  1. As I kit out our school with refurb laptops there are no Wi-Fi AC clients, this is why I've opted for the AC Pro as it has a stronger 2.4ghz offering. 3x3 vs 2x2 also a lot of "value" devices still only operate at 2.4ghz @mavhc you can limit an APs output instead of shielding a room I have the facebook wifi for our 6th form at just 3db so it only works in the common room and is suppressed by the walls. (Meraki device though) That and the pupils don't complain that they can taste metal as they walk by it jk
  2. I don't believe so, the teachers name is also written on the laptop (with a sticker) and their name and email is already available to anyone with access to the GAL. (or ad search) but not their first name.
  3. I noticed about 4 years ago that 14" laptops were becoming far more popular. This translates to having far more available in the refurb market. I've been using EliteBook 8460p and now the 640g1 as they are a bargain piece of kit. I'm worried that after the 640g1's I'll have to pick laptops that do not support the old HP dock format and have no ODD...
  4. This terrible software is just a pain. From anyone who's had to install it and create shortcuts to the public profile user area, to the old version that needed a portable sql client and .net3.5 with it. The software today had 4 errors in an exam, this is in a room of 8 candidates. It takes over 20 seconds before any feedback is provided when you run the program, (so many pupils ended up loading it twice) This is especially nice as one instatnce will eventually load full screen so you can't clear the other. We had the software say that the pupils code was invalid only to accept it if you tried accept again. (no new inputs, verified myself) (this on two clients) We had 4 clients load with no progress bar for over 4 minutes with 2 coming back with an 815 error "index was out of bounds of the array" The other 2 we moved to other PCs as it wouldn't clear. (wasn't sure if the session was started or not)
  5. room PCs are rm+no so lrc01 or a301 or n202 so thats a3+01 not 301 but no room has more than 99 PCs personal laptops have their users name: ssmith
  6. I've been pointing staff to use "office sway", it super easy and has cc images etc. They can use via o365 logins. save and share and edit all online like wix. templates like blog etc. Great stuff and easy enough for teachers to oversee. better link if you have office 365: https://www.office.com/launch/sway?auth=2
  7. hum, we have a mix of boards here: so.... I can't use it?! Our laptops roam from room to romm so with somewith other brands. I've been moving people to powerpoint anyway.
  8. Beach Body Toddy edit: smaller rotated pic
  9. PowerPoint now has screen recording built in.
  10. 1, NVR and cameras had incompatible firmware so wouldn't talk. 2, NVR auto update can't work through a proxy but doesn't say that so falsely clamed to be up to date. (wasted half a day on that) 3, NVR auto update fails (when on a standard network) a problem discoverd in the forums over a month prior. (no plans to fix this but had a hack using ssh) 4, NVR installing putty to execute a script to allow 64bit something to work on the NVR and allow the updates to work again. (after finding the hidden allow ssh in local login) 5, A G3 Pro failed its firmware update and became unusable, another use of putty and (new to me) pscp to transfer via SSH a new firmware. (sarcastic unifi forums unhelpful here) had to use a 3rd party forum to get that fix. 6, User registration HAS to use full Google Chrome, no other browser will work. 7, You have to use Google Chrome (no other browser works, at all) 8, The app allows to to register a new account but NOT associate with an NVR (end up making all users accounts for site staff on a domestic laptop with chrome) Great hardware , poor software, worse support. This is NOT an enterprise class bit of kit and is far too complex for the average user. I don't know who it is for.
  11. I think in the end I gave up on hardware ID's as it comes up as a generic USB storage device. I limited USB to write only, then no one used them so I disabled usb again. I think they have Bluetooth so you might be able to use laptops instead.
  12. I've just setup a unifi G3 pro setup, with 3 cameras and the 2tb NVR and I can say that it was an extreme pain in the butt, please avoid.
  13. I bought the AP AC PRO over the nanoHD wave2 as I still have mostly N wifi laptops, 2.4ghz is still has better range, the AC PRO offers 450Mbps or triple antennas but the nano offer only 2 for the older standard.
  14. I'm getting pupils with black screens after login, the mouse is visible and ctrl+alt+del works and they can log out. The win+ctrl+shift+b doesn't fix the issue either... I can move the pupils and the problem doesn't follow them. I'm using eset 7.01 av if that might be an issue and these PCs have the A8 6550d APU (amd graphics.) This is happeningto 4 or 5 pupils a lesson... I'm not sure how to tackle the issue.
  15. I've been using our laser cutter for years to security mark the laptops (school logo), but for marking I just use a fat permanent marker, it lasts ages and with the right cleaner can be removed. Also easy to touch up.
  16. Doesn't Edge store web credentials in the credential manager? How configurable is the credential manager?
  17. I've been quoted a Huawei OceanStor 2200 v3, 16TB, for £11k this is ONLY a few grand more than spinning storage from HP or Dell (emc2) 9 vs 11. I'm super tempted at the idea of having full SSD storage but I wonder how solid the device will be and what the support will be like. NEED MORE INPUT
  18. You know about the control - right click for test options on the outlook icon?
  19. Whilst doing my usual stumble on the HP website for new drivers, I found this handy page that I'd wish I'd found years ago. For those who don't know, HP do a driver collection for your device that they certify to work on your version of Windows. So I'm now downloading a 550MB driver package for my HP 640 G1 laptops that are for Windows 10 1809! This will help my WDS deploy! https://ftp.hp.com/pub/caps-softpaq/cmit/HP_Driverpack_Matrix_x64.html I found this under the SCCM stuff (which I don't use, so never looked) Pity the 8460p is aged out (I'll have to manually search for win10 drivers still)
  20. Yes, I just purchased a licence for my Gen10 server so it can email me if there is a hardware fault. The Gen8 and Gen6 machines work through ie just fine on the free license. (of course, you have to plug the ilo port in first
  21. I give the head a regular mailbox but then add the head@ alias to their account. When the head changes, I remove the alias from one account and move it to the other.
  22. We are now in a position where were disposing of laptops that have old 64GB SSDs. (Windows 8.1 eats it up) I thought I'd raid 6 drives up in an old gaming PC to see what they could do and I was quite surprised at the half a MVME style performance. (a 335GB drive) This is on a Pentium Anniversary Edition using a Z97 board, using the firmware raid Intel style. speeeed, each drive alone is good for 240MB ish, so this is almost perfect scaling! The PC is peppy as anything I almost want to keep it. Skyrim flashes the loading screen as I reload a level, thats speed.
  23. SSD always, even if the ram runs low and it starts using the virtual ram, its on the MUCH faster SSD so the performance penalty is so much lower.
  24. DLP has some nice advantages its generally brighter as it doesn't filter away so much light producing the colours, the screen door effect is much lower (the gaps between the pixels) so the image has less blocked light (again). Also they generally don't have filters, so no termly filter duty! but dead pixels, funny colours, rainbow effect, green fizz (early dlp) They are much better now than they were.
  25. I found that our ESET AV was slowing logins down, it was my fault I'd made a small tweak and accidently turned on "scan mapped drives" in the policy default... erk!
