Yeap, we went 1gig as in many rooms the old phones used an rj11 so we had to borrow the PC socket. This made the phone system upgrade wayyyyyy cheaper than getting people out to install new rj45 in 20 odd offices. ((as long as you have POE+))

ok, macs 10.7.x they are using active directory directly. I want to share a folder via the synology DS218+ I have setup a shared folder with ACLs for a security group (dp) but the mac doesn't seem to pass that info on. What should I do?

I see the Steam Link (maybe in response to this and the Microsoft thing) is allowing over the internet gaming now. I'm going to brush off my old £17 steamlink box and bring it to work

is there a way on server 2012+ to leave notes about the server (to yourself, or others). I've just disabled the variable windows extension for tftp for the wds workaround. At the moment I make a blank text doc with the note as the file name on the desktop, is there a better way built in?

I couldn't image new clients today and after fumbling for over an hour with everything from BIOS settings to switch packet sizes, it turns out it was a security update. The KB4489881 went in on the 14th (march 2019) and has now stopped my clients loading the boot installer. The client would get 10% into loading then claim that the resource was unavailable. I've uninstalled this update rollup and WDS works fine again. Server2012r2 Anything I should do?

I put in the server version of the AV program and accept the defaults.

LTSC can't have ANY store apps. So no edge. ((upcoming edgeium)) will be welcome. Plus the video editor another store app is quite good for our Multimedia lessons. I was tempted to use an LTSC2019 / office 2019, chrome combo. Probably wouldn't need to touch it for 3 years

I currently use NOD32 antivirus in my Win 8.1 environment and have been happy with it. BUT it costs real money about £1200 a year. I'm thinking that I'll just roll out Windows 10 with defender, The PCs are all locked down have LAPS and the users are running with standard privileges. I loose central reporting but I can't think of a real issue. Anyway sanity check from people here?

As stated above, you can purchase usb headsets for £9.99 now. I'm moving to this going forward, we are using some Logitech headsets (£24) for our digital scribe pupils. Flex Mic, metal bands. https://www.amazon.co.uk/EasySMX-Surround-Headphone-Over-Ear-Isolation/dp/B07JGJDXFQ/ref=sr_1_47?ie=UTF8&qid=1552320725&sr=8-47&keywords=usb+headset EXAMPLE, not a recommendation

If I were FORCED to allow a BYOD I'd insist on a Meraki Solution, not only can you isolate guest traffic at the AP but each AP can NAT, or and this is the big one... it can setup a VPN between the AP and the firewall. This ensuring that guest traffic can't hop a vlan and extricate other network data. Belt and braces I know but this is how I'd do it.

We've gotten around this issue by putting the speakers sound through the projector, so the teacher can adjust the volume through the projector remote (less likely to get lost) We just leave the speakers always on with a set volume. -

SAME, they come with the wall brackets as well, the new models have an infrared remote. They're loud and clear (not boomy) they were a godsend when we were still using mono vhs tapes from the 90's I pay £59 plus VAT from Hugh Symmons. -
Anyone else here used LAPS (Local Admin Password Service)?
chazzy2501 replied to phreak's topic in Windows
ok, using the LAPS ui, I can see the password and expire time. BUT I has only set the default admin, not the 2 other admin accounts that are created when I made the image. (the one for the image and the one when I deploy) I'll see if I can delete them using GPP. The local admin is disabled anyhow? -

update: I can see the fields in the ADSI editor but not active directory. How come? is this expected? -

thank @phreak, reading the documentation in the GPO the default admin account is identified by it's SID so it can automatically detect it even if you've changed the name. I had to load the active directory module before my PowerShell would work with the instructions... (so not a permission error at btw) Also it doesn't mention that you need to dig into your local policydefs to copy them over to your policy store! questions: I added the self write permissions to the highest OU, I assume that all OUs below this will allow the PCs within them to get the required perms? I did check that domain admins has the rights to see the extended attributes but I can't see them in AD extended attributes? Does the software have run before those fields appear? I expected to see them but empty. -

having trouble early, I've installed the laps on my workstation with extras. I've opened PowerShell as admin and imported the module, when I go to update-admpwdschema is says I have insufficient access rights. (I'm running as a domain admin but I've also added myself as a schema admin in case) I'm just running PowerShell on my desktop does it have to be a special active directory PowerShell? (like exchange) -
ok, the newly patched msi is sitting in the new share with a bunch of folders but it installs (by hand) nicely on my PC... But now the customization wizard is complaining that there is no setup.ini.. can I make the customisation on the downloaded msi and then place it with the network deployed msi later?
-
thanks, missed a step there I guess I've got to force a re-deploy in the GPO.. EDIT: Nevermind I'm doing a clean version in a new share with a new MST:)
