Exchange or Zimbra - What do you use?
Sylv3r replied to jack0w's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We use Zimbra for our students and a product called FirstClass from OpenText for our staff. Both highly recommended. -
We do the same as this ^^ Core Education CORE Education and Consulting (UK) Ltd - Core Education offer a VLE based on Sharepoint, but a lot of people were quite negative of the product but I hear it has improved according to recent posts on here.

I got a confirmation e-mail last night, but it said my e-mail wasn't registered when I tried to join this afternoon. Did I miss much?

CC3 and Vanilla (non RM) Terminal Servers???
Sylv3r replied to Butuz's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I must admit this is something I have wanted to do but never got round to doing it. Have a look at the following: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/how-do-you-do/21585-ts-cc3-domain.html -
After a recent news item from our LA - we have since removed our twitter and facebook pages. I agree Facebook and Twitter were two great forms of communication with students and parents - but we have now been left with little choice. Use of Social Networking Sites As you might be aware, the County Council does not currently have a policy on the use of Social Networking Sites although we understand that this is currently under consideration. However, pending the introduction of a County Council policy, everybody should be very clear that Children and Young People's Services does not support the use of social networking sites as a suitable means of contact with children and *young people due to the necessity to adhere to certain professional standards for some groups of staff and, importantly, some very significant safeguarding concerns.* This is in line with guidance and recent comments from CEOP, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre - more guidance and information can be found on the [ Thinkuknow for Parents: FAQs - Social Networking ] CEOP site. Managers are requested to ensure that the use of *sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc., for* the *distribution of information or for personal contact with children and young people is not permitted and any failure to comply with this instruction could result in investigation and possibly disciplinary action.

We've had PC's from them in small numbers with no issues. Cheap and decent specs with 5 year warranties. I know other schools and other members on here who have purchased the PC's and IWB's in larger numbers and are delighted with the service they receive. Its not the same company as the Toner sharks.

Supposedly I have one coming next week, I think I heard that last week and this week actually.....

Would you like to help and show us your tech?
Sylv3r replied to Ric_'s topic in General EduGeek News/Announcements
You forgot to mention you took over the Smoothwall stand at one stage! -
We have a wasp scanner which we put the serials into our custom built asset system - not ideal but I can certainly recommend the wasp kit.

Good call - the HP ML115 Servers are going for about £140 now, although you mentioned you didn't have much of a budget it will cause a lot less stress then trying to install onto your CC3 servers.

Safer Internet Day 2010 - 9th Feb - What's your school doing?
Sylv3r replied to elsiegee40's topic in General Chat
Has anybody knocked up or found some nice new desktop wallpaper for Safer Internet Day 2010? Not the ThinkUKnow stuff as I already have that. Thanks -
We use this here too. Pretty good and efficient and as you say looks pretty on the wall.

We use profiles and go through the following process. Staff complete reports using Profiles webpart via SLG - we do not provide SIMS access to general teachers only HOY and LMT have SIMS access via the client all other staff use SLG. Reports are generated when complete and e-mailed to form tutors who look through all reports and e-mail staff with the necessary changes Teachers make the above changes, then after a set deadline - we put the reports into review mode HOY then reads through all reports and makes any additonal changes via the Review mode in SIMS - after the final deadline reports are put together - manually converted to word documents then sent through the photocopier. A long winded process but its what we are used to and we know it works - we have been waiting for a while for the review mode to be made available via SLG but it has been put back a few times from when it was originally mentioned as part of the SLG roadmap.

Suppliers with good websites, stock levels and eta
Sylv3r replied to siuko's topic in Recommended Suppliers
I used to use Insight and like you I preferred to see what products were available, but now I find it much easier for me to come up with a 'wishlist' and let the suppliers locate me the products - it helps with shopping around getting like for like quotes also. -
Thats the last number I used a while ago too. We use the [email protected] address and its usually responded too relatively quickly. If I remember correctly before the councils joined together the filtering was governed by someone at ITSS and not Durham .net but I could be wrong, this was from an e-mail I sent October 2006 anyway.

The exam officer mentioned these a while ago - I did find them at around £30 for 17" but can't' remember where from now - we still didn't purchase them as it was still silly money for what they are. Give it a year or two and the exam boards will have these down as a requirement to sit online tests.
