We see this if the printer isn't turned on in a room. It tries to make a connection and hangs, taking forever to logon. Seems to be a weakness of GPP Printer deployment. Alternatives are a script instead, cutting the fingers off anyone who turns the printers off, updating printer firmware in case they're prone to crashing (HP P2055dn!) and burning all printers and painting yourself purple in some sort of ritual. Any of them.

SmoothWall Server Certificate error issue
3s-gtech replied to MrEprise's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Indeed, that was another line from Pearson - "well we haven't had any issues from any other schools!" Right, well either their filtering doesn't catch cert errors or they haven't bothered to read your poxy mailshots. Fix your stuff, dumb*****. -
SmoothWall Server Certificate error issue
3s-gtech replied to MrEprise's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Currently about to have the same battle with Pearson (their mail shots to exams officers have this issue). Their reply? "You have filtering. It needs to be taken off." Pearson need to be taken off. The planet. -
[24h2 / lts 2024] Windows 11, version 24H2: What’s new for IT pros
3s-gtech replied to 6Foot2's topic in Windows 11
I’ll replace the wims on our MDT servers ASAP I think - we haven’t pushed 11 widely yet so I don’t want to push out older versions much. -
Don't get sucked into guest user methodology. Set them up with a SIMS login, document the request from the head. Nail the permissions down. You may need to give them a login, but they don't need access to your shares. Make them aware of your policies. You don't need home address. SIMS does have permissions for non-employees.

That was my thoughts - it’s acting like a switch or AP and STP is killing it, though that tends to happen quicker than this.

Incredible lady. What a career and a legacy.

Ah, good to see consistency in the quality of provision.

I need a system to reset Supply account every night
3s-gtech replied to maxrebo's topic in How do you do....it?
Do you use Salamander? Otherwise, you can do it in Powershell, with a scheduled task. Creates a random 12 character string for the password then sets it. $password = -join (((48..57)+(65..90)+(97..122)) * 80 |Get-Random -Count 12 |%{[char]$_}) Set-ADAccountPassword -Identity [username] -Reset -NewPassword (ConvertTo-SecureString -AsPlainText $password -Force) set-aduser [username] -ChangePasswordAtLogon:$true My Powershell is poor, but this should work. Test it. https://gist.github.com/gregjhogan/2350eb60d02aa759c9d269c3fc6265b1 -
There is not enough free memory to run this program.

Is the shortcut definitely pointing at the exe directly, and not at a shortcut that could create a loop? -
Yup, year 9 and above. Phone ownership is very broad by that point. Opt-out rather than opt-in.

We got rid. The locally hosted solution was a hot mess - not sure if that was the because of the configuration that was used (not by us) or it was just a janky product, but I happily moved to Defender a few years back.

Do you only have the immersion heater for hot water, no feed from the boiler to the jacket around the tank? It all looks antique and basic enough that you'd benefit from a complete refresh, along with getting some some insulation in your roof across the joists. IMO, don't have cavity wall insulation fitted - houses of this age can often end up very badly damaged by the resulting damp issues. Air gaps in cavities work very well for insulation.

BIOS should be under drivers - I turned those off (mainly because Synaptics like to deploy drivers that include the hardware ID for ancient kit that then blue screens when you touch the trackpad).

I was a hold-on to WSUS for years, but it was becoming such an unreliable dog. I don’t miss it - changing over to WUfB took less time than it would have taken to even start diagnosing the latest reason why clients weren’t getting updates.

Android on BYOD - Smoothwall
3s-gtech replied to E_G_R2's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Here's my instruction list: Go to the website on your device, using mobile data or home wifi Choose sign in with your logon details Click on the link, and download the file Go to 'Settings' on your phone Choose 'Connections', then 'Wi-Fi', then the three dots and 'Advanced' Click on 'Install network certificates' Select the menu icon in the top right then 'Internal Storage' Choose the certificate file from the folder you saved it to (Downloads usually). Click Done and call it SchoolCA Connect to the network 'YourSSID' When asked for username ('Identity') enter username@domain When asked for a password enter your password (the same one you use for the computers) Click on CA certificate and chose SchoolCA Type 'school.ca.domain' in the Domain box Click Connect It may be slow to connect - be patient! -
Android on BYOD - Smoothwall
3s-gtech replied to E_G_R2's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We host the Smoothwall inspection cert on a public page (which they have to sign in to and use on their data/at home to do so). This installs the self-signed cert for the Smoothwall, which still works on newer Android versions. It doesn’t need to be a public/proper cert. The device will check that the user wants to trust it. The user can then connect to the SSID and select the cert from their device in the connection settings. It’s quite complex, but does work. -
[ipad] Green screen app recommendations

We've used Green Screen by Do Ink for several years. Is it the best? Not sure, but it's simple and cheap. -

Yes, it'll be the Power Off timer in Android. Android controls all of the device settings - it's not a TV as such. That timer is not the same as a power saving timeout. -
We use it because our MIS is SIMS which has all of the modern features and integrations of a mangle with drying rack. With a proper cloud MIS already, it seems like a fantastic way to waste money...

Using a projector which is usually a source of noise and heat, in a stuffy hall, is a bad plan. Too much to go wrong, issues with user error that are hard to fix in a quiet but stressful environment, disruption when you have to go there. Whiteboard and a lovely big digital clock is more than enough.
-
I tend to do a ‘install on one, copy the folder, deploy that folder’ approach. It’s a bit crap, but then so is the software.
-
Yes, I saw that too. Not to worry - updating the software is as straightforward as explaining quantum string theory to a toddler. While on fire.

Smothwall - Appliance or VM?
3s-gtech replied to steveg's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We’re one of those - our old bare metal host started to die (known iDRAC issue) and Smoothwall were very helpful in getting my own host set up using the same config. Worked great since (touch wood).
