These are today's weather warnings on the BBC: UK Warnings Weather Warning Friday 11th January YELLOW EARLY WARNING of SNOW Rain will turn increasingly to snow during the course of Saturday across more eastern parts of Wales and the southwest Midlands, firstly over high ground, and later to low levels. There is the potential for 5-10cm of snow to accumulate on ground above 200m, with localised accumulations of 2-5cm eventually at lower levels. The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel. Valid on Saturday from 1200 until 2355. Friday 11th January YELLOW EARLY WARNING of ICE Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow will gradually clear southwards on Saturday afternoon and evening. Temperatures will then fall rapidly, leading to a risk of icy surfaces across much of Wales, the Midlands and southern England. The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel. Valid from 1800 Saturday until 1000 Sunday. Friday 11th January YELLOW EARLY WARNING of SNOW It will turning colder through this weekend, with snow showers likely to affect eastern coastal counties of Scotland and England. Amounts of snow are uncertain and are likely to be highly variable with some places seeing very little. However, 5-10cm could accumulate locally, particularly over hills above 200m, with icy surfaces an additional hazard. The public should be aware of the potential for localised disruption to travel. At the moment the Met Office are warning of sleet and snow in certain areas of the country. their highest concern currently is for icy roads rather than snow in those areas. Sirbendy Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Here we've just had "Briefing cancelled at 3pm due to adverse weather". Right. Yes. I can see that. It's FOGGY. If we get anything, it's not supposed to happen until late here in the Midlands. I don't like driving in the snow, not at all...but that's a bit knee-jerk IMO. I have my winter tyres on, my autosocks in the boot in case I need to back them up, and I'll be bunging in half a tank later..but I'll play it by ear. Also got dept manager running around grabbing contact details off us. Panic much? If I get stuck or it's too dicy, I'll turn round and let him know. Downsides of living in a valley with hills to get in/out. However, I'll be surprised if we get huge amounts. If we do, I can't walk in (knackered legs), so I'll just have to work remotely. Don't like the idea of driving DD to nursery in snow, mind...I'd rather her safe at home. I don't mind the car/me taking a hit, but I'd rather not risk the kiddies.

DT2 Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Wow, it's actually warmer (ish) here right now. We're having a warm spell currently, reached a high of 0C yesterday. Supposed to fall off sharply after weekend though, back to -20s. It's actually more bearable than I thought, it's not as humid as the UK so the cold doesn't feel too bad on its own. It's that wind, you never felt anything like it; wind chill of -35C. I walked from my car to the office (about 20 meters) without gloves last week and my fingers were in so much pain. Snow is a bit less than what I'd hoped for, probably about a foot average on the ground. Some places it drifts to around 3-4 feet. Still, could bloody murder fish and chips!!! @tom_newton

Some significant accumulations of around 5 cm of snow are likely over low ground with perhaps 10 cm or more over higher ground. Icy surfaces will be an additional hazard, particularly during Monday morning. The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel.
witch Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 @DT2 - a friend of mine was at Uni in Canada and she remembers standing at a bus stop in -15 degrees and trying not to cry as the tears froze on her face if she did. She comes from Trinidad so goodness knows how she coped.

You know what kids are like when they get playing in snow - he'd built a snow fort and was enjoying himself. We literally had to drag him in the house.

Just can't wait for all the kids throughing hand fulls of slush at each other when I am on duty. Same here though roads didn't seem treated although it wasn't that bad but another hour or so could of been so bit of a gamble.

HaleStorm Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 It was the worst showing of snow in North Sheffield ever....normally we get cut off from the rest of the city if it snows, being 12miles out and closer to Barnsley...but it was rubbish, not even half a CM and it wont even stick together to make snowballs to throw at the kids
