Same here, it's the only way it seems to clear the ghost connections.

I've used them quite a few times - just within the UK and had no problems at all. Reading various websites they always tend to get bad press but I can't fault them.

I've e-mailed you a few docs - I hope there useful.

I am looking forward to this option being made available via SLG in the not to distant future hopefully.

Windows 7 activation through a Smoothwall proxy
Sylv3r replied to Ric_'s topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We couldn't activate our Windows 2008 servers through or smoothwall box but added all the microsoft domains to the do not authenticate setting and it works. How ever it requires microsoft.com so I tend to add / remove this as and when required as I don't want to give a free reign to MSN messenger etc.- 24 replies

Any online music resources that might not be blocked?
Sylv3r replied to sidewinder's topic in General Chat
Free Music, Listen to Music Free - although I would hazard a guess this will be blocked as well. -
We have it installed on around 40 netbooks - much quicker than Vista would ever be. Comparable with XP I would think.

This is the UK partner for the Microsoft IT Academy. They should be able to help. Prodigy Systems Limited

How much data do you backup? I would think one of those USB HDD's would be quite slow to copy data across.

I've just purchased Yosemite Server Backup through a lot of positive recommendations here on the site. I haven't had a chance to setup and install it so I can't give you my views on it yet. Yosemite Server Backup Overview - BarracudaWare / Yosemite Technologies

I don't think the Kite mark is around anymore. I believe the ICT Mark is now part of the Self Review Framework. Becta Schools It's not something we currently have in place, but I am considering implementing it over the next few months.

Same here - we removed our ISP filtering and requested a 'clean' connection. All filtering is now governed in-house via the Smoothwall box.

Have a look at Welcome to your notable world | Evernote Corporation - it will do the job - I am tempted to start using it myself for a similar reason as you.

Fully repatched our our network cabinet in the Sixth Form block, was sick of the 3metre cables in place so all nice short 30CM's! Our internet has been down since 12:30 - due to ISP issues, which means I can't remote in from home to do some of the other jobs I wanted to get finished tonight. Wonder how many phonecalls / TXT's I get from staff tonight wanting to know why the can't check their e-mails!

Leaving BGFL
Sylv3r replied to Tricky_Dicky's topic in West Midlands Regional Broadband Consortium (WMnet)
If I am honest, you get quite a bit for your money, I am not sure what sort of service you are currently receiving but I would doubt you would be able to get value for money as welll as all of the above services from another provider for the same cost. Not to mention, the hassle of moving MX records etc to an alternative provider. As an aside, we currently pay around £19k for a 10MB connection (receive around 5MB) and web filtering - other than that we get little else. -
I'm sure my lack of cards was due to the Postman not working on a Sunday, I will no doubt have a sack load tomorrow.

Must be love - that must have taken bloody ages!

I've been told next Thursday for the one i've ordered. I agree wiith the availability problem, surely if the product is as good as they say it is the uptake would be huge from BETT especially with the end of the financial year looming.

Personally I tend to stick with the manufacturers own branded drives whilst the server is in warranty. Once the warranty period is over I'll stick whatever I want in it. I imagine there is too much finger pointing if something did go wrong and you weren't using their own parts.

We don't allow any access to Social networking sites for staff or students in school. We use to actively publish our school facebook and twitter page on our homepage, but after being left with little choice I have had to remove this. See news release from the Director of our LA. The following information was recently issued to all staff in Children and Young People's Services (copied here for schools' information): Use of Social Networking Sites As you might be aware, the County Council does not currently have a policy on the use of Social Networking Sites although we understand that this is currently under consideration. However, pending the introduction of a County Council policy, everybody should be very clear that Children and Young People's Services does not support the use of social networking sites as a suitable means of contact with children and young people due to the necessity to adhere to certain professional standards for some groups of staff and, importantly, some very significant safeguarding concerns. This is in line with guidance and recent comments from CEOP, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre - more guidance and information can be found on the CEOP site. Managers are requested to ensure that the use of sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc., for the distribution of information or for personal contact with children and young people is not permitted and any failure to comply with this instruction could result in investigation and possibly disciplinary action.

We already give access to youtube to all of our staff for T & L access. If smoothwall could integrate something like this where it redirects to the safe search that would be useful as I am a little wary of some of the comments posted on some pages.
