  1. Import Update in SOLUS3 only lets you import SOLUS packages, not the SQL scripts that dbupgrade maintains. It's a right pain that one.
  2. They won't really notice the change, yet you'll have most of the benefits of redirected documents plus lots of additional ones. Would certainly be the way I'd go if setting up afresh.
  3. Eeek, local documents? How will they be backed up? Encryption is straightforward enough, but what if the laptop breaks? If you're going that way, I'd suggest that you use OneDrive for their home areas. If you want to avoid that, stick to redirected documents on the server.
  4. It seems that this will really hit some recent, decent spec kit in some schools which is the real kicker. For me yes, my 2009 Lenovo M58s won’t support it. Oh well, they’re slightly older than some of the students. There are a few hundred machines this age on our estate. However, I’ve mostly stuck to enterprise kit which helps, but we’re going to have an expensive few years now as we cycle out the oldest stuff in preparation. About time I suppose, but there we go.
  5. I don’t monitor the version o Office 2019. I know that if I go to a machine and manually check it, it’ll either be ip to date or will then update - lots of testing got me there. I had to change some GP settings that I’d locked down in older versions - like ones which restrict Office connecting to online servers.
  6. If it helps, we use the CDN through a Smoothwall and that’s the proxy. Never bothered with the local update location - seemed a faff and didn’t follow MS’ advice. Takes some looking after.
  7. No worries at all for us then, we have a good…20% or so of our machines that meet that spec. So we either run 10 past its EoL or have to get brutal with the skip filing. To be fair, some of our PCs will be 16 years old by that point…
  8. John McAfee: Anti-virus creator found dead in prison cell https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-57589822 Not an entirely unpredictable set of circumstances here it seems - he was certainly divisive too! Sad end at that age though.
  9. I run the script on startup, and also manually set the wallpaper to the bginfo file via GPO. That seems to kick it in the backside so it works on first logon.
  10. Just found my old post about when I did 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 on my SIMS server (only a couple of years ago - why did I go to 2012 R2?!) Only thing that caught me out was .NET installing an older version on upgrade - that version then didn’t support SIMS latest. Updating .NET fixed it.
  11. Is that all that shows? You may have to enable other boot devices but I’m not familiar with the UEFI on these. I’d hope that it doesn’t need to be in legacy mode but might be a way to check.
  12. Has the internal disk been removed from the boot order?
  13. They do seem to go like this when the disks get old and knackered.
  14. https://www.eeti.com/drivers_Win.html Are these the ones you found?
  15. Does the driver come with a Control Panel applet for it? May even be an extension of the mouse and touchpad settings.
  16. Is the Media Creation Tool 100% definitely giving you 2004?
  17. Have you tried Googling for the Hardware ID of the touchscreen? It's an old resistive touch type on PS2 it seems - but 64 bit Windows 7 drivers should be available as they shipped with that. https://posguys.com/pos-computer_42/Partner-Tech-SP-800_1247/ Downloads tab.
  18. We’re a long way from the days of the Nokia 7280! I do love my old iPhone SE (G1) which is still a great phone. Too damn small for my spidery hands though!
  19. Azure AD Connect will be the missing link for you, connecting onsite accounts to those on M365. You set it up, making sure your domain suffixes are correct for your AD users (to match your registered domain), sort the DNS checks that it needs (some records will be needed on your external DNS) and off you go. You can set it to only create accounts in certain OUs, you can set SSO, etc. This is all included with a UK schools entitlement, so it's free. That comes with an Azure backend included - that's how it's all powered. You don't need to spin up an actual Azure server as such.
  20. Do you have an onsite Active Directory already? Or are you looking to set up a domain completely offsite?
  21. The roles do want separating - WSUS is a space monster if unchecked. It'll run on a desktop - it's not exactly a service that needs massive redundancy or reliability. I would personally still use multiple disks - if not in RAID, then with OS and data separation (OS on SSD) as it'll be faster and wear less. WSUS is borderline unusable without https://www.ajtek.ca/cart/ - though I think this has been rather cynically commercialised now.
  22. I like the ION Block Rockers. https://www.amazon.co.uk/ION-Audio-Block-Rocker-Plus/dp/B07NF99G6H Compact, loud, good battery life. Cheap too. May be worth going for the Sport model for water resistance.
  23. You can, with a little more work, obtain all of the drivers from a built machine (that has grabbed them from Windows Update or via packs etc), dump them all out with Powershell, then import them straight into MDT from the dump location. I've done this for machines that struggle to navigate the proxy at build time (about 30% of them here). There are some quirks with very old drivers, such as for AMD 4*** (R700) cards, and I've just had to scrap our Nvidia 7*** cards (NV47) as the drivers won't work in 20H2. Export-WindowsDriver -Online -Destination C:\DRIVERS\
  24. We used FOG until 2019 - I switched to MDT with thin images as my FOG server died. No regrets, it's much quicker and easier and no sysprep faff!

    PC Fire!

Molex to SATA converters are notorious and I would recommend removing them from any PCs in any schools.
