Hello, I just wanted to add a quick post to put myself out there offering a hand to anyone who needs it. I've been working within a secondary school for coming up to a year and notice the lack of support for IT Technicians regarding school websites or web based systems. My background is working as a developer, and have extensive experience in the field that I will always be happy to offer a hand in. I can help with issues related to CSS, JavaScript, WordPress, APIs, Integrations, OAuth, Azure, Databases and much more. Any issues you have fire a message below, or drop me a private message and I'll try my best to get back to you quickly

Hi all, I *may* have landed myself a nice little job developing a CMS for somebody, however I've not done it before so was looking for some pointers from those of you that have. Based on what I've read here, I've set my initial fee at £200 for a CMS with up to 5 pages, with each additional page costing £20. I was thinking about a £25 flat rate for any changes in design after the initial setup (thought about giving a 1 week "cooling off" period where I'd do things like that for free - good idea?) Hosting will be provided by a reputable host; I'll recommend three (they'll want that for their VFM forms) and arrange for them to pay the host directly and pass on the login details to me. So far so good? Also, I was wondering if anybody could share any insight as to obstacles I may not have thought of? Is there a kind of generic service contract out there I can use as a basis to draw up my own contract? Appreciate any and all help!

Teams is the absolute worst showing Microsoft has and displays a dangerous lack of caring for end users and managment. The client has always been a bag of hammers, 'conveniently' designed to run on a browser framework inside a container, inside an OS, inside an app container guaranteed to be slow on anything but a fresh new pc... That needs to update, as each individual user every 30 days or it will give them a 'you must upgrade' prompt with no button to fix it. The new AppX one has been around for some time now and is still unable to detect a computer in presentation mode, or focus mode and will helpfully spew chat notifications on screen while projecting to a wireless display. Sure you can go into options and manually turn it off, but that is the only option. No shortcut, nothing. In the past Microsoft at least had the decency to release an API so if they forgot something, or could not be bothered, you could script it or make a plug-in via the API. No such luck now, they really don't care, whoever is running the Teams development needs to be re-educated heavily by sysadmins from education and corporate alike for their complete lack of care in this regard. If you are not going to fix two year old feature requests then at least have an API to allow someone else to patch over your incompetence.

Hi guys Ive taken over the role of organizing and developing the school website. Im wanting to get us away from our current hosting company as they are trying to rip us off, the problem with this is that i will need to provide an alternative to them and for less money. I am thinking wordpress.com but i have one issue that needs to be overcome before it is really viable, that is password protected pages. Currently the password when entered is stored in the cookies for 10 days, i need it to clear after a moment or two but that seems to be an option reserved for wordpress.org. Is there a way around this or a plugin that will give me the functionality i need.

I think anyone can sign up for this; I'm signed in through my Hotmail account, which was the account that my MCSA is against, so perhaps that's why I have access, but it looks like it's open to everyone. Microsoft Virtual Academy - Know It. Prove It. is a bunch of free courses on MS stuff to do through February. It has courses like Mobile Development and Game Development, but of more relevant interest is the Identity & Access Management course, which covers AD, PKI, Powershell, defence in depth and a bunch of Server 2012R2 stuff. There's also an Office 365 course and a Sharepoint course amongst others. It looks to be pretty in-depth - someone in the forum there mentioned a challenge taking 30 hours - so it's a decent chunk of up to date training for free. Suits me! EDIT: $technician has just tried with the Hotmail account he set up when he was 12 and it's let him in, so it's free and open to all. Result!

Okay, it's in beta, but I am absolutely stunned with the quality of this little app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aide.ui&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5haWRlLnVpIl0. Been playing with it on the train to and from work on my tablet (keyboard's pretty much an essential, but honestly I'd buy one just for this if I didn't have one already) and it is stunning. None of that setting up Eclipse, and the SDK, and a virtual Android device (or connecting your actual one via USB). Just install, run, develop, compile, test, repeat. Okay so it's no Visual Studio 2010, but for hobbyist development (or even larger projects if you want to do some work on the road) it's amazing. Seems to be built by hobbyists/enthusiasts rather than a business, so hopefully it'll stay free.

