Hi everyone, I'm needing a new UPS for our main server. What do you use and recommend? Something that can automatically shutdown VM's and server down properly and reboot once power returns would be welcome. Thankyou.

Hi everyone, I bought a Samsung 32 inch EH5300 Smart LED Tv. The place where I live, I experience a lot of unexpected power failures and power fluctuations. So I thought of buying a UPS. My doubts/questions are as follows. 1. Can I use the normal computer UPS for tv? 2. Does the UPS act like a stabilizer(eg: support on high and low voltage and provide a stable power output to the tv)? 3.Does the UPS output waveform affect the tv internals ? 4. When I have power supply working fine does the the current go direct or through from the battery to the tv? 5. Is there a option like. there are 4 sockets in UPS, if I connect on one socket the power comes from battery and in another the power comes direct? Thank you very much for your time.

I have a question for Phil or Andy with regards to power protection. The 7110 SAN is being powered though a UPS and direct mains, the question I have is in the event of power outage the SAN will have a sudden power loss. The servers accessing the disks should have powered down before this happens so disk access will be nonexistent but is this good for the SAN? Should an agent be loaded onto the SAN to do a graceful shutdown? I currently have APC UPS's with the network management card and the switch protected but the UPS also! Any advice or guides much appreciated. Thanks, Rob

The battery on our APC Smart 1500 has died. Whilst researching replacement costs, I noticed that a completely new UPS could be had for a fraction of the cost of an APC battery. I contacted the LEA who said that they don't normally replace batteries, and replace the whole unit - recommending that we get one of at least 750VA (it attaches to one Poweredge server and an Avantis CD Server, the latter not being critical). Missing the point that I'm trying to save some money, their recommended (APC) replacement costs more than double the price of a new battery! So, has anyone got any experience of Plexus? It's £20 for a 1000VA UPS. Or should I not be so tight and get a replacement battery?

Hello, I'm wondering how people have configured their VM's in ESX to shutdown in an event of a power failure? Since I've got the Network Shutdown option for my UPS server I could install the client agent in each machine and configure it that way and also install it on the ESX Physical Host as well. The other method which might be best is to use the inbuilt system in ESX to automatically startup and shutdown machines. Has anybody used this? Thanks, Rob

Hey All, Just wanted to check if it would be a problem, basically bought this big UPS that's going to help power some of the servers. It requires however a hardwired connection into the back so Positive, Ground, Neutral wires to be stripped and the screwed into the back. Is there anything wrong with me using a Kettle Lead, stripping it and just wiring it in myself, plugging it into a UK 3 Pin Socket or is this a fire hazard etc...? Maybe I'm being dumb but thought it was worth the ask Thanks All

Hi, We have three new eaton power supplies arriving next week (our old ones are way out of warranty so basically got told to do a full replace). One ups is repacing our backup server which is fine. The other 2 are going into our main server cabinet, i had a look today and realised 4 of the ports wasn't being used but they were plugged in across the ups's. We have a dell vtrx with 4 power supplies in it, some other server which is on but don't know what its used for. Would you recommend i keep the current setup with 2 UPS in one cabinet or put one in the server cabinet and one in the other cabinet? (the other cabinet has our main aruba switch and our nvr) The new ups are EATON 5SC 2200VA TOWER / RACK 2U UPS Thanks

Hi All, Hope everyone is having a good start to their week! I am looking at replacing our old UPS (APC SMT2200RM12U) which only has a runtime of about less than 15 minutes as I tested it the other day. Can anyone recommend a good UPS which they are currently using at their school? I need 8 output connection UPS. I would really appreciate if you could share: Brand and model, Run time for load Output connections Many Thanks for your help! Shoaib

Hi all, Hope everyone is well. We have a few Eaton 5PX UPS devices at our site. We have been overhauling our UPS provision recently and making sure things are ship shape. We have updated the NICs in these to the latest firmware and have started updating the actual UPS firmware too. We have some units that are on firmware version 02 - probably what they shipped with in 2012. The latest version is 14. We are using Eaton SetUPS to update the firmware. The instructions say that with the UPS off, apply the firmware update. The UPS should click and reboot in to a bootloader where the firmware updates, the lights on the front should flash, then we should restart the UPS to complete the process. This was successful one one unit, however on all the devices running version 02, the UPS clicks off but does not reboot in to the bootloader - we have to remove mains, disconnect the battery, then power it all back up again to bring it to life where it says it's still running version 02. Does anyone have experience with these? Is it likely that the jump between 02 and 14 is too high and we need to get an intermediate version before trying to go to 14? We are working offsite so I cannot test this at the moment, but I thought I would ask the group just incase someone can give a definitive answer! Thanks, Stephen

All I have an interesting problem that I thought I had solved, but after a couple of test runs, it turns out I haven't. So here is my problem any ideas on a solution would greatly be received. - I have a 3 node MS cluster, supporting 15 vm's - 1 APC UPS supporting the 3 node MS cluster and APC's Network Shutdown software In the event of a shutdown event I would like to shutdown the vm's before the hosts. I have tried writing a script that gets fired when the host system log records a 1074 ID (Shutdown Request from "shutdown.exe -f -s -t 00"). However, this script gets ignored or gets bypassed as the server performs an automated shutdown. This then leads to the vm's within the cluster either being in a failed or critical state. As I said any ideas on how to get the vm's to close first would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. We'd like to purchase a UPS for our servers. We have two of these, both HP Proliant ML-310 (Spec sheets here) According to that page, I think they are rated at 410W each. We'd like a UPS that would allow us enough time for some sort of automated shut-down (so we'd also need the relevant software). Anyone recommend anything? Cheers Martin

my APCs 2200 x2 are over 15 years old and I'm worried that they will eventually die (5th set of batteries). I was looking to go smaller so just one UPS and maybe just 1800ish (as together they used to run 13 physical servers) It'd have to run 2 servers and 1 san. (one psu of each device mains direct & one to the new UPS) Really my big ask is one that integrates easily with VMware. (the less SSH the better)

