  1. I’m not an expert, and it’s a few years since I last looked at it. The source of the file depends on your profile type, but for local it comes from your hidden ‘Default’ user profile. This is modified by sysprep, or by loading the hive into regedit and playing with it. I can’t remember if GPO settings write to it. Possibly - you can make the registry changes from a GPO direct to the profile in many cases - but the GPO will override the profile settings as I believe the profile is loaded first.
  2. No mate - while it's an awesome offer (which is what the thanks were for) that'd mean 8 hours of driving in a van to get them.

    Gaming Chat

Uncharted 4 🥰 I still haven’t played The Lost Legacy, really should as I love these games.
  4. Yes I should have clarified - it doesn’t work through our AoVPN setup and I haven’t dug into why too much as it’s a complex old beast. I suspect as you’ve said - DNS issues as they won’t be registering. Hasn’t bothered me too much, but in an balanced home/school hybrid setup it’d be more important.
  5. Yeah, SOLUS3 won’t work through the VPN for updates. Nor will AB Tutor, no surprise there! I just make sure that updates aren’t applied while staff are on holiday (or lockdown!) and I can deal with the few that aren’t on site at the time.
  6. Always On VPN for us, on all staff laptops. Or you could move to hosted SIMS (not a recommendation, but an alternative at least), or cloud MIS. Bit of work to set up AOVPN, but it’s been good. As you’re already using O365 integration you may find some of its capabilities aren’t needed though, like file server access.
  7. It also means that putting 2022 on production hardware isn't too brave - it's like going from 10 1809 to 21H1.
  8. I should add that our staff do follow a name scheme for their usernames. When they change name through marriage or divorce (or gender, not had that yet) it's a bit of a game changing them across as I have to change it in AD, add it as the new email alias (so the old address stays as a proxy), change home folder name, change SIMS username and details in SIMS, then crawl our internal DB to re-match old and new (though HeidiSQL makes this easy enough). I'd hate to have to do anything like this for the students too!
  9. Yeah, you can be pretty confident that a random backup from 2020 is absolutely no use at all now!
  10. Urghh nasty modern tape players. Techmoan has covered why those things are so bad! Far better off with a vintage unit, for the full tape-chewing nostalgia-fest!
  11. We use a completely unrelated year group identifying word, followed by a sequential number for each user. It’s designed to be anonymous, yet easy to remember for the students. No PI at all held in their usernames/email addresses that way. The usernames are in SIMS as a UDF for staff to look up.
  12. You should be able to schedule a commandreporter.exe report, which outputs the data to an xml file with another scheduled task to automate a webpage to pull the data into a DB (or simpler, display formatted results from a CSV). That webpage could then show on your screens.
  13. We still user super mandatory on Windows 10. Works okay. Not supported, bit bodgy perhaps. I wouldn't recommend anyone set them up fresh now, but can be kept working fine. The OneDrive client is a big problem with them - if the user logs off before the file has synced, it'll be deleted along with the profile.
  14. Has the user got any odd attributes in AD that are syncing across? There’s so e that can affect mailbox creation - typically where they clash with old onsite Exchange settings.
  15. You may be able to reset them with iTunes on Mac or PC, clearing them completely. I’ve managed this before. Then an MDM should allow you to stop this from happening again.
  16. I’d be pretty confident that it’s your cabling - going from a modern machine through a run of adapters and legacy cabling can be a bit hit and miss. We do the same with gen 1s, but we use USB-C docks to connect so the signal is very strong from source. We’ve found that some DisplayPort to HDMI and HDMI to VGA cables haven’t played along with them though.
  17. It shouldn't recreate the students, if it gives them the same login as you have set already. Worth testing on a subset.
  18. Move them manually? Hell naw. That's not only an admin nightmare, but a complete waste of many hours of your time. Either the teachers can do it, or you need to get it to sync from your MIS.
  19. I'd be pretty confident in saying no. The host has more than an RDP session to the VM - it can get into the BIOS and see boot progress, after all. It's as close to a barebones view of the guest as possible.
  20. The [Count] fields (with the blue icon next to them) are at the bottom of the lists when you select Student as the report type, and should show under each sub-category.
  21. I've been told that some classes synced for use with one program haven't updated - as there's so little I can check with both the sync client or the Wonde website I tend to just bat any issues back to the HoD and tell them to take it up with their contact at the software company who use Wonde (not that helpful admittedly, but I don't order or manage these apps).
  22. Have you seen http://www.edugeek.net/forums/home-access-plus/201644-hap-only-mapping-drives-all-permissions.html It may be a bug.
  23. It depends what you need from HAP+. If it’s remote access, you may be able to set up an RD Web gateway with an Azure app proxy to give you better security. If it’s the file access that you really need, you can give it a try but you really need to be going through the code to see how you can strengthen any security (or bug check). Azure for logons? Cost can’t be the main motivator with this one - you’ll be thrown under a bus if you get compromised through an unsupported publicly hosted piece of software (the software is good, but without support it’s down to you). We use a similar solution, but: 1) I constantly bug check, strengthen and test it 2) I’m ready to fall on my sword if it’s compromised
  24. Talking of holes, you may find that HAP+ is full of them as it hasn't been actively developed for a long time. I may be fine. However, with it sitting out on the internet, can you take that chance?
  25. I’ve not noticed any performance change with 7.200, and it doesn’t take long to open here. Quirk with something like the default printer? Dodgy connect.ini settings?
