yes, exactly as you say. You'll need drivers to see the drive, go to the laptops support page and download and extract the drivers to a usb stick. During the install of windows you can insert the usb stick and point to it for the HDD drivers. Installing in IDE mode will work fine but at a slight performance loss. Might I also recommend that you update the BIOS on the laptops BEFORE you install Windows (nice but not necessary) EDIT: you can install Windows10 Pro on these laptops if you wish, the windows 7 key will activate the product. (just ensure you use the same sku. e.g home for home pro for pro)

I just purchased the sunbow de-sb x3 240gb drives from Amazon for £15.09 each (19.09 with VAT) Slow for an SSD but blazing compared to the drives coming out. We have Lenovo 2nd gen i5 M92 PCs but I think the refurbish supplier put older HDDs in them. anyhow here is the sunbow vs the wd3200JS

You've gotten off lighter than I did, due to my firewall settings when my cert expired ALL laptops refused to work on the domain and GPO updates were impossible! laptops thought they were on a guest network so firewall was on full! I wrote a warning about this a while ago

XP embedded has a green loading (not blue) bar and usually says "embedded" or a nostalgic play

I've used the xyz junior a few years ago, for a few days and that was cheap and affordable (even with locked down filament) A lot of prints would curl, (gluestick fixed that though) the old blue tape helped. I guess I'll start with a phone case again. Pi4b sounds cool, I was looking at the £35 model for a mame project. (I only want 8/16bit era stuff) I really want to try the old nut and bolt print just to see how well they mesh.

OK a bit late to the party, I've always wanted a 3d printer but it's always hard to know where to jump in. Always wanted a cool delta style printer and they're affordable now. So many build your own kits etc. every £50 gets you a better and better printer. (it's like building a PC) anyhow I've bought the AnyCubic Mega-S https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07JN7HFYS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 There may be better options (there always is) but it checked most boxes and I am fed up of being stuck with indecision. Anyhow anyone here got some cool first prints, I should try.

Having used the unifi I can recommend you just get a cheapo Sannce Vision system. Cheap analogue system with a quick easy internet app that can use cloud or direct logins with no issues. I have one of these and it great for less than a £100! all in.

sometime the AV goes wild if the disc has annoying stuff on it, this with the VLC then the teacher hammering the play button. This stops the DVD from playing. I've had to train my teachers to not immediately try and play a DVD after inserting it. Also HDMI, some DVDs get funny if you have a second monitor that IS HDCP compliant and you have the desktop duplicated!

Minecraft Education - How do you deploy?
chazzy2501 replied to DCUK6's topic in Educational Software
I have both the older appxbundle installer with the .bat and this .msi based one, which to deploy? -
There is the rumoured windows lite coming, their chromebook reply.

basic things I remember, set the PDC to use an external NTP source, (I use the RM one ntp.swgfl.ifl.net) but there are others especially do this if you use a VM (as they can't keep time). You can specify a time server in DHCP option 42, this is nice if you haven't domained a PC (and other non-MS devices)

looking for new rackmount UPS (vmware friendly)
chazzy2501 replied to chazzy2501's topic in Hardware
@bald_pig the dual ups doesn't always help, a few years ago, I had a server PSU let go and it tripped the UPS and damaged devices connected to the same UPS. The UPS is setup to protect you from the mains but not the devices from each other. (at least not my APC SUA2200R) The UPS happily came back though, I lost a switch and the server powered off (even though the 2nd UPS was fine) I guess the PSU failure was too large. (HP ml350 G8) I guess no UPS solution could prevent that, I suppose. -
my APCs 2200 x2 are over 15 years old and I'm worried that they will eventually die (5th set of batteries). I was looking to go smaller so just one UPS and maybe just 1800ish (as together they used to run 13 physical servers) It'd have to run 2 servers and 1 san. (one psu of each device mains direct & one to the new UPS) Really my big ask is one that integrates easily with VMware. (the less SSH the better)

[1809, ou] WiFi not automatically reconnecting on boot
chazzy2501 replied to Cat_Jam148's topic in Windows 10
some adapters have an option to not connect if you have a lan connection, are the laptops on ethernet during testing? -
I've had a few issues capturing and in the end I find it best to log in as a local user, delete all the roaming profiles from my domain accounts, then capture.

I was on here just last week moaning that in an exam with 8 pupils 4 had issues.

Holy Moley, the licensing is crazy expensive these days, this is now over £5.5k for me. each fte (which now includes a .5 fte count for cleaning staff etc.) more than £48 per FTE this is starting to hurt. At this rate our school would be paying Microsoft over £60,000 in the next ten years.

not saying I free time but:

Yes, this is the one to get. I have this beast and it paid for its self. no more batches of 5 cans. This little beast has a 500Watt motor and with the reducing nozzle shown its like an air laser that speeds the air up even faster. It shifts dust from even old crusty AMD A8 CPU blocks with tiny fins and that greasy fluff that is strangly heavy.

Disable Fast Startup Power Management option via GPO

I don't deserve a WD SSD but I'll take any old x58 motherboards you have lying around

[1809, ou] Pupils getting a black desktop upon login. 1809edu
chazzy2501 replied to chazzy2501's topic in Windows 10
sorry, no follow up but this is happening on our windows 8.1 machines as well with different hardware and obviously from a different image. I'm using ESET 7.0 and 7.1 Antivirus anyone else? (that or our sharp printers) I'm not using roaming profiles, and I'm not relocating appdata. I do have a lot of firewall rules on the older 8.1 but windows 10 is pretty clean with default rules. I've found that if you wait 3 minutes the desktop clears, these are SSD based machines though. -
most of my laptops have an Centrino Ultimate N 6300 that does indeed support 3x3 https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/59474/intel-centrino-ultimate-n-6300-dual-band.html some do have the 6020 though. EDIT: I did upgrade a single 640 G1 to an Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 a 2x2 AC card, it connected at a higher speed but transferred files at identical speeds. (single AP used, same laptop) This may improve though if many laptops were using it.
