and realize why so many signed it. Some were happy to ignore the assault, others wanted him punished but not sacked. ME, I simply did it because I had a real strong feeling he would be sacked, I did it because I wanted the petition numbers to go high to show everyone he is popular. I for one have said this before and I know many have – He deserves to be punished. What is interesting though people who complain about us, don't mention much about the actual victim or what he wants. It doesn't matter about us 1million or people who don't like Jeremy. What actually does matter is the victim.