Morning All, I'm soon to be looking for two new UPS devices to backup our power - following a major issue on Monday. What UPS are people purchasing? Ideally ones that come with sofware that shut down Virtual Machines/HyperV servers and restart them when the power is back on (is that possible?) Cheers Gareth

Hi All, Can anyone give me a rough guide as to how many servers I can have running on a single APC 1000 smart UPS? Currently I have two servers sat on it running fine but would also like to add our new Dell server to it (and it has 2 psu's for redundancy).
-
We have an APC Smart UPS which currently is failing to run it's self test, when running via the control panel on the UPS itself it refuses to run. When ran via PowerChute it runs for several hours and eventually fails. Does this sound like a failing battery? it still seems to be able to support a load Any help is greatly appreciated

I am posting this Thread in response to a previous thread that was posted over a decade ago now, hopefully we can solve any unanswered questions myself or any other users still have. Previous thread: "APC UPS clicking constantly" onto my question though, put bluntly, is it possible that the Clicking sound referred to in many cases across the web, is the sound of say, fan coil whine or fan resistance/ticking rather than switching onto battery (DC) mode constantly ? I ask this because, the conclusion to the thread i previously referred to which can be found on this site, ends in a grim scenario where a users opinion (probably on power grid in India) States that one should use voltage regulators with an APC ups to avoid malfunctions with your pcb board, or something of that nature...now, I own no such voltage regulators. Back to my original question, I simply wanted to state that there are several sounds being made by such equipment, and i find it Extremely difficult to identify which noise people are referring to when reading over the scenario and user experience online. With that being said... I experience a constant ticking noise on my own ups (A mercer ups controller within a custom built deep cycle battery enclosure) The noise can be described as an occasional occurrence of a constant ticking noise, not at all that loud and often will continue for some time. perhaps it can be describe further as a drawn out double tick noise, like: - "Tick-tick"-"Tick-tick"-"Tick-tick"-"Tick-tick", and so on. The "ticking" noise itself can be described further too, as it somewhat resembles the sound made by the wind up of a child's toy car. i also want to state that this sound doesn't resemble the sound of the ups clicking over to battery mode which i would describe as a much louder noise, more like a circuit breaker being thrown ;P I hope my descriptions have at least been beneficial to some. In conclusion i would like to ask if somebody could please assist with a diagnostic of the sound's root cause. Because quite frankly i think it would be wise to replace mercer ups box's fan and clean the cobwebs out, before playing with sensitivity, checking batteries & servicing. any feedback is appreciated. Thank's for reading.

Hi all, We have one of the bigger cabinet UPS systems and am in the process of setting it to ensure that it shuts down my machines gracefully in the event of a power cut. So having worked with APC's and Powerchute in the past I went to Riello's website and looked at what they have to offer in terms of UPS software. Now they seem to have multiple options of doing what I want to achieve and just wondered if anyone may have used these UPS's and could advise the way they found worked best, or if they employed multiple options. So they have a bit of software called Powershield. Which is where you go and connect it to the UPS over the network (the only connection to the UPS we have), they say that you install this software on every physical machine you have and in the event of a power issue the machine will look at the job list and (if battery low for instance) shut down or you can also get it to run a script. The way I see it you could in fact just have this installed on one machine, then get it to run a script that shuts down all the other machines. They also provide a Vm shutdown script to use for VM's and hosts. Issue there is that if the power comes back on the script is already running, and as there are a fair few systems to shutdown it could be an issue. The other issue with this software if we install it on every physical machine I would have to go and manually tweak the settings on each machine to get it to shutdown in a specific order. They also have a vSphere Management Assistant. A little Linux VMware that you can spin up and setup. The option go through and ask for your vm host details, any dependant vm's, if your DC's are physical/virtual and if you would like it to shut down any physical windows systems (which you would then need to put in credentials to allow it to do this). The route I am currently looking at taking is that I am going to have to use a script regardless as we have SAN's that will need ssh commands to shut down, as well as connecting to Managed PDU's to power off some network equipment. Then use the VMA's to shutdown the VM's and the rest of the physical machines can have the software installed on them. Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions or have used this Riello software and might know of any pitfalls I may face going with this multiple approach method. Thanks in advance!

Hi, We have a DELL Power edge 2900 with a few SCSI drives in it and an external USB hard drive for some backup. Could someone recommend a UPS that would be suitable for this machine? Since having new SCSI drives put in our old UPS can't handle the load anymore. J x

A couple of our APC UPSs have recently died, and while looking for replacements I've come across a rather well specced Delta Gaia UPS which is half the price of the equivalent capacity APC Smart-UPS. On paper the Delta looks to be higher spec than the APC (Double Conversion as opposed to Line Interactive (Unfortunately that's as far as my UPS knowledge goes)), but since I've not come across Delta Electronics before, and the price difference is so large I'm a little wary. Does anyone have any experience of Delta Gaia UPSs, or Delta Electronics in general? Or are there any reasons the Delta would be inferior to the APC?