Can anyone recommend some software that will allow children around 9 years old to make a game, preferably a 2D platform type game where you can import your own graphics etc... and then export it as Flash so anyone can play it??? Help would be appreciated very much!

Hey Everyone, I've been developing an open source inventory system for schools that strips out all the unused junk from an expensive inventory system and keeps things basic and organised. It's still in Alpha at present, but will be putting it out for Beta in the upcoming weeks. So far it will do: Bulk Imports of ICT Equipment Individual imports Warranty Monitoring and alerts Note taking on individual machines Simple Scan item Show data, quickly. Admin control panel to manage user logins to the system, database admin etc. The data stored includes: Serial Number Make Model Purchase Date Purchased From (Company you purchased through, with invoice data) Warranty Start Date (If different to purchase date) Warranty Length (with countdown) Warranty Name/Type (Accidental Damage, NBD etc) I chose all these as these are the most commonly used by all technicians around schools. Working with people who script in powershell, we are exploring secure and reliable ways to import data from machines already out in your schools and unlike spiceworks, be quick about it. The sole reason I've done this is for speed. Spiceworks is a fantastic system which I have little trouble with, but it does seem to be a little over developed for the needs of some of the smaller schools. The idea is to take the experience from people who work in the ICT departments of schools and colleges and develop a bespoke, free system, that requires no flash, no shockwave, java etc. Simple Html 5, CSS 3 and some bog standard programming. It's developed in Classic ASP which puts many off, but its a complete language, supported on all latest windows o/s's, plugs into IIS magically and no update for it is going to come along and break it. It's also extremely quick and is running with the latest SQL Express 2012 database. I'm looking for people who want to try it out, aid me in the development, throw ideas at me. At the end of the day, if you are fed up of your current inventory solution and would like a simple one that requires no additional resources on your computer to run, then this might be for you, so help me help you. There's been plenty developed as open source before, but people have different needs. If you want bog standard, why do you need to install all the features, the majority of which you are never going to use. I've designed the whole site in a modular method, you add the features you will use and never install those you won't. It's essentially a sober version of spiceworks, just developed by one guy lol. I'll be posting screenshots in the next few weeks (graphically it needs tidying up) and i'll progress from there. What I would like are more ideas. If you got a new set of laptops, what data would you like stored about them? Would you like what O/S is installed, Software? or are you more specific on the hardware, Maybe RAM amounts etc. The trick is to find what data technicians need and then data that they want. Those we need, will come pre-installed, those people want, i'll create as an option, which can be added by the administrator of the system. If you receive a broken laptop and you scan it, what data do you need to jump out at you. Would you like the option to choose what data jumps out at you before you scan it in? (e.g Click Serial, Scan and it comes up with all data with the serial key highlighted for you) Everything is possible. So far it works in all resolutions between 800x600 to 1920x1080, in IE8+, Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera. What do you guys think, would anyone be willing to help out during Beta also.

Hi! We have used games such as Shattered Crystal and The flying Carpet successfully in school for years now but with the progression of operating systems, hardware etc... they are no longer working. Not only that they are a little dated now. Does anyone know of any similar or even better software than those for developing cognitive thinking skills? We would be very grateful for any help!

Hi, I'm a software engineer with a few (*cough*) years experience. I've not developed software for education before, but it's an area I'd like to move into, if possible. Ideally I'd like to develop software for the education industry for myself, but that's a dream away at the moment. But, saying that, I'd like to start somewhere. So, is there some software that you believe is needed, or is missing some sort of functionality from the education environment? Something I could develop for free that would 'show my skills'? Obviously I'd like to make a competitor for SIMS, but that's too big to develop at the moment. Pretty happy with C#,C,C++, ASP.NET, PHP, MS SQL, etc.. Though I do prefer locally hosted information systems, rather than 'cloudy' things (showing my age now). Also happy to offer with anything else someone is working on, or offer advice. Any suggestions, please let me know. Cheers

I would like a web-based printer monitor. Looks like SNMP is the best method to use, but I've not used it before. Most of our printers are HP, but we have a few Dell's and some photocopiers. Anyone know of any good guides for SNMP noobs? Any good resources for help programming my own monitor? (PHP/Perl preferrable). Thanks.
