Just signed up for a 3 year contract with Smoothwall using one of their UTM-1000 devices. Previously used ISA / Forefront + Websense (ick). After trialing the box for about 3 days, it was clear to us that Smoothwall was the obvious choice. Its great!

Aftering years with Squid Proxy on Gentoo and then Ubuntu, decided that for what we wanted to do we needed to do a bit of an overhaul. Smoothwall provided exactly what we wanted and been very impressed with it since. We using the school guardian product.

We had Websense installed before i started here, but it ran out and the school were looking for a 'cheap' alternative.

I ended up installing Blue Coat's 'K9' content filtering on the student proxy server (has squid installed), so all the student PC's now get filtered with K9 :)

Free and works quite well.

Where are my armies of loyal Smoothie users? ;)

@bladedanny: YHGFL is squid + dg (so far :))

One here. Smoothwall SG. Just signed up for three year contract - it's that good.

Forefront TMG. Relatively easy to setup (once I realised that TMG needed to be in domain to get per user filtering) and at £150 perpetual vs the £800/yr I was quoted for Smoothwall, it was a no brainer especially since we use it for other things too. Just run it on it's own virtual machine so no hardware cost.

We did consider moving away from our LEA and getting a seperate line (in which case i would have got a smoothie) but the cost of the internet alone was more then the 11k we pay our lea not including any costs for the smoothie box, moodle hosting etc

Squid / DansGuardian on dedicated redundant pair, tho' with Smoothwall on a system as the outer F/W.

Honestly, Squid/DG was set up before I started testing Smoothwall. The Smoothwall has been working great, but Squid/DG have worked so well there's been no reason to change the configuration.

ISA 2006 - Will be upgrading to forefront TMG in the not too distant future

Worth noting for anyone not running behind such a device that using procurve manager you can scan and connect to other schools switches! at least you can in SWGfL anyway!

I saw your post about the proxy you use and I am currently using the same config. I.E. SQUID with K9 Web filter. Proxy works fine and users only gain access to sites allowed through K9, however they do not get the K9 splash screen if a page is blocked. They just get page cannot be displayed...

Is this something you have managed to get working ?
