Snow yesterday, but to my amazement as I was yard-brushing the snow off the car and looking at the road with a "well, this will be fun" thought, a tractor shot past my drive with a plough on it. 6.50am. I live on an estate too...unexpected. All roads in and out, and round about literally were clear. The snow tyres were barely getting their treads wet. 90% gone by last night. Followed by a hard freeze. So I couldn't open the car doors this AM. Door handles were creaking alarmingly, so I got in through the boot and braced myself against the P/S door to open the Drivers door with my boot. Then started it, locked it with the spare and left it to warm up and defrost while I had a cuppa, and a cuddle with the boy, and got the girlchild ready for nursery. Then in we jump, and gently off to work. Ice? Not even noticed..LOVE my tyres.

You get at least some most winters and I would have thought the LA etc would be prepared. Down here, quite another matter -one flake and everyone runs around hysterically shouting "doomed, doomed!" Simple really, the LAs are useless. Not sure if the gritters had been out but the roads were completely clear this morning, no problems at all. As forecast it snowed all day but only hovered around 0'C so the roads remained pretty clear but with plenty of water/slush hanging about. Again as forecast it quickly dipped below freezing at 3pm. By the time I left work just before 5pm it was treacherous, car door was froze shut, couldn't stand up in the car park, etc. Were the gitters out before 3pm? Were they nowt. Were they out before/during rush hour when the grit would have the best chance of working? I didn't see them or any grit on the roads. The council adjacent to us sent all their workers home at 3.30pm as the roads were that bad. A few tonnes of grit (which needs using) vs the entire council getting an early finish, which do you think cost them the most money? Idiots. It's supposed to be -6'C tonight so we'll see what the roads are like in the morning... Edited January 15, 2013 by Guest

Heavy frost on the car - irritatingly as I normally park it up the drive under the vent for the central heating which keeps the windscreen frost-free, but of course I didn't last night. Got to work early only to find the caretaker is ill so no-one turned up to unlock the gates for 15 minutes. Lovely!

Looking like it's going to be snow all weekend for us, so fingers crossed for Monday 1

For a Brass Band contest at Butlin's...i hope its not as bad as the weather people make it sound. Our band are in with a chance of winning a prize this year and the prize money is good, £1000 for 3rd place alone!

Fleetwood Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Had a bit of light snow here but it stopped very quickly; apparently I'm "Scrooge" because I wasn't getting all excited about it and that was from staff, bloody mean. We've had a warning from the Met Office for heavy snow tomorrow early morning. Hopefully it'll be before the school opens

We've already fired up digital messaging, Impero notifications and SMS to inform people we're opening at 10 and closing at 2 regardless, and monitor the website and twitter for further updates. Wait and see time...if it hits badly, I reckon we may be closed. Maybe. At least the tiddlers get Friday, sat, sun and Mon off Nursery (they do a 3 day week), so I'm not having to worry about driving them or the missus about in it. Just me, the Astra, my trusty autobox and winter tyres.

witch Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Went to bed at 9pm yesterday due to dental surgery and I dont think there was any then. Now we have a thick covering (well, for Dorset) and it is coming down fast!!! Off to see if schools are closed (cross fingers)
