  1. is this a zombie thread? anyhow, Twit, windows weekly, security now, framerate, macbreak weekly (sometimes)
  2. Unexpectedly my staff print from home using direct access (M$ zero touch VPN) I guess this is some work though. Some MFP like our sharps MX2600N's will accept print via email. There are some parameters you can put in the body of the email to set functions like how many copies.
  3. I have a few HP 800s that do this, they only work once, if you shutdown it'll never turn on again unless removed from the mains. I toyed with S modes and fast start but nothing.
  4. I've been deploying 1809 for the long support cycle, I'm actually at a loss as to what happens when they fall out of support. I'm just going to see what people here on edugeek grumble about and follow that:)
  5. Won't it be removed from Windows in 2020 anyway? Get used to it being gone. Hurrah..
  6. I tell the pupils they can change their passwords on the school computers using ctrl+alt+del.
  7. Wix tech support are telling me that I need to add an "a record" pointing my domain "beaminster.dorset.sch.uk" to point at the wix ip.. I have for a long time had a cname record pointing the address "www.beaminster.dorset.sch.uk" to wix, I thought that should be enough... I'm almost certain that if I did create the "a record" they request all other internet addresses (the non www ones) would break. This they tell me is why the TLS cert no longer works. (although it had worked for over a year prior to this)
  8. Hey I've got a new san and server combo. The 2 hosts are 2x10gbit each (lan) and the san is 4x 12gbit sas (2 to each host) I've added the new 10gig adapters to the Lan vswitch and kept an 1gig adapter in setup as standby. I've done a crystaldiskmark on the vms and the speed is amazing at over 3000MB/s I was testing file transfer by sending a 12GB ISO via SMB from one VM to the other but the transfer caps out at 1.6Gbit? is this expected, what should I look for?
  9. why not just use a portable hotspot? Like this example: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Huawei-E5330-3G-Unlocked-Configuration-Required/dp/B00INXBW3U/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=portable+hotspot&qid=1566469297&s=gateway&sr=8-3
  10. you could also setup a scheduled task to trigger after a period of inactivity then tell it to run something like "rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation" (this works great) but tasks can be deployed via GPP. Also for bonus points the task can be setup to run only with certain user groups, or when certain networks are available. (so only at work not at home, or when teachers not slt) super handy.
  11. I assume it does but how would I check
  12. I'm still rocking the 2003 forest and domain functionality. I was thinking of just raising them, do I go Forest then domain.. Does it matter? All 2012r2 DCs and a few 2008r2 members and 1 2008 server. Any troubles I should check for first?
  13. argh! This is butt clenching annoying. Adding a new printer (from word) in Windows 10 does this annoying rolling dot animation for a minute shows an irrelevant printer and thats it. FU. it also shows the same not available, not installed printer 5 times argh. The old style of search AD and select was faster and more intuitive ((M$, oh my goodness it works so well and is simple... lets change it)).... How do I enable that version for staff... I've accidentally done this for pupils, when the modern one opens it immediately closes and show the old style ad select style...
  14. OK, where do I get this software from and how do I use it? I'm looking on the service portal...
  15. yes, you'll create a schoolname.onmicrosoft.com at first on the o365 side. Later you'll add your school domain to o365 (using .txt on your domain) then you can switch to your domain as primary later. For testing though you can start now! for some places like the sharepoints etc, the onmicrosoft domain name will show up so pick wisely.
  16. Don't you need RM Unifi to use the "user based filtering"?
  17. This is probably more interesting if you don't have RM Unifi. We currently use the staffproxy.swgfl.org.uk and use the staffproxy login page etc. But that stops embedded youtube etc. from working. so… sslfilter.policy1.proxy.swgfl.org.uk policy2 etc. you can apply different filters to each and custom filter lists as well. This finally means I can setup separate proxies for Staff, Admin, 6th form and pupils. No additional logins and working embedded youtube. It's also mean I can see youtube videos here on edugeek at last! They also offer ip address range filtering as well if you're using the transparent filter.
  18. What is going to happen to the remix3d stuff built into to office 2019?
  19. I've been switching devices over to UEFI and updating the BIOSes of those that don't, to support it. I'm doing this with the move to Windows 10. Really its so you can have the little manufacture logo whilst it's booting. I don't use TPM features, I don't encrypt the local drives but the option is there if I change my mind. It is possible to switch from legacy to uefi without reinstalling Windows. There is a script you run before shutting down Windows and switching in the BIOS.
  20. btw I've worked with this router a lot (PlusNet one) I have one for testing here at work and one at home. The Wi-Fi and ethernet are firewalled from each other (even when it is disabled) this stops file sharing SMB over Wi-Fi dead and you can't do a thing about it! It also stopped my unify security cameras from connecting to the unify NVR. Horrible little thing.
  21. I've tried this today and I get the same error. (as I use the old format) \\fileserv1\students\13\%username% changing to \\fileserv1\students\13\%username%\mydocs worked fine. BUT then I deleted the folders and started from scratch. it failed complaining about intermediate folders. I was going to move to this model next year.
  22. you can do an in place upgrade to 2012 mine only took 40 minutes.
  23. This should work. Being daft are you adding the trailing backslash? \\servername\share\%username%\Documents\ EDIT: trailing backslash disappeared in example?
  24. how about a few of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Imation-Disc-Stakka-100-Disc-Carousal-CD-DVD-Management-Stakable-Single-Unit/264273343812?hash=item3d87eb3544:g:18MAAOSwqkRcFUs4
  25. The cool news is you don't even need an adapter you really can just cut or melt the back of the slot out of the way and insert a full size card. (some x8 slots are open ended anyway) You'll see no perceivable speed reduction, as an SLI user both my cards run at x8 anyway. You'll find that although say the Nvidia 1030GT uses a full sized PCIE x16 sized slot it actually only runs at PCIE x4! (btw if you buy that card get the gddr5 version) EDITED to add point
